The Final Fury

Featured

Greetings!!

Here we are, at the end of a quite frankly ridiculous and a pundit shaming of a season! It is one which has been unprecedented in so many ways and we are unlikely to see one like this for many years. Half way through this season, nobody would’ve bet their hard earned money on City to run away with the championship. After the start that they had, nobody would have suggested Ole’s United would finish second (albeit a distant one but with a game to spare), & West Ham inspired by United ol’ boys, Moyes & Messi Lingard to within a whisker of qualifying for Europe.

The season has been dominated by a lot of themes but some stayed constant like VAR, refereeing howlers, muscle injuries and Spurs bottling it time and again. We are set up for an exciting last day of the season, with two Champions League and the Europa League spots up for grabs.

All in all, this was a brilliant experience for Bawa. You read some, you absolutely ignored some & in the end, we know that there are a few hundred lovely people out there (thanks to the wordpress data capture analytics) who turn up every week, only to see us get our predictions absolutely wrong. Thank you for supporting & bearing with us and in the interest of maintaining discipline; we refuse to go away quietly as we intend to go out all gun’s blazing. It’s one last opportunity for us to get all our predictions hilariously wrong.

On that note, let us have a look at what Bawa has to say (with full confidence) on the final set of matches.

Here’s to plenty of goals & final day madness!!

Arsenal vs Brighton

AFTV can go into an absolute meltdown and they couldn’t be faulted for their manager publicly accepting that they have made a lot of mistakes this season and they need to learn. The criticism that Arteta got an easy job because he sat on Pep’s bench grows louder. On the other hand, Arteta has definitely made improvements and a little bit more patience could reap them rich rewards. Nothing much to say about their squad but them kids be alright!

In Dat Boy Welbz, Brighton will be missing a major attacking outlet. The former Arsenal man has been Potter’s respite in the weeks that have gone by. Lewis Dunk’s return from suspension should be a boost though. In what could be his last game for the Seagulls, Dunk’s presence in both the boxes could be crucial.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to take this by a few goals.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

Villa have completely tapered from where they were at the start of the season. Consequently, they also pose a much milder threat to Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions (if the Blues don’t end up taking it at Porto). Grealish’s return in the last match would have been a relief to Smith, and the Englishman would want to put in one last performance in the shop window before someone swoops in for him for what would be the GDP of Liberia & Sierra Leone combined.

Chelsea post Tuchel have been what their fans would have wanted all season. Timo VARner had yet another goal written off due to VAR. But Rudiger and Jorginho ensured that Chelsea seriously reduced the threat levels of Leicester to their place in next season’s UCL. As long as Tuchel puts Mendy between the sticks, they should be alright!

Credits: @goal (Twitter)

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to just edge this.

Fulham vs Newcastle

Fulham, who swiftly return to the Championship and have nothing to play for but pride will take on the Geordies at home. In a season of ‘what-if’, the Cottagers would seriously wonder how things could have turned out, if their attack had turned up in at least half of the games that they drew.

Newcastle have built up a brilliant momentum to please their potential Saudi suitors. Joe Willock would also want to top his form off with another brilliant showing before he returns to his place that is unfairly occupied by an expensive signing or two at the Emirates.

Bawa’s Verdict: Howay The Lads – Newcastle to sign off with a win.

Leeds vs West Brom

It’s their first Premier League home game in more than a decade in front of their fans. Bielsa’s boys would want to dance around the Baggies to give their fans something to cheer. Expect a few goals and a raucous crowd.

Big Sam will also leave his post at the Hawthorns after this game, making him the second PL fossil that will be without a job at the end of the season. It’s all about Pereira (if he starts as he is carrying a small injury) and how he can show other PL clubs what they would get by keeping him in the Prem. There is nothing much to write about the Baggies squad now.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to run riot

Leicester vs Spurs (Match of the Week)

The Foxes completed a brilliant Cup run but seem to have lost steam in the Prem. The absence of Evans seems to be hurting them defensively. Iheanacho meanwhile continues to score for fun, and by the looks of the Spurs defence, should continue to as well. Brodgers would know that his side will have to give it all, to displace his former club from the top 4 or else face elimination from the CL AGAIN on the last day.

Ryan Mason’s Spurs have looked very likely to concede at home, and they are worse away. Add to it that this could be MC Kane’s last ever game for the Spuds, this could be a comedy of Spurs proportions. Mou Mama rolled all 3 of his usual seasons into one and has left Spurs desperately clutching for a Europa League place.

Bawa’s Verdict: A nervy draw where both sides lose.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

What was written off to be a horrible season in defence of their title has achieved a decent shape come last day. Mo Salah has proved his enduring class & value once again by pulling along the side when they were found lacking. TAA has come into some serious form as well and will be posing serious questions to Southgate and his Euros selection. Liverpool have not had the best finishes to the season in the years gone by but they will be aware that a few million pounds and the small case of participating in the Champions League next season are in the balance here.

Palace will want to give their manager the perfect send-off. Benteke’s form will be on Klopp’s radar provided the Belgian recovers from what seems to be an ankle injury. Half the world will be hoping that Uncle Woy has the last laugh against his former employers, as he signs off from the footballing world.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to take this one.

Man City vs Everton

Brighton pipping Pep’s boys to the post would count for nothing. Pep would still rest his key players, with focus on the upcoming Champions League final, especially knowing that his opponents (Chelsea) have a lot at stake against Villa. We would also hope Aguero beats the roulette and gets a start. A true legend of the Premier League and Man City.

Everton have only themselves to blame for the position that they are in. They will go back to the drawing board with nothing to show for some exciting exploits in the early half of the season. Hameez’s fitness will continue to be a concern, and Don Carlo will be hoping that they can work on it during this off-season.

Bawa’s Verdict: City parade to go on.

Sheffield United vs Burnley

The Blades’ fans must be thanking their stars or Gods that this season is finally over. Onwards and hopefully upwards from the Championship.

Sean Dyche must be uneasy looking at his side now. In the absence of Pope, the defence is a wobbly mess and looks certain to concede. But Chris Wood and his motley crew of midfielders can’t seem to stop scoring! If you are looking for some upside in your FPL team, Wood could be your go-to man!

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to take home points.

West Ham vs Southampton

Moyes will be proud of the fight that his squad has shown. They have been unlucky with injuries. What could have been, if Antonio and Cresswell hadn’t spent time on the physio’s table is anyone’s guess! West Ham would still look to wrap up that Europa League spot, and maybe sign Lionel Jesse permanently in the summer!

