The End is Nigh..

Featured

This season has been relentless with matches coming thick and fast and some fans might be happy to see the end of it! With promotion, relegation and trophies for year already accounted for, the only thing left is qualification for Europe. Mathematically 3-4 teams are in the mix for the Champions League but realistically its between Leicester, Chelsea & Liverpool for the two spots up for grabs.

Leicester winning the FA Cup in front of fans was such a wonderful sight and Bawa hopes that this is the first step towards normalcy as the fans play the biggest part in making football the “beautiful game”.

Talking about football during unprecedented times, there have been some fantastic achievements in the last year, some of which make it to the Leagues of Yonder section of Bawa Says 😜, so do scroll to bottom of this post and take a look for yourselves. But before you do that, take a look at this week’s predictions, Bawa takes as much responsibility for these as some governments do for the mismanagement of the pandemic:

Man Utd. vs Fulham

After a hellish week, Ole and his squad can focus on the remaining games in the PL as a build up to their match against Villarreal in the Europa League Final. Ole will hope that Harry Maguire can recover in time as despite his faults, this United team is better with him in it. On the attacking front, the form of Bruno, Greenwood and Cavani makes them favourites for any game, especially this one.

It’s not easy being relegated with three games to go, but the Cottagers put up another toothless performance against the Saints. The full debut and goal for Carvalho will come as a boost for Scott Parker who will have to take one hard look at his players as he prepares for life in the Championship.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Easy United Win.

Southampton vs Leeds

Saints controlled the game against a demoralised Fulham and a first goal for Tella shows that their academy is still one of the best in the country. If he had a fully fit squad at his disposal, this Saints team definitely would have finished in the top half with the likes of Ings, JWP and Vestergaard forming a solid spine.

Leeds blew away Burnley in a clinical 20 minute spell in the second half with Rodrigo scoring a sublime double. If Bielsa can hold on to these players and add a little more quality in the summer, Leeds could be competing for a top 6 finish next season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Leeds win to push for a top half finish.

Brighton vs Man City

The Seagulls still haven’t won a game in the PL in which their talismanic captain, Lewis Dunk hasn’t played. Dunk was a big miss against West Ham and will miss the game against City also due to suspension. It’s good to see Dat Boy Welbz doing the business upfront and Potter will hope to have him fit and firing for next season if they want to push for a higher place in the table.

While the scoreline might suggest a thriller, City were pretty comfortable in their 4-3 win at St. James Park. Pep outdid himself and played Scott Carson in goal, a full 10 years after his previous start in the PL. Ferran Torres was the hero with a fantastic hattrick and fans can expect a similar team and result against Brighton.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to continue their victory parade.

Chelsea vs Leicester

In a repeat of the FA Cup Final, these two clubs go at each other in less than 72 hours. Tuchel was critical of VAR missing the handball in the build-up to Leicesters goal on Saturday but he is clutching at straws there. There is a possibility that Chelsea’s season could go from a successful one to a bad one if they lose out on the top 4 and the Champions League final.

With the wind in their sails after their narrow triumph in the FA Cup Final, Rodgers will egg on his players to beat Chelsea and guarantee their place in the top 4. Vardy & Co. will have to be at their ruthless best if they are to penetrate this stingy Chelsea defense again. Without Evans at the back, they lose a cool head but Fofana and Soyuncu should be able to handle another rearguard effort.

Bawa’s Verdict: A nervous draw.

Everton vs Wolves

17 year old Dan Jebbison poured cold water on the Toffee’s European hopes in a game where Sheffield United looked more hungry for points than Everton. This also marked their 9th defeat at Goodison Park this season, making it their worst home season in PL history. All this while having a full strength side playing the game, sometimes you just can’t get it right!

A Hojberg goal and assist condemned Wolves to another pointless defeat. This went exactly as Bawa predicted, as MC led an assault on the only notable part of the Wolves’ squad – their defence and managed to breach it twice. Uncle Nuno has some soul searching to do, as without Jimenez, this season has been a horror show up front for them.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Everton win at Goodison for the fans.

