Greetings!!

Here we are, at the end of a quite frankly ridiculous and a pundit shaming of a season! It is one which has been unprecedented in so many ways and we are unlikely to see one like this for many years. Half way through this season, nobody would’ve bet their hard earned money on City to run away with the championship. After the start that they had, nobody would have suggested Ole’s United would finish second (albeit a distant one but with a game to spare), & West Ham inspired by United ol’ boys, Moyes & Messi Lingard to within a whisker of qualifying for Europe.

The season has been dominated by a lot of themes but some stayed constant like VAR, refereeing howlers, muscle injuries and Spurs bottling it time and again. We are set up for an exciting last day of the season, with two Champions League and the Europa League spots up for grabs.

All in all, this was a brilliant experience for Bawa. You read some, you absolutely ignored some & in the end, we know that there are a few hundred lovely people out there (thanks to the wordpress data capture analytics) who turn up every week, only to see us get our predictions absolutely wrong. Thank you for supporting & bearing with us and in the interest of maintaining discipline; we refuse to go away quietly as we intend to go out all gun’s blazing. It’s one last opportunity for us to get all our predictions hilariously wrong.

On that note, let us have a look at what Bawa has to say (with full confidence) on the final set of matches.

Arsenal vs Brighton

AFTV can go into an absolute meltdown and they couldn’t be faulted for their manager publicly accepting that they have made a lot of mistakes this season and they need to learn. The criticism that Arteta got an easy job because he sat on Pep’s bench grows louder. On the other hand, Arteta has definitely made improvements and a little bit more patience could reap them rich rewards. Nothing much to say about their squad but them kids be alright!

In Dat Boy Welbz, Brighton will be missing a major attacking outlet. The former Arsenal man has been Potter’s respite in the weeks that have gone by. Lewis Dunk’s return from suspension should be a boost though. In what could be his last game for the Seagulls, Dunk’s presence in both the boxes could be crucial.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to take this by a few goals.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

Villa have completely tapered from where they were at the start of the season. Consequently, they also pose a much milder threat to Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions (if the Blues don’t end up taking it at Porto). Grealish’s return in the last match would have been a relief to Smith, and the Englishman would want to put in one last performance in the shop window before someone swoops in for him for what would be the GDP of Liberia & Sierra Leone combined.

Chelsea post Tuchel have been what their fans would have wanted all season. Timo VARner had yet another goal written off due to VAR. But Rudiger and Jorginho ensured that Chelsea seriously reduced the threat levels of Leicester to their place in next season’s UCL. As long as Tuchel puts Mendy between the sticks, they should be alright!

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to just edge this.

Fulham vs Newcastle

Fulham, who swiftly return to the Championship and have nothing to play for but pride will take on the Geordies at home. In a season of ‘what-if’, the Cottagers would seriously wonder how things could have turned out, if their attack had turned up in at least half of the games that they drew.

Newcastle have built up a brilliant momentum to please their potential Saudi suitors. Joe Willock would also want to top his form off with another brilliant showing before he returns to his place that is unfairly occupied by an expensive signing or two at the Emirates.

Bawa’s Verdict: Howay The Lads – Newcastle to sign off with a win.

Leeds vs West Brom

It’s their first Premier League home game in more than a decade in front of their fans. Bielsa’s boys would want to dance around the Baggies to give their fans something to cheer. Expect a few goals and a raucous crowd.

Big Sam will also leave his post at the Hawthorns after this game, making him the second PL fossil that will be without a job at the end of the season. It’s all about Pereira (if he starts as he is carrying a small injury) and how he can show other PL clubs what they would get by keeping him in the Prem. There is nothing much to write about the Baggies squad now.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to run riot

Leicester vs Spurs (Match of the Week)

The Foxes completed a brilliant Cup run but seem to have lost steam in the Prem. The absence of Evans seems to be hurting them defensively. Iheanacho meanwhile continues to score for fun, and by the looks of the Spurs defence, should continue to as well. Brodgers would know that his side will have to give it all, to displace his former club from the top 4 or else face elimination from the CL AGAIN on the last day.

Ryan Mason’s Spurs have looked very likely to concede at home, and they are worse away. Add to it that this could be MC Kane’s last ever game for the Spuds, this could be a comedy of Spurs proportions. Mou Mama rolled all 3 of his usual seasons into one and has left Spurs desperately clutching for a Europa League place.

Bawa’s Verdict: A nervy draw where both sides lose.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

What was written off to be a horrible season in defence of their title has achieved a decent shape come last day. Mo Salah has proved his enduring class & value once again by pulling along the side when they were found lacking. TAA has come into some serious form as well and will be posing serious questions to Southgate and his Euros selection. Liverpool have not had the best finishes to the season in the years gone by but they will be aware that a few million pounds and the small case of participating in the Champions League next season are in the balance here.

Palace will want to give their manager the perfect send-off. Benteke’s form will be on Klopp’s radar provided the Belgian recovers from what seems to be an ankle injury. Half the world will be hoping that Uncle Woy has the last laugh against his former employers, as he signs off from the footballing world.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to take this one.

Man City vs Everton

Brighton pipping Pep’s boys to the post would count for nothing. Pep would still rest his key players, with focus on the upcoming Champions League final, especially knowing that his opponents (Chelsea) have a lot at stake against Villa. We would also hope Aguero beats the roulette and gets a start. A true legend of the Premier League and Man City.

Everton have only themselves to blame for the position that they are in. They will go back to the drawing board with nothing to show for some exciting exploits in the early half of the season. Hameez’s fitness will continue to be a concern, and Don Carlo will be hoping that they can work on it during this off-season.

Bawa’s Verdict: City parade to go on.

Sheffield United vs Burnley

The Blades’ fans must be thanking their stars or Gods that this season is finally over. Onwards and hopefully upwards from the Championship.

Sean Dyche must be uneasy looking at his side now. In the absence of Pope, the defence is a wobbly mess and looks certain to concede. But Chris Wood and his motley crew of midfielders can’t seem to stop scoring! If you are looking for some upside in your FPL team, Wood could be your go-to man!

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to take home points.

West Ham vs Southampton

Moyes will be proud of the fight that his squad has shown. They have been unlucky with injuries. What could have been, if Antonio and Cresswell hadn’t spent time on the physio’s table is anyone’s guess! West Ham would still look to wrap up that Europa League spot, and maybe sign Lionel Jesse permanently in the summer!

Ralph has had a horrible season with luck, injuries and VAR. Their resurgence after being destroyed by Leicester last season was used as a marker by many, after Bruno and Co. demolished them. However, that was not to be, and the Saints would be glad that they were not in any relegation scrap in a season like this.

Bawa’s Verdict: Hammers to win and secure their Europa League spot.

Wolves vs Man Utd

It’s Uncle Nuno’s farewell game. It’s only a shame that Jimenez won’t be around to bang in a few against a United side that will see some rotation (hopefully!). With the departure of Nuno, the Wolves roster could also see other significant departures, this could be a farewell match for many in Wolves’ colours & of Portuguese nationality.

With a Europa League Final on Wednesday night & with second place wrapped up, Bawa requests that somebody/anybody please tell Ole’ that he can rest Bruno. With Daddy and Diallo upfront, United should have enough fire power to handle the Wolves and end the season in a manic flourish given that United will definitely concede as well.

Luis Suarez aka El Pistolero did the business for Atlético Madrid and helped them lift the #LaLigaSantander for the 11th time in their history. The champions beat Real Valladolid in a 2-1 comeback win thanks to a Suarez winner to clinch the title from their city rivals ending a 7 year dominance by Real and Barcelona.

Speaking of Madrid, their star striker, Karim ‘Ferrari’ Benzema has been rewarded for a fine season with his inclusion in the France team for the European Championships. His inclusion has led to a 2400% increase in shirt sales of the French national team. Ferrari Benzema 1 Go Karting Giroud 0!

When it comes to money, the Championship play-off final, what many consider to be the most valuable game in football will take place at Wembley on May 29th between Swansea and Brentford.

Robert Lewandowski is now the sole record holder for most goals in a Bundesliga season. Despite Augsburg’s best efforts, Lewa scored his 41st of the season with the last kick of the game to earn him this accolade. The same match will also be remembered as the last for legends like David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez and the manager Hansi Flick in a Bayern shirt.

While this pandemic hasn’t spared anyone, this time its victim were the Argentinian giants, River Plate. With only 11 fit players and a midfielder playing in goal, River Plate did the unthinkable and beat Santa Fe 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores. #vamos

Juventus won the Coppa Italia for a record 14th time making CR7 one of the most decorated footballers of all time who has won every possible club trophy in England, Spain and Italy.

This season has been relentless with matches coming thick and fast and some fans might be happy to see the end of it! With promotion, relegation and trophies for year already accounted for, the only thing left is qualification for Europe. Mathematically 3-4 teams are in the mix for the Champions League but realistically its between Leicester, Chelsea & Liverpool for the two spots up for grabs.

Leicester winning the FA Cup in front of fans was such a wonderful sight and Bawa hopes that this is the first step towards normalcy as the fans play the biggest part in making football the “beautiful game”.

Talking about football during unprecedented times, there have been some fantastic achievements in the last year, some of which make it to the Leagues of Yonder section of Bawa Says 😜, so do scroll to bottom of this post and take a look for yourselves. But before you do that, take a look at this week’s predictions, Bawa takes as much responsibility for these as some governments do for the mismanagement of the pandemic:

Man Utd. vs Fulham

After a hellish week, Ole and his squad can focus on the remaining games in the PL as a build up to their match against Villarreal in the Europa League Final. Ole will hope that Harry Maguire can recover in time as despite his faults, this United team is better with him in it. On the attacking front, the form of Bruno, Greenwood and Cavani makes them favourites for any game, especially this one.