Ralph has had a horrible season with luck, injuries and VAR. Their resurgence after being destroyed by Leicester last season was used as a marker by many, after Bruno and Co. demolished them. However, that was not to be, and the Saints would be glad that they were not in any relegation scrap in a season like this.

Bawa’s Verdict: Hammers to win and secure their Europa League spot.

Wolves vs Man Utd

It’s Uncle Nuno’s farewell game. It’s only a shame that Jimenez won’t be around to bang in a few against a United side that will see some rotation (hopefully!). With the departure of Nuno, the Wolves roster could also see other significant departures, this could be a farewell match for many in Wolves’ colours & of Portuguese nationality.

With a Europa League Final on Wednesday night & with second place wrapped up, Bawa requests that somebody/anybody please tell Ole’ that he can rest Bruno. With Daddy and Diallo upfront, United should have enough fire power to handle the Wolves and end the season in a manic flourish given that United will definitely concede as well.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Draw for Wolves?

FPL Corner

Goalkeepers: Allisson/Martinez/Leno

Defenders: TAA/Cresswell/Dallas

Midfielders: Raphinha/Aubameyang/Salah

Forwards: Antonio/Wood/Bamford

Speaking of Madrid, their star striker, Karim ‘Ferrari’ Benzema has been rewarded for a fine season with his inclusion in the France team for the European Championships. His inclusion has led to a 2400% increase in shirt sales of the French national team. Ferrari Benzema 1 Go Karting Giroud 0!

Robert Lewandowski is now the sole record holder for most goals in a Bundesliga season. Despite Augsburg’s best efforts, Lewa scored his 41st of the season with the last kick of the game to earn him this accolade. The same match will also be remembered as the last for legends like David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez and the manager Hansi Flick in a Bayern shirt.

It’s Football, Bloody Hell!

Greetings to all after what has been a seismic week in our big little world of football!!

Here’s a quick look at some numbers: 4 out of the 6 English teams that were founding members of the European Super League are not assured of a place in next year’s edition of the Champions League by virtue of their current league position. For the first time in around a decade, Juventus are looking at losing out on the qualification as well, with Napoli and Lazio putting serious pressure on the Old Lady of Piedmont. Since AC Milan last played a Champions League tie, Bawa has grown older, wiser, gotten married and had a lovely little Bawa – who would not have experienced the unrivalled joy of league football, because some filthy rich football club owners decided to milk a new cash cow, only so that they can laugh all the way to the bank.

As history will remember it, a 2 billion dollar scheme folded up in 2 days, and for the first time in his life, Petr Cech was in front and not behind the parked bus, and that sent the pack of cards falling ending up with United’s biggest trophy since Fergie left – Ed Woodward’s head!

As the week continues to give, lets look at what Bawa has to say on this week’s fixtures:

Arsenal vs Everton

The story of Lacazette’s career has written itself a chapter in North London as well. Just when it looked like he was getting to be the mean machine that he was at Lyon, Laca pulled up injured. With both Auba and Laca out, Fake Pep has a battle on his hands to finish in the top 10 forget the top 6. But then, the kids are alright & they might just bail him out again.

Gylfi Sigurdsson rolled back the years and scored a stunning strike to hammer the nail on Mou Mama’s fourth stint as a manager in the Premier League. The return of DCL and the lively form of Hameez must have Don Carlo purring. MC Kane put away the two mistakes made by Everton and while their defence is a worry, we may not see a furrowed brow on Don Carlo’s face when they face a youthful Arsenal side.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Klopp and his men stood up admirably to the grey heads at Fenway Park, culminating in a John Henry apology video. Not starting Salah might be a mistake that Klopp would not want to repeat. A visit from the Geordies will always be welcome, Klopp would just be hoping that the Toons leave their mean streak at the This is Anfield sign.

Steve Bruce’s Black and White Army are marching, and there is no stopping them. Not even Lionel Jesse could put a stop to the Looney Toon 😜 . A reinvigorated St Maximin and the return of Wilson could lead the Geordies into the comfort of mid table mediocrity, as they prepare to put themselves in the Saudi shop window this summer.

Bawa’s Verdict: Now that there is no ESL, Liverpool to continue their march towards the UCL spots.

West Ham vs Chelsea (Match of the Week)

Who would have thought that David Moyes’ men are going to be going hammer and tongs to deny one of the entitled lot a place in Europe. They would be hoping that Cresswell returns to provide a semblance of defensive stability, and Antonio is back to share the burden with Lionel J.

If not for Brighton and Dat Boy Welbz’ dogged determination to not score, the Blues would have been the chasing side in this battle for the fourth position. Havertz has been coming into his own in that False 9 position, and the Blues would be looking forward to having Mendy back between the sticks.

Bawa’s Verdict: An exciting draw.

Sheffield United vs Brighton

The biggest news coming out of Bramall Lane is that the owner of Sheffield United, who is an accomplished FPL player himself, has given in and transferred in Lingard. There is nothing much to write home about Aaron Ramsdale and ten other Blades.

This is going to be a classic tale of the entertaining host and the unwilling guest. Sheffield cannot keep a clean sheet, Brighton can’t score. However, Brighton would be hoping to put some more distance between the chasing pack and themselves here.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three point Seagulls.

Wolves vs Burnley

While the ESL lived its short life, the Wolves’ social media team lost no time in claiming what was rightfully theirs – the 2018/19 Premier League title. There’s nothing much to write about the Wolves attack, they’d hope that their defence manages to keep Wood and Vydra out while one of their outfielders manage to sneak one past the Clarets backline.

Burnley have conceded an uncharacteristic 8 goals in their last 3 games. This must have Dyche gobbling earthworms and scratching his head to figure what went wrong. While Pope has been a miss, Peacock-Farrell has not put a foot wrong as such. A pleasant surprise at the other end, the usually goal shy Claret front line have managed to keep the scorer busy in each of their last three games.

Bawa’s Verdict: Boring draw.

Leeds United vs Man Utd.

Leeds’ social media team enacted a classic Bollywood move of taking one concept that worked and killing it by using it on every possible occasion. Unlike Bamford, Llorente didn’t let down the naysayers on the field and scored a vital equaliser. While his struggles in front of goal continue, Bamford turned up in Rashfordesque form at the post match asking questions that put the larger population to shame.

Man United wrecked everyone’s expectations in the return fixture by smashing 6 past Meslier. Ole and the boys must be buoyed by the latest boost of Woodward quitting, and if they had half the enthusiasm of the fans, they should be steamrolling Leeds here. But with Leeds in fine fettle, this one is going to be much closer than one expects.