Newcastle vs Sheffield United

The Geordies flew out of the blocks and were leading 3-2 before City tightened the screws. Without Wilson their attack gave a good account of themselves and Bruce will be happy to see Joelinton get on the scoresheet. The loan signing of Willock has been a masterstroke in an otherwise poor season. Bruce will relish the chance to secure two wins in the last two games against already relegated opponents.

There has been nothing much to write home about the Blades for a while; they did put in a good performance against Everton, but it has come around 30 games too late. The only good thing for Blades fans is that some players are still fighting for the club which should serve them well in the Championship if they were to stay.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Newcastle Win.

Spurs vs Aston Villa

The Hojberg that Mourinho had in mind at the time of signing finally turned up. Spurs picked up a regulation win, as Europa League definitely seems certain. While it’s still mathematically possible, a Top 4 finish seems highly unlikely. If the rumour mills are right, and MC is actually fed up with Levy and the Board, we could see some scintillating football from England’s main man as he puts himself in the shopping window.

Villa’s implosion continued with a loss at Selhurst Park. Even a top half finish looks unlikely for the Villans now. The only good news for Villa is Grealish’s consecutive appearance off the bench. Europa chasing teams will hope that VIllans show up and give Spurs a tough game.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to take the win.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal

Palace probably played one of the best bursts of attacking football in their win against Villa, the kind of burst that could send Uncle Woy’s pulse dangerously racing! With no relegation threat to worry about, Palace threw caution to the wind and played like they had nothing to lose. Expect more of that at home as they square up against fellow top 10 contenders. With Palace announcing the departure of Uncle Woy at the end of the season, the Eagles would be hoping to give him a better send-off from the bench than the one Pep has got going for Aguero.

Arteta’s boys would be well rested with no games over the weekend. The blank game week would have however been something that Arsenal did not want – helping them carry on the Smith-Rowe led momentum to finish the season strong and give them a fighting chance at Europa league football.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to scrape to a victory.

Burnley vs Liverpool

Sean Dyche will be extremely disappointed in the manner in which his team’s defense was penetrated by Leeds. And some good blocks ensured that the loss wasn’t worse. Vydra missed a good opportunity at 1-0 but thats something they will need to improve upon next season.

Klopp played a blinder by announcing Jota’s injury just before kick-off and breaking a few hundred thousand FPL hearts. The Hawthorns turned out to be a difficult place for them to visit again, with Allison rising highest to score a stunning header in stoppage time to keep them in the race for top 4. Klopp would want his men to be more clinical as they take a rightful swing at the Champions League places.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win to keep the pressure on the teams in the top 4.

West Brom vs West Ham

Like their fellow Championship bound side from Sheffield, the Baggies turned in a brilliant performance against Liverpool. They were hard done by losing to a last minute header by the opposing goalkeeper. Hal Robson Kanu looked lively and seemed to take advantage of Liverpool’s attack minded full backs. Big Sam may be going down, but one can never count him out!

While Moyes will rally his troops, he knows that the Hammers have lost the chance for a top 4 finish. He will rue the chances missed by Fornals and Antonio but that’s the beauty of football. His team possesses enough quality to come through this test and guarantee their Europa League participation next season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine West Ham win.

FPL Corner

Goalkeepers: Pickford/Dubravka/Carson

Defenders: Digne/Cancelo/Dallas

Midfielders: Fernandes/Son/Greenwood/Salah

Forwards: Antonio/Rodrygo/MC Kane

Leagues of Yonder:

Robert Lewandowski, take a bow! The Polish striker has to be one of the most underrated players in the football world. We rarely hear about his greatness but year after year he produces the goods for his team with this season being no different. He equaled a 49 year old record held by Gerd Muller by scoring 40 goals this season in 6 games fewer and can do one better if he scores in the final game of the season against Augsburg.

While the Scottish league doesn’t set the football world alight, Rangers F.C. did the unthinkable and went the whole season unbeaten amassing 102 points under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard (his first league title 😱), a truly remarkable feat!