It’s not easy being relegated with three games to go, but the Cottagers put up another toothless performance against the Saints. The full debut and goal for Carvalho will come as a boost for Scott Parker who will have to take one hard look at his players as he prepares for life in the Championship.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Easy United Win.

Southampton vs Leeds

Saints controlled the game against a demoralised Fulham and a first goal for Tella shows that their academy is still one of the best in the country. If he had a fully fit squad at his disposal, this Saints team definitely would have finished in the top half with the likes of Ings, JWP and Vestergaard forming a solid spine.

Leeds blew away Burnley in a clinical 20 minute spell in the second half with Rodrigo scoring a sublime double. If Bielsa can hold on to these players and add a little more quality in the summer, Leeds could be competing for a top 6 finish next season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Leeds win to push for a top half finish.

Brighton vs Man City

The Seagulls still haven’t won a game in the PL in which their talismanic captain, Lewis Dunk hasn’t played. Dunk was a big miss against West Ham and will miss the game against City also due to suspension. It’s good to see Dat Boy Welbz doing the business upfront and Potter will hope to have him fit and firing for next season if they want to push for a higher place in the table.

While the scoreline might suggest a thriller, City were pretty comfortable in their 4-3 win at St. James Park. Pep outdid himself and played Scott Carson in goal, a full 10 years after his previous start in the PL. Ferran Torres was the hero with a fantastic hattrick and fans can expect a similar team and result against Brighton.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to continue their victory parade.

Chelsea vs Leicester

In a repeat of the FA Cup Final, these two clubs go at each other in less than 72 hours. Tuchel was critical of VAR missing the handball in the build-up to Leicesters goal on Saturday but he is clutching at straws there. There is a possibility that Chelsea’s season could go from a successful one to a bad one if they lose out on the top 4 and the Champions League final.

With the wind in their sails after their narrow triumph in the FA Cup Final, Rodgers will egg on his players to beat Chelsea and guarantee their place in the top 4. Vardy & Co. will have to be at their ruthless best if they are to penetrate this stingy Chelsea defense again. Without Evans at the back, they lose a cool head but Fofana and Soyuncu should be able to handle another rearguard effort.

Bawa’s Verdict: A nervous draw.

Everton vs Wolves

17 year old Dan Jebbison poured cold water on the Toffee’s European hopes in a game where Sheffield United looked more hungry for points than Everton. This also marked their 9th defeat at Goodison Park this season, making it their worst home season in PL history. All this while having a full strength side playing the game, sometimes you just can’t get it right!

A Hojberg goal and assist condemned Wolves to another pointless defeat. This went exactly as Bawa predicted, as MC led an assault on the only notable part of the Wolves’ squad – their defence and managed to breach it twice. Uncle Nuno has some soul searching to do, as without Jimenez, this season has been a horror show up front for them.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Everton win at Goodison for the fans.

Newcastle vs Sheffield United

The Geordies flew out of the blocks and were leading 3-2 before City tightened the screws. Without Wilson their attack gave a good account of themselves and Bruce will be happy to see Joelinton get on the scoresheet. The loan signing of Willock has been a masterstroke in an otherwise poor season. Bruce will relish the chance to secure two wins in the last two games against already relegated opponents.

There has been nothing much to write home about the Blades for a while; they did put in a good performance against Everton, but it has come around 30 games too late. The only good thing for Blades fans is that some players are still fighting for the club which should serve them well in the Championship if they were to stay.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Newcastle Win.

Spurs vs Aston Villa

The Hojberg that Mourinho had in mind at the time of signing finally turned up. Spurs picked up a regulation win, as Europa League definitely seems certain. While it’s still mathematically possible, a Top 4 finish seems highly unlikely. If the rumour mills are right, and MC is actually fed up with Levy and the Board, we could see some scintillating football from England’s main man as he puts himself in the shopping window.

Villa’s implosion continued with a loss at Selhurst Park. Even a top half finish looks unlikely for the Villans now. The only good news for Villa is Grealish’s consecutive appearance off the bench. Europa chasing teams will hope that VIllans show up and give Spurs a tough game.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to take the win.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal

Palace probably played one of the best bursts of attacking football in their win against Villa, the kind of burst that could send Uncle Woy’s pulse dangerously racing! With no relegation threat to worry about, Palace threw caution to the wind and played like they had nothing to lose. Expect more of that at home as they square up against fellow top 10 contenders. With Palace announcing the departure of Uncle Woy at the end of the season, the Eagles would be hoping to give him a better send-off from the bench than the one Pep has got going for Aguero.

Arteta’s boys would be well rested with no games over the weekend. The blank game week would have however been something that Arsenal did not want – helping them carry on the Smith-Rowe led momentum to finish the season strong and give them a fighting chance at Europa league football.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to scrape to a victory.

Burnley vs Liverpool

Sean Dyche will be extremely disappointed in the manner in which his team’s defense was penetrated by Leeds. And some good blocks ensured that the loss wasn’t worse. Vydra missed a good opportunity at 1-0 but thats something they will need to improve upon next season.

Klopp played a blinder by announcing Jota’s injury just before kick-off and breaking a few hundred thousand FPL hearts. The Hawthorns turned out to be a difficult place for them to visit again, with Allison rising highest to score a stunning header in stoppage time to keep them in the race for top 4. Klopp would want his men to be more clinical as they take a rightful swing at the Champions League places.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win to keep the pressure on the teams in the top 4.

West Brom vs West Ham

Like their fellow Championship bound side from Sheffield, the Baggies turned in a brilliant performance against Liverpool. They were hard done by losing to a last minute header by the opposing goalkeeper. Hal Robson Kanu looked lively and seemed to take advantage of Liverpool’s attack minded full backs. Big Sam may be going down, but one can never count him out!

While Moyes will rally his troops, he knows that the Hammers have lost the chance for a top 4 finish. He will rue the chances missed by Fornals and Antonio but that’s the beauty of football. His team possesses enough quality to come through this test and guarantee their Europa League participation next season.

Robert Lewandowski, take a bow! The Polish striker has to be one of the most underrated players in the football world. We rarely hear about his greatness but year after year he produces the goods for his team with this season being no different. He equaled a 49 year old record held by Gerd Muller by scoring 40 goals this season in 6 games fewer and can do one better if he scores in the final game of the season against Augsburg.

While the Scottish league doesn’t set the football world alight, Rangers F.C. did the unthinkable and went the whole season unbeaten amassing 102 points under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard (his first league title 😱), a truly remarkable feat!

In some news from Turkey, it was goal difference that decided the Turkish Süper Lig with Besiktas pipping Galatasaray to the title. Talk about fine margins 😱

Luis Suarez was considered surplus to Barcelona’s requirements at the beginning of the season, so it is befitting to see him score the goal that ended Barca’s hopes of winning the La Liga. Atletico scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes making them favourites to secure the La Liga on the final day over their city rivals.

Shall They Just Play Daily?!

We have entered the business end of the Premier league and it’s been a wild season. No pre-season, COVID-19 scares, injuries, managerial changes, ESL but three things that remained consistent are racist fans on social media, poor officiating despite the use of VAR & people scheduling football matches who have never played a game of foosball in their life..

Another all English Champions League final was confirmed with classy performances by City and Chelsea. The Europa League finals could have also been an English affair if the real Arsenal showed up at their own turf. It wasn’t to be and the Europa specialist, Unai Emery and his Yellow Submarine will battle Ole’s Red Devils at Gdansk to lift this trophy. So let us move our focus back to the PL with predictions 🔮 for this game week:

Leicester vs Newcastle

Leicester were held to a 1-1 draw by a 10 man Saints side. When Vestergaard was shown his marching orders, BR and his team must’ve thought that another easy win incoming but that wasn’t the case. Vardy needs to get back to this ruthless best to help Foxes stay in the top 4 as Chelsea and West Ham are hot on their heels.

Newcastle, much to the surprise to most; didn’t really trouble Arsenal. They sat back, tried to soak up the pressure and allowed the Gunners to mount sustained attacks & finally succumbed to a 2-0 loss. Bruce will be hoping that his players give this game a go as mathematically they are still not safe.

Bawa’s Verdict: A straightforward Foxes win.

Leeds vs Spurs

Leeds oh Leeds! The moment one feels that this team is gaining consistency they play poorly and lose. Bamford and Rodrigo need to stamp their authority on such games but the game passed them by. Kalvin Philips was a big miss but it wasn’t the usual full throttle Leeds performance, maybe the team is finally running out of steam. Or Raphinha might just pop back into the starting XI and things might return to normal.

Ryan Mason must be thinking what’s the fuss about managing in the PL. The baby faced Spurs interim manager has 2 wins out of 2 after beating Saints and hammering the Blades. While a poor team was in front of them, Bale and Son ran havoc and were rewarded with goals and fantasy points in an otherwise miserable week.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace

This snooze fest doesn’t warrant any attention from Bawa. Good luck to anyone who wants to watch what might be the most boring game in the PL this season.

Man City vs Chelsea (Match of the Day)

Clinical performances against Palace and then PSG puts City closer to another PL trophy and a first ever UCL final. Football experts are waxing lyrical about this team’s performance and one has to give credit where it’s due, money definitely buys trophies. Pep roulette will be back in action and this is a curtain raiser to the UCL final to be played in Istanbul in a few weeks.

Chelsea outclassed Madrid and Thomas Tuchel will be the first manager to take two different teams to a UCL final in consecutive years. We speak of City’s squad depth but forget that Chelsea isn’t too far off. They have a World Cup winner in Giroud warming the benches and beds of many fine ladies in London and players like Alonso/Emerson/Abraham/Hudson Odoi with another 45 loaned out across the globe.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw in the battle of whose squad depth is better.

Liverpool vs Southampton

While the last minute postponement of the game wasn’t ideal for Liverpool, they won’t mind playing the Saints this weekend. Anfield isn’t the fortress it used to be anymore and Klopp will be hoping that his forward line can re-discover some of the form that had helped them win the PL last season.