Bawa’s Verdict: Manchester Reds to take this with great discomfort.

Aston Villa vs West Brom

Villa will be without Cash at right back after his sending off against City. Villa without Grealish look a shadow of the team that was producing some fantastic results. Watkins as usual is the willing runner up front but doesn’t get the required support.

Big Sam would want his team to put one over their Midlands rivals and push towards that 17th spot. His squad seems to have finally bought into his style of play and are the in form team at the moment.

Bawa’s Verdict: A dull draw.

Leicester vs Crystal Palace

Leicester absolutely destroyed the Baggies, pouring cold water on the Big Sam Fan Army which was waking up from a slumber, and at the same time solidifying their charge to a top 4 slot. While Kelechi continued his good form, Foxes should be happy that Vardy was back to what he is doing best – banging in the goals. If I was an Eagles defender, these two aren’t the strike force that I want to be up against.

In case nobody noticed, Palace did not play in the Premier League last time around. Uncle Woy dusted his hat, pulled out the fishing rods and spent some quality time by the river, as the football world went into meltdown. Now that they are up against Kelechi & Co., among other things he’d be praying for mercy.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leicester all the way.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Sanchez/Schmeichel

Defenders: TAA/Dunk/Castagne

Midfielders: Salah/Lionel Jesse/Bruno/Pereira/Greenwood

Forwards: Kelechi/Welbeck

While it hasn’t happened very often, the fact that both City and Liverpool lost in the same weekend shows the unpredictable nature of this season. While City lost to a fantastic performance by their fierce Manchester rivals, Liverpool were not able to find a way past a resolute Fulham side and life ain’t as rosy this season for the champions who have now lost an incredible 6 games in a row at home for the first time in their history. The battle for the top 4 is heating up with Leicester, Chelsea and West Ham carrying on their fine form and the likes of Everton, Spurs pushing hard to gatecrash that party. With intriguing fixtures coming up, here’s Bawa’s take on the weekend matches:

Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Newcastle earned an important point against the Baggies to stay above the relegation spots. While Shelvey and Willock had presentable chances, Bruce will be happy that his side didn’t concede. With 11 games to go, Bruce will hope that fortune favours his troops as without the injured trio of St. Maximin, WIlson, Almiron, they are seriously devoid of quality upfront.

While Jack Grealish continuing to be a big miss for Villa, if their players continue with the crossbar challenge in games, they might lose out on a European spot come the end of the season. Dean Smith will be happy with the defensive side of things but needs his talisman to return and pull the strings in midfield to get positive results.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to slice open the Toon.

Leeds vs Chelsea

Leeds is definitely the most entertaining team in the PL this season but Bielsa would ditch that tag for the most consistent side. Raphinha continues to create chance after chance to see Bamford miss again and again, along with a few other profligate teammates. They did have the ball in the back of the net twice against West Ham in the first 15 minutes which were both ruled out by VAR. Defensively, the lesser said the better, they concede soft goals from set pieces and it’s a real surprise that Bielsa has not been able to plug that gap.

Since Tuchel’s arrival, Chelsea haven’t conceded a goal at home, setting a new PL record. The London club brushed aside teams from Merseyside with ease and come into this fixture full on confidence. Timo Werner again missed a few chances to score against Everton and Bawa feels that it is still a little early to add him to the list of flops to wear the Chelsea blue, upfront. Chelsea look like a mean unit and it will take something special to beat this team.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to continue their winning run under ze German.

Crystal Palace vs West Brom

The Palace side were brought back to reality in the second half against Spurs after Benteke had scored a fantastic equalising header just before half time. Woy usually builds his team around a steady defence but that has not been the case this term. With Zaha back in the fold, the Eagles will hope to regain that cutting edge upfront that has deserted them in the last month.

West Brom are now tougher to beat and have kept three clean sheets and earned six points in their past five games. This upturn in form might just be a little too late in the season. In Diagne they have a solid centre forward who can bully defences and he will be licking his lips for this one.

Bawa’s Verdict: A West Brom win to make it interesting at the bottom.

Everton vs Burnley

Don Carlo looked a frustrated figure on the sidelines against Chelsea. Even though Pickford conceded a penalty he was solely responsible for keeping the score to a respectable 2-0 loss. To cater to Richarlison’s good form and accommodate Sigurdsson, Carlo has played DCL slightly wide and isn’t getting his best in front of goal.

Burnley were lucky to get a point against Arsenal. They were awarded a free goal and were lucky to not concede a penalty at death. How VAR didn’t overturn the decision is still a mystery to most football fans. But one can take nothing away from the commitment shown by Mee, Tarkowski and Pieters by putting their bodies on the line to prevent danger and some instances a sure shot goal.

Bawa’s Verdict: Everton has too much quality to not get a result.

Fulham vs Man City

Fulham’s 1-0 win against the defending champions is probably the biggest upset of the season so far. In fact their performance was so good that they could’ve scored a few more and not conceded even if the game went on for another few hours. On the back of some solid defensive performances, they are level on points with Brighton in 17th and four points behind Burnley in 15th and might just be able to pull off the great escape.

The City juggernaut failed to show up against their bitter Manchester rivals and lost their first game in 21 but snapped back with a 5-2 dismantling of Saints. While going 21 matches unbeaten is a fantastic achievement, Pep will have to remind his team to not take their foot off the gas as stranger things have happened in football. Bawa fully expects City to score a few in this one despite Fulham’s resolute defence.

Bawa’s Verdict: The City juggernaut to destroy another London team.

Southampton vs Brighton

Despite an injury to their main man, Danny Ings, Saints outclassed Sheffield who seem to already be planning for their lives in the Championship. Hasenhüttl must be happy with the clean sheet and would have hoped that his team build on that performance. And then came City, where after a brief moment of hope, RR Mahrez and KDB absolutely destroyed the Saints. Ralph will have to rebuild after yet another defeat to a Manchester club.

Brighton finally managed to score and take the lead against Leicester but eventually succumbed to a 2-1 loss courtesy to a mistake by Sanchez. Brighton are level on points with Fulham now and cannot afford any slip ups, in other words, they need to score goals.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to begin their rebuilding.

Leicester vs Sheffield

The Foxes are in such a good vein of form that no matter the missing personnel or team in front, they find a way to get a result in their favour. Despite a massive injury list they were able to come from behind to beat Brighton and stay in the top 4 at the moment.

The Blades seem to have accepted their fate of getting relegated this season as the team doesn’t seem to be even putting in the hard yards expected of them. Wilder looks like a dejected man on the touchline and if rumours are to be believed looks all set to be relieved of his duties at Bramall Lane.