In some news from Turkey, it was goal difference that decided the Turkish Süper Lig with Besiktas pipping Galatasaray to the title. Talk about fine margins 😱

Luis Suarez was considered surplus to Barcelona’s requirements at the beginning of the season, so it is befitting to see him score the goal that ended Barca’s hopes of winning the La Liga. Atletico scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes making them favourites to secure the La Liga on the final day over their city rivals.

In less than 24 hours since United committed the cardinal sin of letting the Scousers take a vital step towards securing Champions League football next season, their city rivals and pizza guzzling mathematical champions take on Newcastle in GW36 of the Premier League.

Lionel Jesse completed a stunning double of Player of the Month (April) and the Goal of the Month for his stunning solo goal against Wolves. The bottom of the Premier League table has failed to deliver this year with Fulham, West Brom and the Blades booking their tickets back into the Championship. The race for European spots though is well and truly on with 3 of the 6 English Super League wannabes facing a massive battle against Leicester, West Ham and Everton to keep their continental spots.

Before Bawa gets on to important life decisions such as whether to take a -4 hit or a -8, or altogether give up on FPL this season, let’s look at what he thinks of the fixtures:

Newcastle vs Man City

The Magpies were on a mission – to secure their position in the Premier League. Steve Bruce seems to be joining a legion of legendary managers such as Big Sam, Uncle Woy, Nigel Pearson and the likes to keep teams in all sorts of trouble up in the PL. We could have been forgiven to expect the old Newcastle back, after securing promotion but the Geordies flew out of the blocks and blitzed their old boy Ayoze and his team mates leaving everyone including Brucey dumbstruck. With the certainty of Pep Roulette coming into play, the Geordies can back themselves for an unlikely three points here.

After their across the city rivals literally handed them the title by making ten changes to their team, Pep was left amused by the party culture in England. First they forget to order a cake for Yaya Toure, then they forget to order food for their manager. Pep would be more forgiving though. Meanwhile, City would be preparing to emulate Ole’s boys from across town in making changes, as Pep will prepare to play panenka Aguero and 10 men to complete matches in the PL.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to win with ease.

Burnley vs Leeds

Chris Wood is one of the most inform attackers in the league at the moment. This is going to have Dyche scratching his head. Where was the Kiwi’s scoring boots when he needed them all these years. Wood and Westwood put Fulham’s survival hopes to bed. Burnley have nothing to play for, but pride, like their opponents.

Will this be Bielsa’s last season or will the Chilean wizard continue in office for another season is a question on everyone’s mind. Leeds have done the brilliant first season – one would hope for the sake of football that they don’t do a Blades and implode next year. Stuart Dallas can’t stop giving and was instrumental in Leeds’ schooling of the Spurs.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to take it by a goal.

Southampton vs Fulham

At this point of time Ralph must be relieved that they are staying in the Prem come August 2021. The injuries to Danny Ings were crucial blows to his individual and the team’s collective form as well. They never saw the highs of Project Restart. With Ings back and scoring, the Saints should look to a decent finish.

The Cottagers had pathetic defense to start the season with. Then they signed Andersen which shored the defence up. Unfortunately, they never found an inspiring signing in attack, who could ensure that they score goals. At the end of the season, the lack of goals and the numerous 0-0’s is what cost the Cottagers their place in the Prem next season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to take a free-flowing game with both sides having nothing to lose.

Brighton vs West Ham

The Seagulls finished the last game with 9 men! They will play West Ham without their pivotal man at both ends – Dunk. And Maupay. Brighton should really be thanking the Gods for not having to be in a relegation battle right now. How bad is the scene, if Dat Boy Welbz needs to bail you out time and time, again. If Potter doesn’t get lured by Levy, signings in attack is vital!

Credit: @premierleague (Twitter)

The Hammers will still believe that they have a fair shot at the top 4, and will not give up on chasing Chelsea. However, suddenly, they find themselves in a 3-way race for that spot. Moyes would be up against a familiar foe in Liverpool alongwith Chesea. Amidst all this, he can only wish that Antonio could have been fit, a couple of games earlier. In bullish form, Antonio seems to have now stepped into a Jesse Lingard shaped void.