Ralph must’ve thought “Here we go again” when Vestergaard was shown a really harsh red card against Leicester but thankfully this side played well to rescue a draw and maybe his job. The red card has since been rescinded and Saints will hope that they can do the double over the reigning champions to add a little sheen to their season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win to raise hopes of a top 4 finish.

Wolves vs Brighton

Wolves did their Wolves thing and drew with West Brom guaranteeing their stay in the PL and mostly relegating their opponents. Apart from Fabio Silva scoring, there isn’t much to write about this Wolves team that has flattered to deceive its fans this season.

The Seagulls are one win away from securing another year in the PL and Potter will hope Dat Guy Welbz can produce another M.O.M. performance to ease the nerves at the Amex. Defensively they have been strong all season so its up to the lads upfront to do the business.

Bawa’s Verdict: Brighton win to extend their stay in the PL.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd.

Goals from Watkins and El Ghazi give Villa a chance to end the season in the top 10 and that would be a great achievement considering they were relegation favourites before the season started. Dean Smith, the board and the owners must be given credit for making astute signings to compliment the existing players and retaining Grealish who has been their kingpin this season.

Match#2 in 3 days against a motivated Villa team is just plain cruel. Without causing another uproar/ fan backlash, the FA have penalized United in the worst way possible for their fans staging a protest at Old Trafford before kickoff. It will definitely take a gargantuan effort for Ole and his squad to get through the next week.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

West Ham vs Everton

Michail Antonio, you beauty! The Hammers must be wondering where they would’ve ended up had Antonio not missed a few crucial games this season. Moyes needs his side to win as Chelsea could potentially drop points this weekend.

Everton doing Everton things! Don Carlo must be extremely annoyed at his side losing their way come the business end of the season. It looks like another season without European football for the Toffees.

Bawa’s Verdict: Antonio to the rescue.

Arsenal vs West Brom

The same old story for Arsenal at home with another match at the Emirates where they failed to score. The ramifications for the loss to Villarreal are unknown still but one can’t help but think that the fans, players and board are questioning “the process” Mikel is trying to build. There is no shame in losing a football match but the lack of effort, game plan and commitment is unacceptable.

Big Sam and his lads must take this opportunity of a downbeat Arsenal to try to boost their slim chances or survival. AMN will not be available as he can’t play against his parent club but Big Sam will hope to inflict more pain on Arteta and his team.

Bawa’s Verdict: A scratchy Arsenal win.

Fulham vs Burnley

This is the last class that Fulham will get in their battle for survival. Parker should ask his team to try to impose themselves and play with freedom. Good teams make their own luck and the Cottagers need to do the same and set the cat among the pigeons at the bottom.

Sean Dyche will remind his team that are not out of trouble yet. After their 4-0 win against Wolves, a loss to West Ham means there is a small chance they could get dragged into the relegation fight especially if Fulham can win this game. Chris Wood is the man in form and Dyche will hope that his striker puts away the chances that he might get.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Fulham win to make things interesting at the bottom.

Man Utd. vs Leicester (Match of the Day)

A better rested Vardy & Co. might have enough fuel in the tank to win this game to continue their quest for Champions League football. BR has done a miraculous job with the Foxes and securing a UCL spot it would be another feather in his hat.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace

Ralph and his team get another chance to propel themselves further up the table after a dismal few months. While they have struggled with injuries to key players like Ings, Vestergaard and Romeu, Saints will do well to hold on to these players next season.

Zaha & Co. will want to end the season on a high for Roy Hodgson’s faith in them. Palace might have secured their place in the PL but will have to do a lot more to remain competitive next season as half of their squad are at the end of their contracts.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Saints win.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

After two tough games against Madrid and City, Chelsea will play against a tetchy Arsenal team. Tuchel has the players at his disposal to cause damage but it will be interesting to see what combination he will go with to ensure a top 4 finish to guarantee UCL qualification.

Arteta couldn’t ask for a tougher fixture to save his teams season and his job. He might have to rely on the youngsters again as the senior statesmen in his squad don’t seem bothered. Considering their away record, Mikel will hope that his team can score a goal or two at least.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine Chelsea win.

Aston Villa vs Everton

There is a small chance that Grealish might take a small part in this game. He has been a big miss for the Villans and Dean Smith will hope that their talisman can help them move up the table for an unlikely top 7-8 finish to qualify for Europe.

Don Carlo will need his players to step up and try to win their game in hand if they are to habor any hopes of plying their trade in Europa. Pickford has picked up form at the right moment and will be wary of Watkins and El Ghazi.

Bawa’s Verdict: Aston Villa to do the double.

Man Utd. vs Liverpool (Match of the Day)

Match #4 in 8 days and it being against your fiercest rival, isn’t what Ole would have hoped for. One can only wait and see the player rotation as it is unimaginable to see a player play all the games.

Klopp and his men might be happy that they play a jaded United side as it gives them a chance to not only beat their rivals but also give them a chance to finish in the top 4.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win thanks to the PL scheduling team.

The war of words between two fine strikers continued before their UCL semi final and it was the Chelsea marksman who had the last laugh despite not even making an appearance over the two legs.

Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, Jens Lehman was sacked from his role at Hertha Berlin for sending a Whatsapp message to Sky pundit, Dennis Aogo calling him a “token black guy”. While he has apologised and stated that he miscommunicated and his intention wasn’t to be racist, ‘Mad Jens’ embodies his nickname but fans don’t condone this behavior.

Another week of football with a lot to write about regarding the ramifications of the short lived ESL experiment. Mou Mama and Ed Woodward are gone, fans of involved clubs protesting at every opportunity they get with even a potential takeover attempt at Arsenal (Daniel Ek, Spotify founder along with Henry, Bergkamp and Vieira). On the footballing side of things City beat Spurs in a one sided ~~Carling~~, ~~Capital One~~, ~~EFL~~ Carabao Cup Final. The only good thing to come from the final was the return of fans!

There is the small matter of the Champions and the Europa League semi finals midweek before Bawa gazes into his crystal ball 🔮 to make predictions for this game week; not that it makes too much of a difference as we manage to get most spectacularly wrong! 🤪

Southampton vs Leicester

After another defeat, Ralph is probably counting the days before he is relieved of his duties. The Saints allowed an out of sorts and Kane less Spurs team to beat them. Once Ings was substituted, they lost their sharpness up front and allowed Spurs a way back into the game through Bale and Son’s goals.

Leicester were shocked by a Zaha opener but thanks to goals from Castagne and Kelechi, they continue their march towards a top 4 finish. ~~Vardy~~ Kelechi & Co. will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing a limp Saints defence, and this could again get ugly for the Saints.

Bawa’s Verdict: Foxes to thump the Saints.

Crystal Palace vs Man City

Palace got out of the blocks quickly and took a lead through Zaha only to let in two in the second half to lose another game. While they aren’t mathematically safe, Bawa believes that they will manage to stay in the division for another season. It will be interesting to see if Woy and his backroom staff that also fought the Spanish flu of 1918 will continue next season with plenty of rumors that The Ginger Mourinho has been sounded out to take over the reigns for next season.

While they didn’t really have to break a sweat against Spurs, City had to strain every sinew in their UCL semi-final against PSG. Despite that, their squad depth being utterly ridiculous, one can expect Sterling & Co. to eventually prevail over the Eagles.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another City win to bring them closer to the title.

Brighton vs Leeds

Potter and his men were dealt another blow in their loss to relegated Sheffield. This whole playing decent football but not winning games narrative is getting annoying. Us fans will have to endure another five game weeks of the same nonsense and we don’t even want to mention the FPL players who have been bit badly by this Seagulls team.

Leeds played really well against United and deserved the draw. Since conceding to Arsenal, they have tightened up their defence, without it impacting their all out attacking style of play. Their spine of Meslier, Llorente and Philips will fully carry out their duties without much fuss. Bielsa will be hoping for more of the same given that Raphinha is set to miss this game as well.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds win.

Chelsea vs Fulham

Chelsea played really well to earn a draw against Madrid midweek and should have enough in the tank for Fulham. They have such a strong squad that the likes of Tammy, Giroud, Alonso, Hudson Odoi and Kepa don’t get many minutes.

When his side conceded a 97th min equaliser from Eddie Nketiah, Parker must’ve thought that this was the moment that guaranteed their relegation. Losing points from winning positions is a trend he would want to halt but it really is up to the fight left in his players to show how much they want to remain in the “best football league” in the world. A London derby might be a good place to finally start!

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Fulham loss at the Bridge.

Everton vs Aston Villa

Everton did the double over Arsenal for the first time in PL history, thanks to a poor own goal conceded by Leno. The return of DCL did pose a threat up front and Don Carlo will hope that his team can continue their winning record and push for the European spots.

Villa were lucky to score an injury time equaliser through the unlikely, Keenan Davis. They have been conceding soft goals and it was much the same against West Brom. Dean Smith would be pushing his medical staff to get Grealish fit and firing to help them move up the table and gatecrash into European contention.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Newcastle vs Arsenal

Steve Bruce’s Black and White Army are on a run and it will take some stopping them. Willock who has been their saviour in the last few games isn’t eligible to play against his parent club and will be missed. Wilson was unlucky to have his goal chopped off by some absurd rule created by people who have probably never played football or also known as VAR.

The same old story for Arsenal at home with another match lost after controlling much of the game. This team has a mistake or two in them every game and it will take a Herculean task to keep a tricky player like St. Maximin quiet. It will be interesting to see what team Mikel puts out after their loss to Villarreal on Thursday Ebening.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to win.

Man Utd. vs Liverpool (Match of the Week)

Man United had a few chances but couldn’t break down the resolute Leeds defence. Their midweek match against Roma might just be a factor but Ole knows the importance of this game better than anyone and after smashing Roma (again) he and his team will be well up for this one.