Credit: @BBCSport (Twitter)

Bawa’s Verdict: Foxes to stay in the top 4 after another easy win.

Arsenal vs Spurs (Match of the Week)

It seems that this Arsenal team just loves to shoot themselves in the foot. They were in control of the game against Burnley when Xhaka decided to gift Wood a present. While Arteta will moan about a nailed on penalty not being awarded, his team needs to take their chances when they have their tails up.

Spurs are playing some fantastic attacking football contrary to what people might have to say. Kane, Bale and Son are ripping teams apart with their speed and guile and Mou Mama’s side come into this game as favourites.

Bawa’s Verdict: A moment of brilliance to settle this.

United vs West Ham

An Ole masterclass got the better of his bald Manchester counterpart. United deserved the three points and they took full advantage of the chances awarded to them while keeping the City game changers at bay. Luke Shaw scored a brilliant goal. It looks like he is finally realising his true potential. Ole will hope that long may it continue.

West Ham continue to keep churning out wins and challenge for the top four. Jesse Lingard has been a massive signing for the Hammers but will miss the game as he can’t play against his parent club. Moyes will hope that Antonio can bully the United defenders to submission and come away with a result from Old Trafford.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw.

Wolves vs Liverpool

Wolves were lucky to come away from Villa with a point on the balance of play while they themselves had a chance or two. Pedro Neto looks like the only player that can influence the proceedings upfront as the likes of Traore and Willian Jose struggle to impose themselves on games.

Jurgen Klopp and his team looks like a ghost of their former selves. Liverpool have astonishingly lost six games on the bounce at home and have seemed to lost their way. With the quality in their squad, it is just a matter of time that they start clicking but a little soul searching is important if they are to salvage any pride this season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to return to winning ways.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeeper: Ederson/Martinez/Schmeichel

Defenders: Cancelo/Shaw/Castagne

Midfielders: Bruno/Bale/Mahrez

Forwards: Kane/Watkins

Leagues of Yonder:

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were dumped out of the Champions League by some fantastic performances by PSG and FC Porto respectively. But Bawa is really disappointed with journalists failing to pose a single question to Sérgio Conceição, the Porto manager, after what might be his biggest victory. Come on lads, show some respect!

While we are all truly blessed to have lived in the Ronaldo-Messi era of football, the future seems to promise a lot. Gen-Next led by Haäland and Mbappe seems to have absolutely no chill, as they race to landmarks like nobody’s business.

No Room for Racism

Featured

With the games coming thick and fast, Bawa feels bad for the players who are being asked to strain every last sinew to get results for their respective clubs. Oh the glorious life of a professional footballer!

And if this wasn’t enough so called football fans hiding behind screens on social media, hurl vile and racist abuse towards footballers, who, lest we forget are doing their job and are allowed to have a bad day/days at the office. This is a reprehensible act and as the old adage goes “actions speak louder than words” so Mr. Masters and administrators of the game need to take this more seriously and find ways to catch and punish such cowards.

On a separate note, Bawa got a majority of the predictions right last week (for a change). An excited Bawa now takes a look at the matches this weekend.

Everton vs Newcastle

James returned to action for the Everton blue with a worldie that should’ve been enough to secure the 3 points but another mistake from Jordan Pickford left them with a point instead. Maybe its time Carlo relegated Englands #1 to the bench as he doesn’t instil confidence between the sticks at the moment.

After a poor first half, Newcastle woke up from their slumber to equalise ten minutes into the second half but as expected allowed Leeds back in to win the game despite missing a fair few chances themselves. Bawa is ready to wager $5 that Steve Bruce might be the next managerial casualty as it doesn’t look pretty for the Toon.

Bawa’s Verdict: Everton to pile on the misery.

Crystal Palace vs Wolves

Despite Zaha scoring in the 3rd minute, Palace were all over the place and were lucky that Antonio didn’t take chances. While Zaha is their talisman, others need to step up if the Eagles want to get back to winning ways.

As expected Wolves defended for their lives against a new look Chelsea under Tuchel. Nuno shocked the football community by starting Podence who was ruled out of the game as per Nuno’s presser. Also, we got to see Willian Jose for the first time but his most important contribution came defensively when he headed a goal bound effort in the dying seconds of the game.

Bawa’s Verdict: A hard fought win for Wolves.

Man City vs Sheffield Utd

City didn’t miss their creative force in KDB and scored 4 in the first half itself. We all know the quality in that squad but they have also been getting the rub of the green in terms of some really dubious refereeing decisions. Two offside calls have gone in their favour and it seems there is a “Sheikh” up at the VAR Hub at Stockley Park.

Sheffield shocked the world by beating the in form Manchester United at Old Trafford making the battle at the top and bottom, very interesting. Now that they have tasted some form, can the Blades go and cause another upset in Manchester?

Bawa’s Verdict: City to win big.

West Brom vs Fulham

Big Sam was rightly cheesed off with the decision that allowed Cancelo’s goal to stand but if he is honest the writing was on the wall. Another drubbing doesn’t help as the Baggies have the worst defensive record in the league, something one doesn’t usually associate with Big Sam’s teams. They are in desperate need of a positive result and this game against a fellow relegation battler couldn’t come at a better time.

Fulham were really lucky to come away with a point from Brighton thanks to an inspired Areola and a Seagulls attack that can do everything apart from putting the ball in the net. This is a must win game for Fulham as it could open up a 5 points gap with West Brom with a game in hand.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Fulham win.

Arsenal vs Man Utd

Arsenal are slowly but surely picking up form and come into this game unbeaten in 6 PL matches since Christmas. Arteta knows the importance of continuing this run and will need his team to remain disciplined against a really talented and wounded United side. This game might come too early for their latest recruit, Martin Ødegaard, their new #11.

Bawa has no words for United’s loss to Sheffield and still thinks it was a nightmare (cue 1:45 am kick off). The team is in such good form that this result will be hard to take. Despite Pogba’s re-emergence, there is too much pressure on Bruno to deliver every game which is humanly not possible. Tuanzebe had an evening to forget and probably won’t get another start anytime soon.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Southampton vs Aston Villa

Saints played well against Arsenal despite going in without their first choice full backs. Danny Ings and Che Adams are relentless and pose a constant threat supported by JWP, Armstrong and Walcott. The Huttl will be hoping for a better performance from McCarthy who looked a little iffy in goal.

Dean Smith must be wondering how his team managed to lose to Burnley despite having the better chances and possession. Mings and Konsa should hang their heads in shame for a poor second half. This game might come too soon for Morgan Sanson, who they’ve signed from Marseille for £16m, to boost their midfield.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to win this one.