Bawa’s Verdict: West Ham to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Chelsea.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa

Palace started as early season relegation contenders to a safe mid table position. First it was Zaha, then Eze and now its Benteke. They seem to be finding that one man who can score a goal or two and enable them to pick an odd win here and there to propel them to safety. The Palace management would need to sort their priorities. The biggest question of them all is, if they want to continue with Uncle Woy?

Credit: @FootyAccums (Twitter)

Aston Villa on the other hand started as early season pace setters. Around the halfway mark, you would have given the Villans a better shot at top 4, than the North London European Super League -rs. Grealish got injured and the wheels came off. Jack made it back to the bench, and Dean Smith would be hoping that his side puts on a better performance against Palace, than they did against United and Everton.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to take the win.

Spurs vs Wolves

Spurs are facing a massive battle to keep hold of their Europa League spot. After being hammered by Leeds last week, the London Whites need a win against the Wolves. Caretaker Mason is going to have unleash his complete arsenal consisting of MC Kane, Son and Bale, in the hope that one of them fires past the Wolves defence.

If there is one thing that has been helping the Wolves get along, it is their defence. The defence would have their task cut out here though against MC Kane & Co. If the Wolves attack can pull a rabbit out of the hat against a usually clueless Spurs defence, we could see them set in motion, a North London battle for the 7th place!

Bawa’s Verdict: MC to deliver a captain’s performance and ensure 3 points.

West Brom vs Liverpool

In Klopp’s first season, the Baggies were witness to that moment where Klopp gathered his boys and ran to celebrate with the away fans after a momentous draw. Things are going to be different this time around though. With relegation confirmed, looks like Pereira will be playing to salvage some FPL points for himself.

Salah, Jota and Bobby scored to suddenly put the Reds in the running for a top 4 spot, out of nowhere. They visit the Hawthorns knowing they are in pole position in this round of fixtures. They could get within 1 point of Chelsea. With comparatively easier fixtures, Tuchel must not be the only manager eyeing the 4th position.

Bawa’s Verdict: Walk in the park for Liverpool.

Everton vs Sheffield United

While Arsenal blank and Spurs play Wolves, the Toffees would be delighted to be playing the Blades. The Blades have conceded 6 goals in their last two fixtures, which must leave DCL and Don Carlo purring. The return of their preferred midfield pairing should also bode well for Everton.

There has been nothing much to write home about the Blades for a while, and that really stays. The Blades have a good chance to spoil Everton’s chances here before they roll into two meaningless fixtures against Burnley and Newcastle.

Bawa’s Verdict: Everton to take home the points.

Meanwhile the Government of UK has issued what is called an exclusion order, allowing the Premier League to renew its existing broadcast deals on same terms for a 3-year period ending with the 2024-25 season. In return for this order that exempts the Premier League from putting out a tender, the league has offered to invest 100 million pounds in areas of the game that have been most affected by the pandemic.

Shall They Just Play Daily?!

Featured

We have entered the business end of the Premier league and it’s been a wild season. No pre-season, COVID-19 scares, injuries, managerial changes, ESL but three things that remained consistent are racist fans on social media, poor officiating despite the use of VAR & people scheduling football matches who have never played a game of foosball in their life..

Another all English Champions League final was confirmed with classy performances by City and Chelsea. The Europa League finals could have also been an English affair if the real Arsenal showed up at their own turf. It wasn’t to be and the Europa specialist, Unai Emery and his Yellow Submarine will battle Ole’s Red Devils at Gdansk to lift this trophy. So let us move our focus back to the PL with predictions 🔮 for this game week:

Leicester vs Newcastle

Leicester were held to a 1-1 draw by a 10 man Saints side. When Vestergaard was shown his marching orders, BR and his team must’ve thought that another easy win incoming but that wasn’t the case. Vardy needs to get back to this ruthless best to help Foxes stay in the top 4 as Chelsea and West Ham are hot on their heels.

Newcastle, much to the surprise to most; didn’t really trouble Arsenal. They sat back, tried to soak up the pressure and allowed the Gunners to mount sustained attacks & finally succumbed to a 2-0 loss. Bruce will be hoping that his players give this game a go as mathematically they are still not safe.

Bawa’s Verdict: A straightforward Foxes win.