After scoring a brilliant goal, Liverpool took the foot off the pedal and allowed Newcastle into the game for them to equalise in stoppage time. Salah, Mane and Jota missed a few gilt edged chances and Klopp will remind them that they need to be brutal and less selfish in front of goal if they are to compete for the top 4 spots.

Bawa’s Verdict: An engrossing game ending in a draw, as they tend to normally be after the hype dies down.

Spurs vs Sheffield United

After adding another bottle to their trophy cabinet, Spurs will try to focus their energies on trying to finish in the top 4. Kane is back and with Mason as interim manager, the shackles might have been lifted and we might finally see some entertaining football from this talented Spurs side.

Sheffield United won a game finally but broke a lot of FPL hearts in doing the same. They didn’t really play well but took the one chance that came their way and defended resolutely. Rhian Brewster is probably the worst transfer of the season; while he is still very young, he should be able to bounce back and carve out a good career.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to light up White Hart Lane.

West Brom vs Wolves

Big Sam and his lads must be extremely disappointed to have conceded in injury time and lose two points to Arsenal. He has done a fantastic job and its the winter signings of Yokuslu, Maitland-Niles and Diagne that are shining along with Pereira.

Wolves had a match to forget against Burnley’s afternoon Wood. It was such a poor performance that there’s nothing much to write about the Portuguese B team. They can only play better & surely they must turn up for the local derby as their fans would rightly demand, in a match where local bragging rights are at stake.

Bawa’s Verdict: A boring draw.

Burnley vs West Ham

A Chris Wood hat-trick, who would’ve thought! The Clarets scored 4 for the second time this season and Ginger Pep must be guffawing away at his Lancashire home. Mathematically they aren’t safe still and playing against European football chasing West Ham won’t be easy.

While the FA has rescinded the harsh red card brandished to Balbuena the decision didn’t help in a game against a fellow rival. There are reports that Lionel Jesse is carrying an injury and this is the sort of bad fortune David Moyes would have wanted to escape.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

The La Liga is heading to a thrilling finish. With 5 matches to go and three points separating 1st from 4th, it will be intriguing to see who comes up trumps. Bawa hopes that Sevilla wins the La Liga, so that the clubs wanting to be part of ESL clubs can eat cake with goo on top of it.

Edwin Van Der Sar seems to have done well to tie down their manager upto 2023. Rumour has it that Spurs’ rumoured interest in Ten Haag forced him to sign the dotted line faster.

Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag has signed a new contract, keeping him at the Dutch club until June 2023.

He had been favourite to take over at Tottenham.

Greetings to all after what has been a seismic week in our big little world of football!!

Here’s a quick look at some numbers: 4 out of the 6 English teams that were founding members of the European Super League are not assured of a place in next year’s edition of the Champions League by virtue of their current league position. For the first time in around a decade, Juventus are looking at losing out on the qualification as well, with Napoli and Lazio putting serious pressure on the Old Lady of Piedmont. Since AC Milan last played a Champions League tie, Bawa has grown older, wiser, gotten married and had a lovely little Bawa – who would not have experienced the unrivalled joy of league football, because some filthy rich football club owners decided to milk a new cash cow, only so that they can laugh all the way to the bank.

As history will remember it, a 2 billion dollar scheme folded up in 2 days, and for the first time in his life, Petr Cech was in front and not behind the parked bus, and that sent the pack of cards falling ending up with United’s biggest trophy since Fergie left – Ed Woodward’s head!

As the week continues to give, lets look at what Bawa has to say on this week’s fixtures:

Arsenal vs Everton

The story of Lacazette’s career has written itself a chapter in North London as well. Just when it looked like he was getting to be the mean machine that he was at Lyon, Laca pulled up injured. With both Auba and Laca out, Fake Pep has a battle on his hands to finish in the top 10 forget the top 6. But then, the kids are alright & they might just bail him out again.

Gylfi Sigurdsson rolled back the years and scored a stunning strike to hammer the nail on Mou Mama’s fourth stint as a manager in the Premier League. The return of DCL and the lively form of Hameez must have Don Carlo purring. MC Kane put away the two mistakes made by Everton and while their defence is a worry, we may not see a furrowed brow on Don Carlo’s face when they face a youthful Arsenal side.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Klopp and his men stood up admirably to the grey heads at Fenway Park, culminating in a John Henry apology video. Not starting Salah might be a mistake that Klopp would not want to repeat. A visit from the Geordies will always be welcome, Klopp would just be hoping that the Toons leave their mean streak at the This is Anfield sign.

Steve Bruce’s Black and White Army are marching, and there is no stopping them. Not even Lionel Jesse could put a stop to the Looney Toon 😜 . A reinvigorated St Maximin and the return of Wilson could lead the Geordies into the comfort of mid table mediocrity, as they prepare to put themselves in the Saudi shop window this summer.

Bawa’s Verdict: Now that there is no ESL, Liverpool to continue their march towards the UCL spots.

West Ham vs Chelsea (Match of the Week)

Who would have thought that David Moyes’ men are going to be going hammer and tongs to deny one of the entitled lot a place in Europe. They would be hoping that Cresswell returns to provide a semblance of defensive stability, and Antonio is back to share the burden with Lionel J.

If not for Brighton and Dat Boy Welbz’ dogged determination to not score, the Blues would have been the chasing side in this battle for the fourth position. Havertz has been coming into his own in that False 9 position, and the Blues would be looking forward to having Mendy back between the sticks.

Bawa’s Verdict: An exciting draw.

Sheffield United vs Brighton

The biggest news coming out of Bramall Lane is that the owner of Sheffield United, who is an accomplished FPL player himself, has given in and transferred in Lingard. There is nothing much to write home about Aaron Ramsdale and ten other Blades.

This is going to be a classic tale of the entertaining host and the unwilling guest. Sheffield cannot keep a clean sheet, Brighton can’t score. However, Brighton would be hoping to put some more distance between the chasing pack and themselves here.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three point Seagulls.

Wolves vs Burnley

While the ESL lived its short life, the Wolves’ social media team lost no time in claiming what was rightfully theirs – the 2018/19 Premier League title. There’s nothing much to write about the Wolves attack, they’d hope that their defence manages to keep Wood and Vydra out while one of their outfielders manage to sneak one past the Clarets backline.

Burnley have conceded an uncharacteristic 8 goals in their last 3 games. This must have Dyche gobbling earthworms and scratching his head to figure what went wrong. While Pope has been a miss, Peacock-Farrell has not put a foot wrong as such. A pleasant surprise at the other end, the usually goal shy Claret front line have managed to keep the scorer busy in each of their last three games.

Bawa’s Verdict: Boring draw.

Leeds United vs Man Utd.

Leeds’ social media team enacted a classic Bollywood move of taking one concept that worked and killing it by using it on every possible occasion. Unlike Bamford, Llorente didn’t let down the naysayers on the field and scored a vital equaliser. While his struggles in front of goal continue, Bamford turned up in Rashfordesque form at the post match asking questions that put the larger population to shame.

Man United wrecked everyone’s expectations in the return fixture by smashing 6 past Meslier. Ole and the boys must be buoyed by the latest boost of Woodward quitting, and if they had half the enthusiasm of the fans, they should be steamrolling Leeds here. But with Leeds in fine fettle, this one is going to be much closer than one expects.

Bawa’s Verdict: Manchester Reds to take this with great discomfort.

Aston Villa vs West Brom

Villa will be without Cash at right back after his sending off against City. Villa without Grealish look a shadow of the team that was producing some fantastic results. Watkins as usual is the willing runner up front but doesn’t get the required support.

Big Sam would want his team to put one over their Midlands rivals and push towards that 17th spot. His squad seems to have finally bought into his style of play and are the in form team at the moment.

Bawa’s Verdict: A dull draw.

Leicester vs Crystal Palace

Leicester absolutely destroyed the Baggies, pouring cold water on the Big Sam Fan Army which was waking up from a slumber, and at the same time solidifying their charge to a top 4 slot. While Kelechi continued his good form, Foxes should be happy that Vardy was back to what he is doing best – banging in the goals. If I was an Eagles defender, these two aren’t the strike force that I want to be up against.

In case nobody noticed, Palace did not play in the Premier League last time around. Uncle Woy dusted his hat, pulled out the fishing rods and spent some quality time by the river, as the football world went into meltdown. Now that they are up against Kelechi & Co., among other things he’d be praying for mercy.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leicester all the way.

The Premier League did not disappoint its fans after a two-week break and surely it must be the most entertaining football league in the world. Barring 2 matches, 3 or more goals were scored in the remaining fixtures with West Brom beating Chelsea 5-2 at the Bridge and Newcastle gaining a point against Spurs as the major surprise results. The make or break part of the season is upon us and Bawa fully expects plenty more out of whack results coming with a relegation battle, mid table obscurity and the scrap for the Champions League spots coming to the boil.

So without further ado, let us take a look at Bawa’s predictions (most comical) for the week:

Fulham vs Wolves

Things looked good for Fulham until the 78th min after which their defence capitulated and allowed Villa to score 3 goals. A first start for Mitrovic since Christmas was justified when he gave them the lead but the manner in which they played the last 15 minutes will irk Parker. It’s time to play cautious but fearless football and Fulham fans will hope that their team can go on a good run to avoid relegation.

The 3-2 loss to West Ham will be a tough one to swallow as Wolves had enough opportunities to draw or even win the game. Nuno will be extremely disappointed with his defence to allow 3 easy goals on the counter without players putting their foot in to stop the danger. Offensively the lesser we talk of Willian Jose the better, the striker is so devoid of confidence that hypothetically if he was one on one with the GK he would try to pass the ball to his teammate and miss that pass as well. Yes, even worse than Timid Werner of Chelsea.

Bawa’s Verdict: A stalemate.