Chelsea vs Burnley

Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge was a good one as his team dominated the possession stats with 820 completed passes. While many stalwarts in the game like Uncle ‘Arry aren’t convinced of his managerial credentials, Tuchel has a back to the walls job with a trigger happy boss and an underperforming squad. Their inability to break the deadlock will come as a concern but with only one training session under a new manager, its a positive start. It will be interesting to see how Ze Germans and Pulisic perform under his tutelage. This game against an in form Burnley couldn’t come at a worse time though.

Sean Dyche and his team continue to pull off a miracles, this time with a 3-2 comeback. Their win against an in form Villa who looked like scoring every time they came forward is a credit to their defence and the inspired Nick Pope. It is mind boggling how this lad isn’t England’s #1. Dwight McNeil also had a great game with a goal and an assist and Ginger Mourinho will hope that McNeil can now kick on and deliver the goods on a regular basis.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another draw for Chelsea.

Leicester vs Leeds United

This Leicester team just doesn’t know when its beat. Brendan Rodgers has assembled a fantastic squad and is getting the best out of talented players that had lost their way. Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Justin and Fofana are showing that its hunger & talent and not age that makes a good footballer.

Leeds were lucky to come away with the 3 points from Tyneside. Bamford has suddenly lost his mojo and Bielsa needs the likes of Rodrigo to step up. Their all out attacking philosophy is great to watch but defensively Leeds make too many costly mistakes as was the case with Almiron’s goal.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

West Ham vs Liverpool

At the beginning of the season who would’ve thought that West Ham will be 4th after 20 games. We may not all like David Moyes but he knows what he is doing when the expectations are low and is the main man at a mid table club. For those who didn’t watch the game, Michail Antonio could’ve had a hat-trick if he had taken the gilt edged chances presented to him. To add to this misfortune, he also lost an assist to Cresswell, further pissing off his FPL owners.

After their win at Spurs, an excited Klopp exclaimed “That was us. It was who we are.” Well Liverpool might have started scoring goals again but the serious injury to Matip means that they will have to bring in a defender this window cue Shkodran Mustafi to Liverpool rumours 😉. With both Firmino and Mane scoring, Klopp will hope that Salah can get his name on the scoresheet as well.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw, further adding to Klopp’s annoyance.

Brighton vs Spurs

Brighton were again impressive against Fulham but last the cutting edge in front of goal. These draws despite controlling games won’t do them any good come the end of the season if they get relegated and that remains a possibility.

Mou Mama must be extremely disappointed with his team. Hugo Loris and Joe Rodon had a part to play in all the goals conceded which is unusual for a Mourinho team. Spurs were set up on the counter but weren’t able to make the final telling pass to Son or Kane who limped off the field at half time and didn’t return in the second half.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to win.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Stones/Cancelo

Midfielders: Son/Soucek/James

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

No matter how hard we try we just can’t keep Zlatan away from our posts. This time, the ex. Man Utd. strikers clashed in the Milan derby. Zlatan might have won the war of the words but Lukaku had the last laugh as after Zlatan’s sending off, Inter won the match, 2-1, in stoppage time.

It will be extremely disappointing if the news of CR7 breaking coronavirus protocols rules is true as someone who has contracted and recovered from the deadly virus should know better.

KICK IT OUT

Featured

It’s 2020 and its shameful to see that a lot of us still can’t see past one’s skin colour, sexual preferences or life choices. Two incidents took place in the past week that mar the so called “beautiful game”; Millwall fans booing players for taking a knee for the Black Lives Matter movement and a UEFA Match Official, yes you read it correctly, a Romanian fourth official, allegedly racially abusing the assistant coach of İstanbul Başakşehir in their UCL match against PSG. THIS SIMPLY CANNOT BE TOLERATED!

And if all this wasn’t enough, in typical 2020 fashion, Spurs with a reinvigorated Mou Mama head into this game week top of the league, now who would’ve thought that? A crucial week for Manchester United started off disastrously as RB Leipzig relegated them to the Europa League thanks to Ole’s masterplan of playing a back seven. An opportunity to host their noisy neighbours couldn’t come at a better worse time for Ole to save some face.

Leeds vs West Ham

Leeds couldn’t have started off on a better note with Bamford taking his chance against an in form Chelsea. Bawa simply loves Bielsa because unlike other managers he doesn’t keep his fans or the opposition guessing.

David Moyes was left seething with the decision which kickstarted the United comeback. West Ham were unlucky to not come away with at least a point. Antonio might sit this one out too and will be a big miss upfront.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to win this one.

Wolves vs Aston Villa

Despite a good start against the defending champions, an uncharacteristic mistake from Captain Coady started the Liverpool rout. Missing a striker of the ilk of Jimenez will be massive but Nuno will be hoping that the tricky Podence, the pacy Neto and the massive unit of Adama Traore can do the job upfront.

Villa had a break last week and will be hoping to have Barkley back in the fold soon if not quite for this game. Grealish has been in great form and his team will go into this game as the favourites to come away with the three points.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to win comfortably.

Newcastle vs West Brom

Newcastle had the week off due to the COVID-19 outbreak in their training ground at Darsley Park. Hat tip to Steve Bruce in respecting the privacy of his players and refusing to name everyone who has been ruled out of the upcoming fixture. Brucey has however stated that they have enough fit players to put out a XI against the Baggies.

West Brom lost their most influential creative outlet in Pereira with a silly red card. If the lack of points on the table was a worry, then the goals conceded column will only add to that.

Bawa’s Verdict: Any Newcastle XI to win this one at home.

Man Utd vs Man City (Match of the Week)

Inspired/forced halftime substitutions of bringing on Bruno and Rashford completely changed the outcome of the last match against the Hammers but more importantly the mid-week loss to Leipzig in the Champions League will again put the focus back on Ole and his managerial aptitude at this level. Typically, this United manages to get a result the moment their manager’s neck is on the line but with injuries to Martial and Cavani and the untimely announcement made by Pogba’s agent, Ole will have his task cut out in this Manchester derby.

A Sterling goal against Fulham would’ve brought some relief to Pep as he offers a cutting edge to the City attack that Torres/Silva haven’t been able to replicate. Since their rebirth, City haven’t gone into this fixture chasing United often. However, Pep and his City team have hit form in the last 2-3 matches and will come to Old Trafford with a renewed confidence in the hope of inflicting more pain on Ole and his boys.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to get one over their city rivals.