Leeds vs Spurs

Leeds oh Leeds! The moment one feels that this team is gaining consistency they play poorly and lose. Bamford and Rodrigo need to stamp their authority on such games but the game passed them by. Kalvin Philips was a big miss but it wasn’t the usual full throttle Leeds performance, maybe the team is finally running out of steam. Or Raphinha might just pop back into the starting XI and things might return to normal.

Ryan Mason must be thinking what’s the fuss about managing in the PL. The baby faced Spurs interim manager has 2 wins out of 2 after beating Saints and hammering the Blades. While a poor team was in front of them, Bale and Son ran havoc and were rewarded with goals and fantasy points in an otherwise miserable week.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace

This snooze fest doesn’t warrant any attention from Bawa. Good luck to anyone who wants to watch what might be the most boring game in the PL this season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Palace win.

Man City vs Chelsea (Match of the Day)

Clinical performances against Palace and then PSG puts City closer to another PL trophy and a first ever UCL final. Football experts are waxing lyrical about this team’s performance and one has to give credit where it’s due, money definitely buys trophies. Pep roulette will be back in action and this is a curtain raiser to the UCL final to be played in Istanbul in a few weeks.

Chelsea outclassed Madrid and Thomas Tuchel will be the first manager to take two different teams to a UCL final in consecutive years. We speak of City’s squad depth but forget that Chelsea isn’t too far off. They have a World Cup winner in Giroud warming the benches and beds of many fine ladies in London and players like Alonso/Emerson/Abraham/Hudson Odoi with another 45 loaned out across the globe.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw in the battle of whose squad depth is better.

Liverpool vs Southampton

While the last minute postponement of the game wasn’t ideal for Liverpool, they won’t mind playing the Saints this weekend. Anfield isn’t the fortress it used to be anymore and Klopp will be hoping that his forward line can re-discover some of the form that had helped them win the PL last season.

Ralph must’ve thought “Here we go again” when Vestergaard was shown a really harsh red card against Leicester but thankfully this side played well to rescue a draw and maybe his job. The red card has since been rescinded and Saints will hope that they can do the double over the reigning champions to add a little sheen to their season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win to raise hopes of a top 4 finish.

Wolves vs Brighton

Wolves did their Wolves thing and drew with West Brom guaranteeing their stay in the PL and mostly relegating their opponents. Apart from Fabio Silva scoring, there isn’t much to write about this Wolves team that has flattered to deceive its fans this season.

The Seagulls are one win away from securing another year in the PL and Potter will hope Dat Guy Welbz can produce another M.O.M. performance to ease the nerves at the Amex. Defensively they have been strong all season so its up to the lads upfront to do the business.

Bawa’s Verdict: Brighton win to extend their stay in the PL.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd.

Goals from Watkins and El Ghazi give Villa a chance to end the season in the top 10 and that would be a great achievement considering they were relegation favourites before the season started. Dean Smith, the board and the owners must be given credit for making astute signings to compliment the existing players and retaining Grealish who has been their kingpin this season.

Match#2 in 3 days against a motivated Villa team is just plain cruel. Without causing another uproar/ fan backlash, the FA have penalized United in the worst way possible for their fans staging a protest at Old Trafford before kickoff. It will definitely take a gargantuan effort for Ole and his squad to get through the next week.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

West Ham vs Everton

Michail Antonio, you beauty! The Hammers must be wondering where they would’ve ended up had Antonio not missed a few crucial games this season. Moyes needs his side to win as Chelsea could potentially drop points this weekend.

Everton doing Everton things! Don Carlo must be extremely annoyed at his side losing their way come the business end of the season. It looks like another season without European football for the Toffees.

Bawa’s Verdict: Antonio to the rescue.

Arsenal vs West Brom

The same old story for Arsenal at home with another match at the Emirates where they failed to score. The ramifications for the loss to Villarreal are unknown still but one can’t help but think that the fans, players and board are questioning “the process” Mikel is trying to build. There is no shame in losing a football match but the lack of effort, game plan and commitment is unacceptable.