Man City vs Leeds

City brushed aside the Foxes with ease and are well on their way to lifting another PL title. They are still pushing for the quadruple and while Bawa hates to admit it, it is a real possibility for this squad, where Pep is ridiculously spoilt for choice. Their fortunate 2-1 win against Dortmund will force the Pep roulette despite knowing fully well that this Leeds team will give his men a run for their money. On e side note, KDB has signed a new deal and will remain at City till 2025 to destroy all records possible.

Leeds currently stand 11th in the table behind Arsenal on goal difference. While they turn up for big matches, Bielsa will hope that his team can take their chances and cause an upset. They gave City a tough game in the reverse fixture and were unlucky to just earn a point but the City team is a different beast now and Leeds will do well to come away with a point.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another entertaining draw on the cards.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Three away wins on the trot have brought some life back into the Liverpool side. They ran Arsenal ragged and totally outclassed them. Despite that unfortunate injury, Jota could still be the signing of the season and adds that sharpness to the Liverpool forward line that they were missing in the last few months. The defensive partnership of Kabak and Philips was fully exploited by Madrid and while the 7-2 isn’t fresh anymore, it will be interesting so see how they hold up against the Villans.

Grealish’s injury setback must have come as a big blow to this teammates as they failed to get going in the first half against Fulham. Credit to Dean Smith as his substitutes completely flipped the game on its head with 3 goals in 15 minutes. Liverpool’s form at home hasn’t been the best and after a tough mid-week fixture against Madrid, Villa will try their best to exploit any weaknesses.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to smash Villa.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel endured his first defeat as Chelsea manager and it was quite the humbling, losing 5-2 to a relegation threatened West Brom side. Thiago Silva must hate the sight of West Brom as he had another nightmare to forget. News of handbags between Kepa and Rudiger have been doing the rounds and while it’s the first set of thorns in the huge bed of roses for Tuchel, he would want to sort this out sooner rather than later.

The Eagles owe a huge thank you to Guaita, who had a stormer in the goal to keep Everton to just one goal. Palace is such an unpredictable team and players like Zaha and Eze embody this spirit completely to make them exciting on occasion.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to return to winning ways.

Burnley vs Newcastle

Sean Dyche must be seething to see his side lose 3-2 after taking a 2-0 lead against the Saints. Burnley pride themselves on their defensive strength but it was nowhere to be seen on the day. Wood and Vydra scoring is a good sign but Dyche will have some strong words reserved for his side to ensure they don’t drop points from winning positions.

No one in their right minds thought that Newcastle would get something out of their match against Spurs but to everyone’s surprise the Arsenal loanee, Willock scored a late equaliser that earn his side an important point. Bruce will be hoping that Saint Maximin’s injuries are behind him and a soon to be fit Wilson can help secure their time in the PL.

Bawa’s Verdict: Looney Toon win!

West Ham vs Leicester (Match of the Day)

David Moyes and his West Ham side must’ve thought of deja vu as they nearly scuppered another 3-0 lead against an out of sorts Wolves. Lionel Jesse just can’t stop bamboozling defenders, adding a Berba pirouette to his list of exploits. The race for Top 4 is heating up and West Ham are well placed for securing it but injuries to Rice and Antonio could spoil the Hammer’s game plan.

The Foxes hardly had a look in their game against City who were successful in neutralising any threat that BR’s team posed. The return of Maddison was a good sight for Leicester fans as he will be key to unlocking defences. This is a crucial game for both these teams in their pursuit of the Top 4.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Spurs vs Man Utd

After failing to beat Newcastle Mou Mama turned on his players and all is not well in the Spurs camp. Kane continues to do the business upfront but needs support from his midfield and defence of Spurs are to salvage some pride this season. It is no longer a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ Kane decides to leave Spurs in pursuit of silverware.

United might consider themselves lucky to beat Brighton for a second time this season despite playing some dire football. A season ending injury to Martial might actually help the Red devils as they can use the skill and pace of Greenwood and James upfront. Their UCL qualification is pretty much guaranteed and Ole will try to focus on winning the Europa to silence his doubters.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Sheffield vs Arsenal

Players at Bramall Lane seem disinterested and can’t wait for the season to end it seems. They don’t seem to be playing for their futures or for pride and that is certainly not expected of professionals. If they can put in some application this is a fixture they might be able to get something out of as this Arsenal team when pressured seem to be their own biggest enemy.

Mikel Arteta was at a loss of words after watching a poor Arsenal performance yet again. His players couldn’t put a string of passes together and completely forgot the basics of football. Credit to Liverpool for getting their tactics right but fans expect a lot more from experienced players like Auba and Laca. Mikel seems to be losing the dressing room and might have to put faith in his youngsters to bail him out after faltering again to keep a CS in the last few minutes of their Europa home leg.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to nick it.

West Brom vs Southampton

Big Sam along with most Baggies couldn’t believe what they witnessed at Stamford Bridge. A 5-2 drubbing of a high flying Chelsea is one of the results of the season so far and shows that there is some fight left in the Baggies. Big Sam will hope that his team doesn’t rest on its laurels and has the desire to beat a plucky Saints side at home.

Brighton vs Everton

Brighton were unlucky to not come away with a point from Old Trafford. Danny Welbeck was a menace throughout and should’ve earned a penalty but Mike Dean (as expected) and VAR thought otherwise. Potter will want to get a result against Everton to ease the pressure and distance between the Seagulls and the relegation spots.

If it wasn’t for DCL and Richarlison’s profligacy in front of goal, Everton would’ve been out of sight in the first 30 minutes against Palace. While Guaita made a few good saves, poor finishing led Don Carlo down. The fact that Everton has a game in hand keeps their hopes for a top 4 finish alive but by looking at their recent performances it might not be a reality.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another draw.

An absolutely mental GW. If you are a football fan (especially a Spurs fan). It is probably best that you keep all your hopes aside, and enjoy the football, thinking you are a neutral. The only predictable feature of PL these days seems to be that of Sheffield getting stuffed.

While we barely have half a GW, there are a lot of other important fixtures which PL clubs will be involved in. Let’s have a look at the key fixtures for this week:

Premier League:

Fulham vs Leeds

What has been the immovable object of recent weeks comes face to face against the Leeds attack. Parker and his defence had built a steady momentum, before they got hit by the Sheikh-storm helmed by Pep. It will be interesting to see how they respond to a relentlessly attacking side in Leeds.

If there is one thing that Leeds do right, and which might help them break through the Cottagers – is that they attack relentlessly. However, the propensity to miss a bucketload of chances (Bamford could’ve already had 35 goals for the season had he converted 75% of his chances) AND be erratic in defence could come to hurt them, putting a lot in the hands of young Meslier. Bielsa is not known to chop and change his side, and with an injury doubt to the ever present Bamford, it will be interesting to see how Bielsa reacts.

Bawa’s Verdict: Sides to share the spoils.

Brighton vs Newcastle

Ever since we called them out to be a shite side in this blog, Potter and his boys seem to have turned a corner. They have managed to score and even pick up points in what could be a crucial encounter against the Saints. With just 1 point separating these two sides, this could be a massive game for the teams that harbour any hopes of staying in the PL.

Steve Bruce will also be having one eye on the Fulham game while having his boys warm up for this game. Newcastle always manage to surprise us when it matters, sometimes with flair, sometimes with absurdity and recently with dogged spirit which saw Lascelles head home an equaliser at the death. With a game in hand over Fulham, Brucey would breathe easy if his team come away with a result here.

Bawa’s Verdict: Nervous draw to make things tighter around the relegation zone.

West Ham vs Arsenal

The Irons lost the Lingard/Moyes derby at Old Trafford. That shouldn’t take any credit away from Fabianski and his cohort at the back though. The return of the talismanic Lionel Jesse to the starting line up should add some wind to Moyes’ wings.

Fortune favoured the ~~brave~~ Gunners in the North London Derby. VAR didn’t play spoilsport in handing the Gunners a dodgy penalty, even though a Lamela rabona (potential goal of the season) helped Spurs take the lead against the run of play. That said, the Gunners are known to blow hot and cold, only time will tell what is going to happen this time around in another London derby.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Aston Villa vs Spurs

More than Dean Smith, the owners of Villa FPL assets were left devastated by the last minute draw at Tyneside. Nevertheless, the Villa machine must pick itself up, as they are now up against an even more distraught Mou Mama’s side. As long as they keep finding someone to put the ball in the net, the ex-Gunner Martinez and the (possibly) returning Jack Grealish should have enough in their tank to frustrate Spurs.

Mou Mama must have had nothing to say to his side after the loss last weekend and then in midweek. Just when everyone thought Spurs had figured their best combo with Son, Kane and Bale – Kane recovers just in time for the NLD and Son hobbles off in less than 20 mins with Bale applying a little too much vanishing cream in warmup 😉. You just don’t buy that kind of luck.

Bawa’s Verdict: A point to each team.

F.A. Cup:

Bournemouth vs Southampton

The only better PL opponent that the Cherries could have got, on form, would have been the Blades. The Cherries are 2 points off the play-off spots in the Championship, and with less than 10 rounds to go, anything is possible. The Jonathan Woodgate led side have had a mixed bag of results this month, and the Saints should be fair game.

Saints’ PL campaign is pretty much doomed. The day when they celebrated being top of the PL table seems to be long forgotten and buried. A Che Adams’ scoring run would be encouraging, and Ralph would be hoping that they can make the best of having opponents from a lower league.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to take this in extra time.

Everton vs Man City (Match of the Week I)

Don Carlo’s midfield has been hampered by injuries. He’d be happy with the performance of Tom Davies, who first ably stood in for Allan, and now stands in for Doucoure. The Toffees have lost two on the bounce, including having been outscored by Burnley. This isn’t the team that they would want to face given their current form and underwhelming performances.