Everton vs Chelsea

Carlo must be extremely frustrated with his leaky defense and if it wasn’t for some point blank saves from Pickford they could’ve lost this one too. Going forward though, DCL has been a revelation this season and could be in the run for the golden boot.

Despite going behind early, Chelsea took the game to Leeds and responded in fine fashion. Ziyech’s injury will be worrying but they have a more than able replacement in Havertz/Pulisic. If Werner can start taking his chances, there will be no catching the Blues this season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine Chelsea win.

Southampton vs Sheffield

Saints talisman, Danny Ings, marked his return with a goal taking them to fifth in the table. Ralph Hasenhüttl has completely rejuvenated this Saints team and they play some eye catching football.

When the team is in a rut, costly mistakes happen like the one in injury time against the Foxes. Chris Wilder seems like a likeable guy but could be the first managerial casualty if he doesn’t get a positive result soon.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to canter to a victory.

Crystal Palace vs Spurs

Palace turned on the style in the second half and took full advantage of the extra man with Zaha running the show. Benteke bagged a brace and Bawa can’t remember when the Belgian did that last.

Mou Mama and his men put up a masterclass against their North London rivals. The Kane and Son partnership continues to flourish and will trouble every defence in the PL. Defensively, Spurs haven’t conceded a goal in their last three games despite playing against City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to remain top of the table after this one.

Fulham vs Liverpool

Fulham put up a brave performance against City but didn’t create a chance of significance and that must worry Parker. Their run of fixtures doesn’t get any easier and they will need to play a lot better if they want to compete against the champions.

Liverpool put up a performance for their fans to be proud of after being allowed back for the first time at Anfield since February. The front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino is just too good and if they don’t get you then there is the in form Jota who will come on and do the business.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to continue their winning form.

Arsenal vs Burnley

Mikel Arteta continues to baffle by insisting on crossing the ball to strikers who aren’t really known for their aerial prowess. The last few games, Arsenal has led possession stats which counts for zilch but concede plenty on the counter. One can’t even call them unlucky as they play terribly boring and predictable football without a Plan B.

Burnley played well against Everton and could’ve won the game if they took their chances. In the battle of the PL strugglers, Sean Dyche will make it extremely difficult for the Gunners to break his team down. Both teams would be hoping to turn a corner in this fixture, because if not now, then when?

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to grind to a victory.

Leicester vs Brighton

Jamie Vardy’s two footed assault on the corner flag after his injury time winner was the highlight of this game. The Foxes are grinding out results and this puts them in a great position to cash in when their players return from injury during the hectic festive schedule.

Brighton must have some bad karma on their books as they again lost points in a game that they played well in. It is great to see Danny Welbeck get a run of games injury free and his impact on this team is evident.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Leicester win.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeeper: McCarthy/Lloris/Kelleher

Defenders: Robertson/Cresswell/Reguilon

Midfielders: Salah/KDB/Son/JWP

Strikers: Kane/Vardy/Ings

Frustrations!!

Featured

VAR continues to be the talk of the town and is making the players, pundits and more importantly us fans lose interest in the beautiful game. How the richest league in the world cannot implement technology makes us really wonder what is going on in the VAR Hub at Stockley Park 😉

With Villa vs Newcastle postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak at St. James Park perhaps in part and thanks to the good folk in the North East who insist on attending rave parties 3 times a week during a pandemic; Bawa dives straight into the predictions for the week.

Burnley vs Everton

Burnley got thrashed by City and were lucky not to concede a lot more. Peacock-Farrell had a debut to forget but wasn’t really helped by the mistakes made by his defense which is very uncharacteristic of a Sean Dyche team. The Clarets will be hoping that their lord and saviour, Pope is back in goal to add solidity to their much needed defense but its the men upfront that need to do the business if they want to come away with some points this week.

Everton did well to go toe to toe against the relentless Leeds. The threat of Richarlison and Rodriguez was handled well despite their goals being ruled out for offside, but DCL not getting a sniff at goal must be a worry for Don Carlo. However, it’s the Everton defense that needs to sort itself out pronto as they have not kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season. This unwanted record needs to end if Everton harbour any realistic ambitions to challenge for the European spots come the end of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A solitary goal should be enough for an Everton victory.

Man City vs Fulham

As expected City put five past a hapless Burnley without even breaking a sweat. It’s too bad that Pep can play the Clarets only twice a season. With Aguero & Jesus returning to fitness and KDB in ominous form expect another thrashing if City attackers take their chances unlike their goalless draw against Porto midweek.

Fulham finally got past their penalty hoodoo and beat the in form Leicester. This fixture couldn’t come at a worse time for Scott Parker who must be hoping for this team to build on a good result. Lookman and Loftus Cheek will need to be at their clinical best if they want to cause City any trouble.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to win comfortably.

West Ham vs Manchester Utd

West Ham’s resurgence this season has been remarkable. After losing their first two games of the season, the Hammers currently sit 5th on the table. In Souček, David Moyes has found his midfield lynchpin and will be hoping that the Czech can inspire the Irons to get one over his previous employers.

Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani inspired a remarkable comeback against the in form Southampton. Winning in Fergie time brought back memories of the Utd of old and will give the team immense confidence going into another tricky fixture post the midweek blip against PSG.

Bawa’s Verdict: The Chosen One to exact revenge.

Chelsea vs Leeds

Chelsea played well against an in form Spurs and should have taken the three points right at the end if Giroud hadn’t spurned at great opportunity. Their defense is one of the strongest in the league on current form and if Frank can figure out his offensive options from the plethora of attackers at his disposal, this Chelsea team will be a tough nut to crack.

Leeds were rewarded for yet another relentless performance with three points against Everton. There was a combined 39 shots in the game with Raphinha’s winner being the 35th one. Bielsa will be hoping that his team finds their shooting boots sooner rather than later if they are to trouble Chelsea.

Bawa’s Verdict: An exciting draw.

West Brom vs Crystal Palace

West Brom winning their first game will give Bilic’s men some much needed relief. They conceded enough opportunities but it was Sam Johnstone who came to their rescue. Matheus Pereira created nine chances against Sheffield, the most created by a player this season and has been their best player so far.

Palace must consider themselves extremely unlucky for conceding two late goals in their loss to an injury hit Newcastle. With Zaha in contention to make his comeback, Roy must be licking his lips to see his front men in full flow.

Bawa’s Verdict: West Brom to take this one.

Sheffield vs Leicester

Chris Wilder will be hoping that his team can put some points on the board and shut Jurgen Klopp up. Sheffield is the only team in the PL yet to keep a clean sheet and this coincides with the fact that Adam Ramsdale has not been able to replace Dean Henderson and his heroics between the sticks.