Big Sam and his lads must take this opportunity of a downbeat Arsenal to try to boost their slim chances or survival. AMN will not be available as he can’t play against his parent club but Big Sam will hope to inflict more pain on Arteta and his team.

Bawa’s Verdict: A scratchy Arsenal win.

Fulham vs Burnley

This is the last class that Fulham will get in their battle for survival. Parker should ask his team to try to impose themselves and play with freedom. Good teams make their own luck and the Cottagers need to do the same and set the cat among the pigeons at the bottom.

Sean Dyche will remind his team that are not out of trouble yet. After their 4-0 win against Wolves, a loss to West Ham means there is a small chance they could get dragged into the relegation fight especially if Fulham can win this game. Chris Wood is the man in form and Dyche will hope that his striker puts away the chances that he might get.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Fulham win to make things interesting at the bottom.

Man Utd. vs Leicester (Match of the Day)

Match #3 in 5 days and playing another team chasing a top 4 finish won’t make it any easier. Poor Ole has already expressed his unhappiness with the people created this schedule and he is 100% right that player health doesn’t even remotely feature in their thoughts.

A better rested Vardy & Co. might have enough fuel in the tank to win this game to continue their quest for Champions League football. BR has done a miraculous job with the Foxes and securing a UCL spot it would be another feather in his hat.

Bawa’s Verdict: A narrow win for Leicester.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace

Ralph and his team get another chance to propel themselves further up the table after a dismal few months. While they have struggled with injuries to key players like Ings, Vestergaard and Romeu, Saints will do well to hold on to these players next season.

Zaha & Co. will want to end the season on a high for Roy Hodgson’s faith in them. Palace might have secured their place in the PL but will have to do a lot more to remain competitive next season as half of their squad are at the end of their contracts.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Saints win.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

After two tough games against Madrid and City, Chelsea will play against a tetchy Arsenal team. Tuchel has the players at his disposal to cause damage but it will be interesting to see what combination he will go with to ensure a top 4 finish to guarantee UCL qualification.

Arteta couldn’t ask for a tougher fixture to save his teams season and his job. He might have to rely on the youngsters again as the senior statesmen in his squad don’t seem bothered. Considering their away record, Mikel will hope that his team can score a goal or two at least.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine Chelsea win.

Aston Villa vs Everton

There is a small chance that Grealish might take a small part in this game. He has been a big miss for the Villans and Dean Smith will hope that their talisman can help them move up the table for an unlikely top 7-8 finish to qualify for Europe.

Don Carlo will need his players to step up and try to win their game in hand if they are to habor any hopes of plying their trade in Europa. Pickford has picked up form at the right moment and will be wary of Watkins and El Ghazi.

Bawa’s Verdict: Aston Villa to do the double.

Man Utd. vs Liverpool (Match of the Day)

Match #4 in 8 days and it being against your fiercest rival, isn’t what Ole would have hoped for. One can only wait and see the player rotation as it is unimaginable to see a player play all the games.

Klopp and his men might be happy that they play a jaded United side as it gives them a chance to not only beat their rivals but also give them a chance to finish in the top 4.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Liverpool win thanks to the PL scheduling team.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Lloris/Guaita

Defenders: Castagne/Dunk

Midfielders: Bruno/Salah/Bale

Forwards: Kelechi/Kane/Cavani

The Final Furlong

Featured

The Premier League did not disappoint its fans after a two-week break and surely it must be the most entertaining football league in the world. Barring 2 matches, 3 or more goals were scored in the remaining fixtures with West Brom beating Chelsea 5-2 at the Bridge and Newcastle gaining a point against Spurs as the major surprise results. The make or break part of the season is upon us and Bawa fully expects plenty more out of whack results coming with a relegation battle, mid table obscurity and the scrap for the Champions League spots coming to the boil.

So without further ado, let us take a look at Bawa’s predictions (most comical) for the week:

Fulham vs Wolves

Things looked good for Fulham until the 78th min after which their defence capitulated and allowed Villa to score 3 goals. A first start for Mitrovic since Christmas was justified when he gave them the lead but the manner in which they played the last 15 minutes will irk Parker. It’s time to play cautious but fearless football and Fulham fans will hope that their team can go on a good run to avoid relegation.