There is no respite from the Pep Roulette. As Twitter jokes, the only thing left now, is for Pep to name 10 men in the starting line up, and still end up winning comfortably. The City machine is in ruthless form, with all of their attacking assets are scoring for fun – and if none of them do, then in John Stones We Trust.

Bawa’s Verdict: The blue of Manchester to take this comfortably.

Chelsea vs Sheffield United

Chelsea have been notorious for not blooding youngsters, and farming them out on loan instead; (they currently have 47 players out on loan). If there was one game where Tuchel could afford to do that, then this is it. Chelsea have been brilliant in defence but pathetic in attack. This is around the time when Tuchel could safely blame Lampard for having splurged money, to little or no avail.

The Blades have just given up on this season, and the board room is preparing for life in the Championship, so that they can fight to climb back into the top tier. There can just be no other justification for the absurdity that they have been peddling on the pitch. A crazy cup run could just be the morale booster that they need, but it’s very difficult to see that happening.

Bawa’s Verdict: Tuchel to make it 14 games undefeated.

Leicester vs Man Utd (Match of the Week II)

The Foxes didn’t break a sweat in their outing against the Blades. They calmly slotted 5 past Ramsdale with Vardy missing a few chances uncharacteristically. While you would expect them to have no issues with handling the United defence, the Reds’ backline has been a different beast with Henderson taking charge of goalkeeping duties. Brendan hasn’t had the best of times against United and this could continue here.

United have calmly being getting the job done. If only Haguire had opted to finish instead of clear the lines against AC Milan, this March could have looked very different for Ole. Nevertheless, they would want to get to the familiar territory of the semi finals, and hopefully take it forward from there.

Bawa’s Verdict: United to take it in extra time.

Leagues of Yonder:

UCL and UEL draws for the quarter finals are out and throws up some tasty fixtures. Sancho’s return to Manchester will be interesting while last years finalists face off again when Bayern take on PSG. Chelsea will be the happiest with their game against Porto but should underestimate the Portuguese giants at their own peril.

While it hasn’t happened very often, the fact that both City and Liverpool lost in the same weekend shows the unpredictable nature of this season. While City lost to a fantastic performance by their fierce Manchester rivals, Liverpool were not able to find a way past a resolute Fulham side and life ain’t as rosy this season for the champions who have now lost an incredible 6 games in a row at home for the first time in their history. The battle for the top 4 is heating up with Leicester, Chelsea and West Ham carrying on their fine form and the likes of Everton, Spurs pushing hard to gatecrash that party. With intriguing fixtures coming up, here’s Bawa’s take on the weekend matches:

Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Newcastle earned an important point against the Baggies to stay above the relegation spots. While Shelvey and Willock had presentable chances, Bruce will be happy that his side didn’t concede. With 11 games to go, Bruce will hope that fortune favours his troops as without the injured trio of St. Maximin, WIlson, Almiron, they are seriously devoid of quality upfront.

While Jack Grealish continuing to be a big miss for Villa, if their players continue with the crossbar challenge in games, they might lose out on a European spot come the end of the season. Dean Smith will be happy with the defensive side of things but needs his talisman to return and pull the strings in midfield to get positive results.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to slice open the Toon.

Leeds vs Chelsea

Leeds is definitely the most entertaining team in the PL this season but Bielsa would ditch that tag for the most consistent side. Raphinha continues to create chance after chance to see Bamford miss again and again, along with a few other profligate teammates. They did have the ball in the back of the net twice against West Ham in the first 15 minutes which were both ruled out by VAR. Defensively, the lesser said the better, they concede soft goals from set pieces and it’s a real surprise that Bielsa has not been able to plug that gap.

Since Tuchel’s arrival, Chelsea haven’t conceded a goal at home, setting a new PL record. The London club brushed aside teams from Merseyside with ease and come into this fixture full on confidence. Timo Werner again missed a few chances to score against Everton and Bawa feels that it is still a little early to add him to the list of flops to wear the Chelsea blue, upfront. Chelsea look like a mean unit and it will take something special to beat this team.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to continue their winning run under ze German.

Crystal Palace vs West Brom

The Palace side were brought back to reality in the second half against Spurs after Benteke had scored a fantastic equalising header just before half time. Woy usually builds his team around a steady defence but that has not been the case this term. With Zaha back in the fold, the Eagles will hope to regain that cutting edge upfront that has deserted them in the last month.

West Brom are now tougher to beat and have kept three clean sheets and earned six points in their past five games. This upturn in form might just be a little too late in the season. In Diagne they have a solid centre forward who can bully defences and he will be licking his lips for this one.

Bawa’s Verdict: A West Brom win to make it interesting at the bottom.

Everton vs Burnley

Don Carlo looked a frustrated figure on the sidelines against Chelsea. Even though Pickford conceded a penalty he was solely responsible for keeping the score to a respectable 2-0 loss. To cater to Richarlison’s good form and accommodate Sigurdsson, Carlo has played DCL slightly wide and isn’t getting his best in front of goal.

Burnley were lucky to get a point against Arsenal. They were awarded a free goal and were lucky to not concede a penalty at death. How VAR didn’t overturn the decision is still a mystery to most football fans. But one can take nothing away from the commitment shown by Mee, Tarkowski and Pieters by putting their bodies on the line to prevent danger and some instances a sure shot goal.

Bawa’s Verdict: Everton has too much quality to not get a result.

Fulham vs Man City

Fulham’s 1-0 win against the defending champions is probably the biggest upset of the season so far. In fact their performance was so good that they could’ve scored a few more and not conceded even if the game went on for another few hours. On the back of some solid defensive performances, they are level on points with Brighton in 17th and four points behind Burnley in 15th and might just be able to pull off the great escape.

The City juggernaut failed to show up against their bitter Manchester rivals and lost their first game in 21 but snapped back with a 5-2 dismantling of Saints. While going 21 matches unbeaten is a fantastic achievement, Pep will have to remind his team to not take their foot off the gas as stranger things have happened in football. Bawa fully expects City to score a few in this one despite Fulham’s resolute defence.

Bawa’s Verdict: The City juggernaut to destroy another London team.

Southampton vs Brighton

Despite an injury to their main man, Danny Ings, Saints outclassed Sheffield who seem to already be planning for their lives in the Championship. Hasenhüttl must be happy with the clean sheet and would have hoped that his team build on that performance. And then came City, where after a brief moment of hope, RR Mahrez and KDB absolutely destroyed the Saints. Ralph will have to rebuild after yet another defeat to a Manchester club.

Brighton finally managed to score and take the lead against Leicester but eventually succumbed to a 2-1 loss courtesy to a mistake by Sanchez. Brighton are level on points with Fulham now and cannot afford any slip ups, in other words, they need to score goals.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to begin their rebuilding.

Leicester vs Sheffield

The Foxes are in such a good vein of form that no matter the missing personnel or team in front, they find a way to get a result in their favour. Despite a massive injury list they were able to come from behind to beat Brighton and stay in the top 4 at the moment.

The Blades seem to have accepted their fate of getting relegated this season as the team doesn’t seem to be even putting in the hard yards expected of them. Wilder looks like a dejected man on the touchline and if rumours are to be believed looks all set to be relieved of his duties at Bramall Lane.

Arsenal vs Spurs (Match of the Week)

It seems that this Arsenal team just loves to shoot themselves in the foot. They were in control of the game against Burnley when Xhaka decided to gift Wood a present. While Arteta will moan about a nailed on penalty not being awarded, his team needs to take their chances when they have their tails up.

Spurs are playing some fantastic attacking football contrary to what people might have to say. Kane, Bale and Son are ripping teams apart with their speed and guile and Mou Mama’s side come into this game as favourites.

Bawa’s Verdict: A moment of brilliance to settle this.

United vs West Ham

An Ole masterclass got the better of his bald Manchester counterpart. United deserved the three points and they took full advantage of the chances awarded to them while keeping the City game changers at bay. Luke Shaw scored a brilliant goal. It looks like he is finally realising his true potential. Ole will hope that long may it continue.

West Ham continue to keep churning out wins and challenge for the top four. Jesse Lingard has been a massive signing for the Hammers but will miss the game as he can’t play against his parent club. Moyes will hope that Antonio can bully the United defenders to submission and come away with a result from Old Trafford.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw.

Wolves vs Liverpool

Wolves were lucky to come away from Villa with a point on the balance of play while they themselves had a chance or two. Pedro Neto looks like the only player that can influence the proceedings upfront as the likes of Traore and Willian Jose struggle to impose themselves on games.

Jurgen Klopp and his team looks like a ghost of their former selves. Liverpool have astonishingly lost six games on the bounce at home and have seemed to lost their way. With the quality in their squad, it is just a matter of time that they start clicking but a little soul searching is important if they are to salvage any pride this season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to return to winning ways.

But Bawa is really disappointed with journalists failing to pose a single question to Sérgio Conceição, the Porto manager, after what might be his biggest victory. Come on lads, show some respect!

Another Double Game Week 🙌🏼

A new week, a new controversy and it’s the Fantasy Premier League this time. It appears that players and club staff taking out injured first team players from their FPL teams is considered to be a team leak. Aston Villa has already banned its players from playing the fantasy game and this may become the norm rather than the exception. Bawa firmly believes that players should never have been allowed to play this godforsaken game in the first place.

Forgotten men, Olivier Giroud and Dele Alli reminded teams, managers and fans of their quality by scoring fantastic overhead kicks in their respective games against Atletico Madrid and Wolfsberger. The PL on the other hand was a little less forgiving to Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs in their chase for top 4. The champions not only lost their derby to Everton at Anfield for the first time since 1999 but also lost their captain to injury to further add to their woes.