From a chance of going top two weeks ago to currently sit fourth must seems like deja vu for Brendan Rodgers. With news of Ricardo, Sonyuncu and Ndidi fit and raring to go, the Foxes will pose a different threat in the upcoming matches.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leicester to return to winning ways.

Spurs vs Arsenal (Match of the Week)

Mou Mama as always got his tactics spot on against Chelsea. Only Jose knows how he thought his side should’ve won but thats the speciality of the man. Kane although a injury doubt *coughs* always scores against Arsenal and one wouldn’t bet against him to do the same even if he is half fit or on one leg. Spurs go into this North London Derby with immense confidence and at the top of the table for the very first time since the inception of the PL.

Mikel Arteta must be wondering what has gone wrong, he was considered a Messiah, winning 2 trophies in a short period and a few months later, there are calls for his sacking. Even though Arsenal scored a goal from open play, the way Wolves sliced the team apart without Raul Jimenez is worrisome. Roy Keane says that Arsenal have enough to stay up and stave off relegation and we believe him.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to add to Arteta’s misery and win this one.

Liverpool vs Wolves

The champions have suffered horrible luck with injuries to key players (Alisson this week) but Klopp moaning every week about one thing or the other is getting rather annoying. Bawa also questions the thinking behind not making the allotted 5 substitutions in the UCL. Most successful teams in the past have had to bear the brunt of fixture pile up and injuries and should be able to handle the rigours of UCL, PL and domestic cup competitions. So come on Jurgen, stop being a drama queen!!

Despite the horrific injury to Raul Jimenez at the start, Wolves turned up and beat Arsenal with a gritty yet classy performance. They scored two goals in the first half which is a rarity for this team and held on without conceding any real chance to Auba & Co.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to grind out another win.

Brighton vs Southampton

Brighton while a tad bit lucky, fully deserved a point against the mighty Liverpool. Neal Maupay had a shocker and came off injured in the first half itself after missing a penalty. Brighton are playing some tidy football and the likes of Trossard and Groß will produce enough chances for Welbeck to bang in a few if he remains injury free.

Ralph Hasenhüttl must be extremely disappointed after his teams performance in the second half against Man Utd. The Saints are still the in form team and look like scoring every time they are in the oppositions half.

Bawa’s Verdict: A fighting win for the Saints.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeeper: Ederson/Mendy

Defenders: Mendy/Cresswell

Midfielders: Salah/Jota/Fernandes/KDB

Strikers: Jesus/Kane/Vardy

Are we missing the“Big Picture”?

Welcome back lads! Thank fucking goodness the international break is over and the majority of the meaningless matches played can be firmly consigned to the dustbin!

While the top leagues are trying their best to follow strict protocols and maintain life within the bubble, the decision to play international matches (Nations League) seems daft e.g. 5 Irish players were stood down from their match against Wales after one player tested positive with the remaining four deemed to have come in close contact. So it begs the question of the existence of the Nations League! Lots of managers have bemoaned its existence and most recently Le Prof (Chief of Global Football Development at FIFA) was also critical of this unnecessary tournament (if you have figured how the four tiers work, show off in the comments and buy yourself 🍺for having wasted your precious time figuring it out!).

With some players returning to their respective teams as late as Thursday, Bawa suggests that we wait till the last moment to choose our FPL teams. As for match day squads it will be tough for teams to manage player welfare while the threat of contracting the virus still looms large in addition to injuries and fatigue.

Everton vs Liverpool (Match of the Week)

While the Merseyside derby has lost its bite in the recent years, this one should be a tasty affair. Having been thrashed by Villa, Liverpool would want to right their wrongs by beating their city rivals who currently sit pretty at the top of the table. With DCL scoring on his England debut and Sigurdsson bagging a brace against Romania, Everton supporters must be licking their lips with the current form of their players. The only concern is James Rodriguez and Yerry Mina’s availability as they are not expected to be back from international commitments for Colombia before Thursday.

Klopp’s preparation for this game have been dealt a blow with the news of Naby Keita replacing Mane and Thiago (who are rumoured to be in contention to play a part this weekend) in Liverpool’s COVID-19 isolation ward. Due to his Mustafiesque performance against Villa, Bawa fully expects Joe Gomez to be replaced by Fabinho in defence providing Everton a chance to continue their unbeaten run.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw – the fan in Bawa would prefer something like the one where Phil Jagielka’s right foot did all the talking.

Chelsea vs Southampton

Frank surprised everyone by benching Mason Mount against the hapless Crystal Palace. While Chelsea won comfortably thanks to two well taken penalties by Jorginho, a clean sheet for Mendy and a goal on debut for Chilwell were the icing on the cake. With the expected returns of Ziyech and Pulisic, the PL better be ready (or maybe not with the rumoured injury to Chilwell/Mendy!)

The Saints secured the loan signing of Theo Walcott and that completed a good transfer window for Hasenhuttl. Southampton winning games without Ings on the score sheet bodes well for them but Bawa believes that Chelsea will prove to be too strong if the Saints decide to play a high defensive line.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to win at the Bridge!

Man City vs Arsenal

Man City were outplayed by Leeds and this rarely happens under Pep. Leeds were unlucky not to come away with the 3 points but this allows Pep and his team to take out their frustrations against his protégé. Aguero has started training but if Pep is to be believed (IF) – he will be slowly re-introduced to the fray. With KDB ruled out, Pep drew some inspiration from Super V (Virat Kohli) over the international break and might throw in a few #BenStokes during the game.

Securing Partey on deadline day was a big move for Arsenal. This match might come too soon for his involvement but under Arteta, the free flowing Arsenal of the old is slowly being replaced by a more pragmatic approach, based on the opposition. Luckily, Tierney, who has quickly become an integral part of Arsenal’s defence should be allowed to play after there were rumours that he would have to observe 14 days self isolation due to coming in close contact with Stuart Armstrong who tested positive. This could make a huge difference as the thought of Mahrez vs. Kolasinac was causing nightmares to all Arsenal fans.

Will The Master come out on Top? Or will the Protégé Prevail?

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw written all over it….Arsenal could potentially cause an upset!

Newcastle vs Man Utd

Steve Bruce was extremely happy with his team’s performance against Burnley. Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser have settled in well and in Saint-Maximin (who also happens to have signed a contract extension), they possess a tricky offensive threat and should have a right crack at this United defence.