The 3-2 loss to West Ham will be a tough one to swallow as Wolves had enough opportunities to draw or even win the game. Nuno will be extremely disappointed with his defence to allow 3 easy goals on the counter without players putting their foot in to stop the danger. Offensively the lesser we talk of Willian Jose the better, the striker is so devoid of confidence that hypothetically if he was one on one with the GK he would try to pass the ball to his teammate and miss that pass as well. Yes, even worse than Timid Werner of Chelsea.

Bawa’s Verdict: A stalemate.

Man City vs Leeds

City brushed aside the Foxes with ease and are well on their way to lifting another PL title. They are still pushing for the quadruple and while Bawa hates to admit it, it is a real possibility for this squad, where Pep is ridiculously spoilt for choice. Their fortunate 2-1 win against Dortmund will force the Pep roulette despite knowing fully well that this Leeds team will give his men a run for their money. On e side note, KDB has signed a new deal and will remain at City till 2025 to destroy all records possible.

Leeds currently stand 11th in the table behind Arsenal on goal difference. While they turn up for big matches, Bielsa will hope that his team can take their chances and cause an upset. They gave City a tough game in the reverse fixture and were unlucky to just earn a point but the City team is a different beast now and Leeds will do well to come away with a point.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another entertaining draw on the cards.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Three away wins on the trot have brought some life back into the Liverpool side. They ran Arsenal ragged and totally outclassed them. Despite that unfortunate injury, Jota could still be the signing of the season and adds that sharpness to the Liverpool forward line that they were missing in the last few months. The defensive partnership of Kabak and Philips was fully exploited by Madrid and while the 7-2 isn’t fresh anymore, it will be interesting so see how they hold up against the Villans.

Grealish’s injury setback must have come as a big blow to this teammates as they failed to get going in the first half against Fulham. Credit to Dean Smith as his substitutes completely flipped the game on its head with 3 goals in 15 minutes. Liverpool’s form at home hasn’t been the best and after a tough mid-week fixture against Madrid, Villa will try their best to exploit any weaknesses.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to smash Villa.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel endured his first defeat as Chelsea manager and it was quite the humbling, losing 5-2 to a relegation threatened West Brom side. Thiago Silva must hate the sight of West Brom as he had another nightmare to forget. News of handbags between Kepa and Rudiger have been doing the rounds and while it’s the first set of thorns in the huge bed of roses for Tuchel, he would want to sort this out sooner rather than later.

The Eagles owe a huge thank you to Guaita, who had a stormer in the goal to keep Everton to just one goal. Palace is such an unpredictable team and players like Zaha and Eze embody this spirit completely to make them exciting on occasion.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to return to winning ways.

Burnley vs Newcastle

Sean Dyche must be seething to see his side lose 3-2 after taking a 2-0 lead against the Saints. Burnley pride themselves on their defensive strength but it was nowhere to be seen on the day. Wood and Vydra scoring is a good sign but Dyche will have some strong words reserved for his side to ensure they don’t drop points from winning positions.

No one in their right minds thought that Newcastle would get something out of their match against Spurs but to everyone’s surprise the Arsenal loanee, Willock scored a late equaliser that earn his side an important point. Bruce will be hoping that Saint Maximin’s injuries are behind him and a soon to be fit Wilson can help secure their time in the PL.

Bawa’s Verdict: Looney Toon win!

West Ham vs Leicester (Match of the Day)

David Moyes and his West Ham side must’ve thought of deja vu as they nearly scuppered another 3-0 lead against an out of sorts Wolves. Lionel Jesse just can’t stop bamboozling defenders, adding a Berba pirouette to his list of exploits. The race for Top 4 is heating up and West Ham are well placed for securing it but injuries to Rice and Antonio could spoil the Hammer’s game plan.

The Foxes hardly had a look in their game against City who were successful in neutralising any threat that BR’s team posed. The return of Maddison was a good sight for Leicester fans as he will be key to unlocking defences. This is a crucial game for both these teams in their pursuit of the Top 4.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Spurs vs Man Utd

After failing to beat Newcastle Mou Mama turned on his players and all is not well in the Spurs camp. Kane continues to do the business upfront but needs support from his midfield and defence of Spurs are to salvage some pride this season. It is no longer a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ Kane decides to leave Spurs in pursuit of silverware.