Another Double Game week is upon us and Bawa hopes to get at least 50% of his predictions right considering the piss poor performance last weekend, so without further ado, let’s get down to business:

Man City vs West Ham

Raheem Sterling continued his great form against the Gunners and scored a header, yes, a header to help City to a comfortable 1-0 victory. The Blue machine didn’t even have to get out of first gear against a decent Arsenal side and this looks ominous for the pack chasing them. Pep could even afford to rotate his first XI for their Champions League tie against Borussia Mönchengladbach in which he saw his team extend their winning record to 19 matches.

David finally got one over “Joliath” and emerged victorious in the London derby. Who would’ve thought that West Ham would be challenging for the top four after 25 matches into the season. Moyes had found a way to inspire his string quartet and its great to see them play with grit and finesse when needed, aided in no less amount by Lionel Jesse.

Bawa’s Verdict: The City juggernaut to destroy another London team.

West Brom vs Brighton

Despite Ajayi’s sending off in the 30th minute, West Brom spurned great opportunities to only earn a point in the battle of attrition against Burnley. Diagne seems like a good signing but misses too many chances for a striker who plays in a team struggling for points. Time is running out for Big Sam and his reputation of helping teams avoid relegation. Unless he gets the sack first, Bawa just cannot see a miracle in sight for Big Sam and the Baggies.

Another fantastic performance and yet another loss against their arch rivals Crystal Palace puts Potter’s position in jeopardy. Brighton managed to muster 25 shots on target to Palace’s 3 and earned 13 corners to 0 which goes to prove that all these possession stats don’t really mean much. Brighton are in the relegation fight whether they like it or not and really need to win this one.

Bawa’s Verdict: A dogged Brighton win.

Leeds vs Villa

Leeds were probably the better team and were unfortunate to lose to Wolves thanks to a freak own goal by Meslier. Their response, as expected was to thump Saints to a 3-0 win. Raphinha is their man of the moment and sets up chance after chance for this teammates who find a million ways to such golden opportunities. The Brazilian’s flair is well complimented by the likes of Dallas and Ayling who stay true to Bielsa’s murder ball with their lung-busting runs throughout the game to fight as a collective and help in both offensive and defensive situations.

Aston Villa’s loss to Leicester had more to do with news off the field than on. Jack Grealish’s omission due to injury with some of his teammates removing him from their FPL teams before hand caused a stir as it was considered a team leak. Dean Smith was extremely unhappy about it but would be even more annoyed by the lack of desire shown by his team in their performance against the Foxes.

Bawa’s Verdict: An all out attacking game culminating in a draw.

Newcastle vs Wolves

Newcastle have slowly dragged themselves into a relegation scrap and its not looking good for Steve Bruce and his squad. Despite a fine goal by Allan St. Maximin, the Geordies failed to trouble the much maligned United defence. They can’t be relying on a 21 year old on loan to be the saviour and need their experienced campaigners like Shelvey, Dummett and Lascelles to step up.

A freak own goal by Meslier helped Wolves to another undeserved victory. If rumours are to be believed Raul Jimenez has stepped up his rehabilitation and has started practicing with the ball. Adama Traore is starting to regain confidence in those muscular legs of his and makes him another tricky player that opposition teams will have to defend against.

Bawa’s Verdict: Wolves to inflict further misery on the Black and White army.

Crystal Palace vs Fulham

Palace mugged the Seagulls in injury time to come away with 3 points. Palace fans will be extremely happy that their strikers were able to find the back of the net but the true heroes of the game were Cahill and Ward who thwarted attack after attack. Mateta opened his account for the club with a back heel nutmeg and has all the attributes to be an effective player for the Eagles. Zaha is still a big miss and Woy will be hoping to get his talisman back into the lineup as soon as possible.

Fulham’s 1-0 win against fellow relegation battlers, Sheffield, will give them a lot of confidence and some hope for survival. On the back of some solid defensive performances, the team has found a spark going forward and finally look like a PL team. Bawa hopes that for Fulham’s sake these performances aren’t a little too late in the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A boring draw.

Leicester vs Arsenal

The Foxes are in such a good vein of form that no matter the missing personnel or team in front, they find a way to get a result in their favour. While Vardy was kept relatively quiet as per his usual standards, Maddison and Barnes stepped up and wreaked havoc against Villa. Vardy has a great record of scoring goals against Arsenal and with both teams needing a win in their Europa tie, this game might be settled by one moment of magic.

Conceding a headed goal 70 seconds into a match against City was definitely not part of the plan Mikel might have set out for this team. Arsenal were on the back foot throughout and huffed and puffed for nothing. Auba seems to have lost a yard of pace and Bellerin was overawed by his opponents that he couldn’t control the ball or make a simple 2 yard pass. Arsenal realistically don’t have a chance for the top 4 and might have ended up expending a lot of energy against Benfica to move to the Europa Round of 16.

Bawa’s Verdict: A moment of brilliance to settle this.

Spurs vs Burnley

Mou Mama continues to watch his side with blinders and thought his team should have won the game against West Ham 🤔. Kane and Son aren’t as lethal as they were earlier in the season and this over-reliance will be the undoing of Spurs. Gareth Bale and Dele Alli showed some flashes of their quality and their fans will be hoping that Mou Mama swallows his pride and can give them a chance to strut their stuff.

Burnley were lucky to get a point from their game against a 10 man West Brom. Tarkowski’s goal line clearance probably gets Sean Dyche’s more hard than when his team plays free flowing football, scoring 3 in a PL game. This fixture will be another challenge for his dogged defence and another 0-0 will serve them well.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Mou Mama masterclass in moaning.

Chelsea vs Man Utd (Match of the Week)

Since Tuchel’s arrival, Chelsea haven’t lost a game with this being the most challenging week as the Blues manager after a tough midweek game against Atletico. While Timo Werner hasn’t scored near enough goals expected of him, there are other attributes to his game play that make him important to Chelsea current style of play. Without Thiago Silva the defence seems a little fragile but the hard working midfield duo of Kante and Kovacic fill in for this absence.

United took full toll of a Geordies team lacking confidence and easily swatted them aside. A relaxed mid-week owing to their first leg performance against Sociedad, sets them up well to take on Chelsea. Rashford and Bruno are in great form and Ole will hope that they combine again to deliver a positive result in this one. Bawa doesn’t want to waste his breath to discuss the defence as it will remain suspect till the time Haguire and Lundelof play together.

Sheffield vs Liverpool

The Blades seem to have accepted their fate of getting relegated this season as the team doesn’t seem to be even putting in the hard yards expected of them. Wilder looks like a dejected man on the touchline and no matter what he tries, his team finds a way to scupper his plans.

Jurgen Klopp is the first manager to lose a derby at home to Everton and this month couldn’t end sooner for the German. Liverpool have tried 17 combinations at the back and while thats never a good thing, injuries have really hampered this department of the team. Now with Henderson also down with injury, Klopp will moan about not being able to play a midfield despite the services of Ox, Keita, Thiago, Shaqiri, Gini, Jones, available to him.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to take out all their frustrations in this one.

Everton vs Southampton

Don Carlo pulled a cat out of the bag and beat his city rivals at their fortress for the first time since 1999. The defence was immense and Pickford had a very good game. DCL’s return from injury and Richarlison’s form in front of goal will boost the Toffees and with a game in hand set them up for another push for European places.

Saints have lost 7 in 8 and the plan to rest Ings and Minamoto was baffling at best. Hasenhüttl must be under tremendous pressure and will be hoping that his team can muster up some courage after the beating they took at the hands of Leeds.

Bawa’s Verdict: The Don Carlo show to continue.

Man City vs Wolves

If there was one team that was going to be easy to call, it’s City. City’s well oiled machinery should not have much of an issue in seeing off the Wolves.

Uncle Nuno knows that the only way they are going to get anything from this game is by defending for their lives. Wolves’ attacking form coupled with City’s defensive form does not help us see any scoring opportunity for the Wolves at all.

Bawa’s Verdict: A hard fought City win.

Burnley vs Leicester

Like Uncle Nuno, the Ginger Mourinho would also know that defense is the best form of taking anything from this game. However, the difference being Dyche loves that idea. Pope and Co would be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at Vardy & Co.

While the jury would be out on how Leicester play without Maddison against a tired Arsenal squad, Burnley should be less of a hindrance. A counterattack or two should be enough to settle this in their favour.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine Leicester win.

Sheffield vs Villa

Unless Wilder has found the magic potion and ensured that all of his squad have taken it, even a Grealish-less Villa are going to be a daunting task. Not in the least because they need to score past Emi Martinez.

Villa would be happy to take the three that the Blunt Blades offer. Dean Smith, will be hoping that his side don’t create a mess, stick to the basics up front and knock in a goal or two and go home with the three points to keep the pressure on Liverpool.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to take away 3 points.

Palace vs Man Utd

How Palace managed to pull a win against Fernandes FC early on in the season is still mind boggling. While Uncle Woy would still hope to count on Haguire and Lindelof, the absence of Zaha is going to be telling.

One of the many things that Bawa has failed to understand about Ole, is the squad rotation. Why start Bruno in a game that Shola Shoretire, Amad Diallo and co should have run riot in. In any case, considering Palace’s dire form, United should win, but then you never know with this season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Reds to thrash Palace.

Fulham vs Spurs

Bawa is all for Fulham staying up. Everyone had Parker to be the first manager to be fired this season, but he has done a wonderful job. All credit to the resolute Fulham defence. They’d have their job cut out against Mou Mama’s two pronged attack though.

MC Kane has had a good time against the bottom half of the table this season. Historically, he has also had good returns against Fulham. Mou Mama will be hoping that MC will bring all of that to the table in this fixture. Breaking Fulham’s defence is not going to be easy though, especially with the Spurs attack being over reliant on MC and Son.

Bawa’s Verdict: Teams to share the spoils.

West Brom vs Everton

Baggies can’t be bothered can they. Their only hope would be that the Everton defence doesn’t seem to bother against teams outside the top-6 as well. This means Pereira and his cohort might have the chance to score a few.