Ole and his team must be looking for a response after that embarrassing defeat against Spurs but it is really difficult to see where inspiration will come from. Donny has been patient so far and this would be a good time to give him his full debut in the league. As things stand, new signings, Telles and Cavani might not be afforded the time to settle into a new team/league and will have to hit the ground running if Ole finally takes the ballsy (but correct) decision of dropping the underperforming Pogba, Maguire and Shaw. With matches against PSG, Chelsea, Leipzig, Arsenal, Istanbul and Everton in the next month, all one can do is #PrayForOle .

Bawa’s Verdict: The only United that might be happy after the game will probably be the team from Tyneside.

Sheffield Utd vs Fulham

The battle of the bottom two, pointless teams! With both teams making deadline day signings, the jury will still be out on whether Wilder can get something ‘Brew’ing at Bramall Lane or if Loftus-Cheek will join the list of successful Chelsea loanees a’la Lukaku and Batshuayi and kickstart his career. Fulham’s preparation for the weekend has unexpected taken a twist like Andersen’s ankle.

It’s going to be a tough season for both these teams and it will be interesting to see if Sheffield can withstand the second season syndrome and if Fulham’s defence is ready to handle the rigours of the Premier League.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three points to the Blades.

Crystal Palace vs Brighton

In one of the more peculiar rivalries or the A23 derby, comes a match up of the oldest vs. one of the youngest managers in the PL. Crystal Palace didn’t turn up against Chelsea conceding two soft penalties through school boy errors at the back. With a relatively thin squad it was surprising to see Woy not dip into the market on deadline day and signing Nathaniel Clyne on a short term deal. By the looks of it, Bawa believes that this is going to be a long season for the Eagles. However, with PVA declaring that ‘he’s back’ on Twitter, all you FPL Mitchell fanboys better start praying.

Despite some good performances, three losses in four doesn’t read well if you are a Brighton fan. Maupay, Trossard, Connolly will cause problems upfront but are they clinical enough to score 15-20 goals between them is the question. A team that is supposed to be defensively well organised has conceded ten goals already. While this won’t be a goalfest, one goal should be enough for a result.

Bawa’s Verdict: Crystal Palace to continue their winning form at home.

Spurs vs West Ham

Mou Mama sprung a surprise by starting Son, who in the able company of MC Kane (in case you are wondering check out – Bale’d out), tore United a new one! Spurs had a fantastic transfer window and seem capable of scoring 3-4 goals every time they go out to play.

Two games without Moyes on the sidelines and two unlikely wins for West Ham. The shrewd signing of the tricky Algerian winger, Saïd Benrahma, might turn out to be a masterstroke for West Ham if he manages to successfully pass his medical. While Antonio and Bowen are in inspired form, Bawa fully expects Spurs to Hammer the Irons back to reality in this London derby.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to win.

Leicester vs Aston Villa

The entire Leicester defence was bullied and tormented by Antonio and Bowen. While they have added Wesley Fofana to their ranks, might be too much to expect of a youngster to slot straight into the backline of a Champions League spot chasing team. The Foxes will be expected to bounce back with Vardy & Gang going full pelt at the King Power.

On the other hand, Villa come into this match full of confidence after taking the champions to the cleaners! Their performance was so good that it seemed that one of Grealish/Watkins/Barkley would score every time they attacked the Liverpool defence. While the international break might have come at the worst time for Villa, Bawa will keep an eye out on this team as he expects them to be the surprise of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to win and probably remain the only unbeaten team at the end of this match week.

West Brom vs Burnley

The less said about West Brom, the better. One can’t fault the effort that Bilic and his men put out week after week but a lack of quality cannot always be overcome by grit and tenacity. Bawa hopes that the signing of Karlan Grant can help the Baggies score a few and cause some trouble to PL oppositions.

Only time will tell if grumpy old Sean Dyche will get grumpier as the season ends. Burnley didn’t spend a dollar in the transfer window and Dyche has gone on record slating the management for not investing in the squad. Some might still say that holding on to Pope, Tarkowski and Mee and getting McNeil to extend his contract could be the biggest signings that the Clarets could have made in this window.

Not so fun fact: Don’t bother wasting time watching this game unless you are a Claret or a Baggie.

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to use their experience and wrestle to a win at the Hawthorns.

Leeds vs Wolves

Leeds United! What a team! Bawa is sure that all the doubters are now seeing the hype around Bielsa. His Leeds team outplayed Pep’s City and that is no easy ask.

While Nuno’s men got back to winning ways, it was another uninspiring performance. Their heavy reliance on Jimenez for goals is something they will look into. If Podence and Traore can become consistent, Wolves will again start delivering and push for Europe.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw!

The FPL Corner: Ones to watch

Goalkeeper: Martinez/Kepa

Defender: Castagne/Baldock

Midfielders: Salah/Grealish/Son

Strikers: DCL/Jimenez/MC Kane

From the Leagues of Yonder…..

Let us start on a positive note with the news that Marcus Rashford was awarded an MBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his efforts to secure free meals for vulnerable children during the coronavirus pandemic. Congratulations @MarcusRashford

Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive for Covid-19 in what is definitely the highest profile case in the football world, and the laboratory was stunned to find this:

Staying with CR7, Italian judges awarded Juventus a 3-0 victory over Napoli as the Neapolitans failed to travel to Turin to play their match due to COVID-19 outbreak. If this was not enough, Napoli have been docked a point as well. Bawa is sure, CR7 is claiming all the 3 goals to add to his tally this season. And Napoli have ofcourse appealed this decision.

Project Big Picture: Rick Parry (Chairman, EFL) along with John Henry (Owner, Liverpool) and Joel Glazer (Chairman, Manchester United) have come up with a plan to shakeup English football. Luckily, better sense prevailed and the PL and the 20 clubs unanimously rejected this monstrosity of a plan. Still, if you’d like a brief summary, Bawa lists down the key points:

  • Premier League would be reduced from 20 to 18 teams (what the actual f&#k!)
  • Current, one-club one-vote rule would be abolished as would the 14 of the 20 teams agreeing to pass a policy/resolution (Much wow, they need to share what they’re smoking!)
  • Special status to the nine longest serving teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City (how did they get in here?), Southampton, Tottenham, West Ham) with only six of the nine required to vote to make a major change
  • League Cup and Community Shield to be scrapped (Boo Freaking Hoo!)
  • £250M payment to EFL clubs in addition to £100M to the Football Association to help with the COVID-19 crisis
  • Fan charter including £20 away ticket price cap, subsidised away travel with a focus on return to safe standing and at least 3,000 (eight percent of capacity) for away allocation
  • Parachute payments which relegated teams receive over three years to be removed