While Pereira and cohort might score a few, there is no doubt that DCL and his cohort will outscore them. Johnstone is going to be in for a torrid time, especially with an Everton side that’s buzzing after their last away performance!

Bawa’s Verdict: Another away Everton win.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

The injury fairy doesn’t seem to be intent on leaving the red half of Liverpool. This roulette seems to be hitting the Scousers worse than the Pep Roulette hits FPL fans. Just when they cheered the return of Jota to training, they find out that Henderson is out for the long run – which also means that Klopp needs to find a new CB pairing.

Tuchel’s Chelsea seem to be a massive improvement from Lampard’s. However, this DGW is going to be a massive test of nerves for the German as he faces United and Liverpool. While the United result is going to have an effect on their performance here, the Blues would fancy their chances against a makeshift defence.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

You can never keep Zlatan out of this section, as he returns to headline the UEFA Europa League – Round of 16 fixtures. Man United vs AC Milan and AS Roma vs Shaktar Donetsk being the top fixtures of the round.

Thierry Henry’s managerial career has taken yet another Va Va Voom turn, in the short time that it has been alive. The Frenchman has decided to end his stint at Montreal and return to London for personal reasons. Au revoir!

One of the most powerful figures in the women’s game continues to shatter stereotypes. Alex Morgan returned to the USWNT after becoming a mother and helped the USWNT to another SheBelieves Cup.

As the European competitions are back midweek, Bawa expects a few more upsets in the PL due to fatigue, injuries and COVID. While Klopp conceded Liverpool’s title defence, United’s failure to beat West Brom increases the gap to 10 points at the top as the City juggernaut made little work of the so called Spurs and Everton test. Other than City winning, the only consistent thing this season are the increasingly incompetent referees and their failure in consistently applying VAR.

So without further ado, let’s get down to this week’s predictions:

Wolves vs Leeds

A Wolves win was one of the surprise results of the week. While the penalty might seem harsh, there was no question of the fantastic goal scored by Pedro Neto – who has stepped up big time in the absence of Jimenez. Nuno really needs to stop tinkering with his defensive shape / formations if he wants his Wolves side to finish in the top half of the table.

Leeds are probably the only team in the PL who don’t know when they are beaten; being down 3 goals at half time, they came back to halve the arrears come the end of the game. Alioski might have learnt a thing or two about humility as Saka ran him ragged from the first minute. While some may say that they came away with nothing from the Emirates, Bielsa might disagree as he might have found inspiration for a new formation.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to out run the Wolves.

Southampton vs Chelsea

Saints have lost six PL matches in a row since they beat Liverpool 1-0 and its not looking pretty. The team seems to have run out of gas and Hasenhüttl will have to really pull a rabbit out the bag if they want to stop the rut this weekend. The only positive from the Wolves defeat was Danny Ings getting back to the scoresheet but he will need to be a lot more ruthless against a confident Chelsea side.

Timo Werner finally managed to get one over the line and will hope that this kickstarts his career at Chelsea. With just 1 goal conceded in his first 4 games, Tuchel was confident enough to say Tu Khel to Kepa against Newcastle, who responded with a clean sheet. Chelsea have quietly gone about their business and currently sit in fourth.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to run riot.

Burnley vs West Brom

One doesn’t usually associate Burnley with free flowing football, but that’s exactly what they did in their 3-0 win at Selhurst Park. Sean Dyche and his team have turned a corner and surprisingly have scored 4 goals, twice in the last 6 matches. With Ben Mee having satisfied concussion protocols, Sean Dyche will sleep well knowing his defence is back.

The Baggies fluffed their chance of securing a remarkable win against the mighty Manchester United at the Hawthorns. While Diagne took his goal well, he missed two great opportunities that a striker should score from. Big Sam’s worry is if they can keep this form and secure a few wins but this Burnley defence will be a lot more testing and resolute than the one they came up against last weekend.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Liverpool vs Everton (Match of the Week)

The Merseyside derby is here and Bawa hopes its much like the previous one, feisty with a few goals, red cards and the teams sharing the spoils. Keeping loyalties aside, one has to feel for Jurgen Klopp who in addition to his teams poor performances had to cope with his mother’s demise without being allowed to pay his last respects. Their midweek 2-0 win against RB Leipzig will help restore some confidence but they would need to do much better in defence if they are to win this one.

Don Carlo must be wondering whether it was the rigours of United draw and the Spurs win or the overconfidence that they were completely outplayed by relegation battling Fulham. DCL’s injury is a concern but he needs the likes of Gomes, Hamez and Richarlison to step up if they are to come away with anything from this derby. Liverpool players will be looking at Pickford and baying for blood for his horror tackle on VVD in the reverse fixture.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to edge this.

Fulham vs Sheffield

The Cottagers come into this with a rich vein of form and will be hoping to get 3 points in this one. Josh Maja couldn’t have asked for a better full debut, bagging a brace and helping his team to an unexpected win. If the forwards continue to take their chances, there is a chance that Fulham might make a fist of fighting for Premier League survival after all.

The Blades got back to their bad habits and were out run by an in form West Ham. West Ham played without a recognised striker and yet Wilder’s defence was pulled left, right and centre, chasing shadows. This is a must win game for Sheffield, failing which their fate will be sealed for relegation.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Home win for Fulham.

West Ham vs Spurs

West Ham hammered the Blades without a frontline striker with Lingoo making things tick in the final third. This is a much more difficult game on paper and Moyes will be hoping to have Antonio, his fatigued striker back in contention to start. The 3-3 in the reverse derby is probably the match of the season so far and we hope we get served much more of the same.

With rumours coming out of London that Mou Mama might be facing the axe, one can fully expect ANOTHER rearguard display from Spurs who might sucker punch West Ham on the counter. Kane and Son were neutralised by City but should have more freedom to express themselves in this one. The form of Hugo Lloris between the sticks has been patchy at best and Spurs fans will be hoping for a much improved performance from their captain. While the absence of MC from the bench might worry Spurs’ fans, rumours are that he was just being rested for the league.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Entertaining Draw.

Villa vs Leicester

Villa just about managed to hold on to a 0-0 draw against Brighton thanks to an inspired performance from Emi Martinez. The fact that Villa didn’t offer much offensively won’t worry Dean Smith much as they have been producing the goods so far and this performance might have been the odd one out.

The comeback win against the reigning champions tells us what a fantastic job Rodgers has done at LCFC. Maddison was right when he said that the injuries to the Foxes aren’t spoken of enough by the media and yet they find themselves in the top 4. They play a really exciting brand of football and are a really good team to watch.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Entertaining Draw.

Arsenal vs Man City

Arsenal’s pressing blew Bielsa’s plan out of the water and the Gunners produced their best half of football this season so far. Auba playing through the middle and scoring a hat-trick couldn’t have come at a better time even though he missed a few chances against Benfica. The defence is still shockingly porous but if the the forwards can take their chances upfront, the team might be able to compete with City.

Pep comes up against his former assistant but has nothing to worry about as typically Arsenal are found chasing shadows in this matchup. KDB and Aguero have miraculously declared themselves fit as they love to play against the Gunners. Gundogan seamlessly replaced KDB in the midfield and scored 9 goals in 9 games, that too despite missing a penalty. And if ze german doesn’t get you then there is Ederson who can pick a pass to break any team’s defence, just ask Mou Mama and Davison Sanchez. Gundo really did Sanchez dirty there 🤓.

Bawa’s Verdict: The City juggernaut to destroy everything in sight.

Man Utd vs Newcastle

United were expected to win away at the Hawthorns but were lucky to come away with a point. The Lindelof/Maguire partnership had ANOTHER game to forget as they were outmuscled and outpaced by a team threatened by relegation. Ole knows that he lost the chance to cover ground on City and will need to crack the whip to get his team not to drop their level. In a best case scenario, he would want them to play like they played Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Typical of Newcastle, despite a fine start, the Geordies will have to do well to steer clear of a relegation battle. Without Wilson, Bawa can’t see who will score for them but its United so expect 3 Newcastle United players to have their best performances of their career so far.

Bawa’s Verdict: 3 point Reds.

Brighton vs Crystal Palace

Another fantastic performance yielding a draw sums up Brighton’s season thus far. They play some lovely stuff but just can’t convert their chances or come up against keepers in the form of their lives. Potter would hope that things turn and his side can take advantage of such good performances to climb the ladder.

Palace were thumped by Burnley and the lack of fight in their performance must be really disturbing for their fans. Uncle Woy seems more interested in getting vaccinated than in his teams performances and understandably so as the Eagles were absolutely dire. On paper they have a good team but they rarely deliver and to think they won at Old Trafford and drew against Arsenal.

Bawa’s Verdict: The Seagulls to add further misery to the Eagles.

Leeds vs Southampton

As part of their double game week Bielsa’s men will hope to win 3 points to remain above the Saints. After a tough fixture against Wolves, it will be interesting to see the team he puts out as his squad is ravaged with injuries.

Saints can’t catch a break. After some tough fixtures against the likes of United and Wolves they play Chelsea and Leeds in 2 days. Kudos once again to the scheduling team at PL. Saints have injury worries of their own and would want to avoid another morale damaging defeat.

Bawa’s Verdict: One goal to tip it either way.

Champions League returned on Tuesday with PSG going berserk against Barcelona in the first leg without Neymar. Mbappe bagged a fantastic hat-trick and ran the Barca defence rugged despite all their attempts.

Not to be outdone, Erling Haaland stepped up and showed his class by grabbing a brace to help Dortmund to a 3-2 win against Sevilla. Bawa is extremely excited to watch these lads motivate each other and torment defences for a long long time.

News from the Championship, where referee Darren Drysdale decided to summon his inner Hulk and square up to an Ipswich midfielder. Refs in England clearly seem to be affected a bit more by this so called Mercury Retrograde.