United might consider themselves lucky to beat Brighton for a second time this season despite playing some dire football. A season ending injury to Martial might actually help the Red devils as they can use the skill and pace of Greenwood and James upfront. Their UCL qualification is pretty much guaranteed and Ole will try to focus on winning the Europa to silence his doubters.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Sheffield vs Arsenal

Players at Bramall Lane seem disinterested and can’t wait for the season to end it seems. They don’t seem to be playing for their futures or for pride and that is certainly not expected of professionals. If they can put in some application this is a fixture they might be able to get something out of as this Arsenal team when pressured seem to be their own biggest enemy.

Mikel Arteta was at a loss of words after watching a poor Arsenal performance yet again. His players couldn’t put a string of passes together and completely forgot the basics of football. Credit to Liverpool for getting their tactics right but fans expect a lot more from experienced players like Auba and Laca. Mikel seems to be losing the dressing room and might have to put faith in his youngsters to bail him out after faltering again to keep a CS in the last few minutes of their Europa home leg.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to nick it.

West Brom vs Southampton

Big Sam along with most Baggies couldn’t believe what they witnessed at Stamford Bridge. A 5-2 drubbing of a high flying Chelsea is one of the results of the season so far and shows that there is some fight left in the Baggies. Big Sam will hope that his team doesn’t rest on its laurels and has the desire to beat a plucky Saints side at home.

Ings return to rescue the Saints on Easter Sunday was quite the miracle. With players returning from injury Hasenhuttl can go back to his aggressive footballing ideology and will hope to move further up the table.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Baggies win to spice things up at the bottom.

Brighton vs Everton

Brighton were unlucky to not come away with a point from Old Trafford. Danny Welbeck was a menace throughout and should’ve earned a penalty but Mike Dean (as expected) and VAR thought otherwise. Potter will want to get a result against Everton to ease the pressure and distance between the Seagulls and the relegation spots.

If it wasn’t for DCL and Richarlison’s profligacy in front of goal, Everton would’ve been out of sight in the first 30 minutes against Palace. While Guaita made a few good saves, poor finishing led Don Carlo down. The fact that Everton has a game in hand keeps their hopes for a top 4 finish alive but by looking at their recent performances it might not be a reality.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another draw.

When Bawa minds his language…

Featured

An absolutely mental GW. If you are a football fan (especially a Spurs fan). It is probably best that you keep all your hopes aside, and enjoy the football, thinking you are a neutral. The only predictable feature of PL these days seems to be that of Sheffield getting stuffed.

While we barely have half a GW, there are a lot of other important fixtures which PL clubs will be involved in. Let’s have a look at the key fixtures for this week:

Premier League:

Fulham vs Leeds

What has been the immovable object of recent weeks comes face to face against the Leeds attack. Parker and his defence had built a steady momentum, before they got hit by the Sheikh-storm helmed by Pep. It will be interesting to see how they respond to a relentlessly attacking side in Leeds.

If there is one thing that Leeds do right, and which might help them break through the Cottagers – is that they attack relentlessly. However, the propensity to miss a bucketload of chances (Bamford could’ve already had 35 goals for the season had he converted 75% of his chances) AND be erratic in defence could come to hurt them, putting a lot in the hands of young Meslier. Bielsa is not known to chop and change his side, and with an injury doubt to the ever present Bamford, it will be interesting to see how Bielsa reacts.

Bawa’s Verdict: Sides to share the spoils.

Brighton vs Newcastle

Ever since we called them out to be a shite side in this blog, Potter and his boys seem to have turned a corner. They have managed to score and even pick up points in what could be a crucial encounter against the Saints. With just 1 point separating these two sides, this could be a massive game for the teams that harbour any hopes of staying in the PL.

Steve Bruce will also be having one eye on the Fulham game while having his boys warm up for this game. Newcastle always manage to surprise us when it matters, sometimes with flair, sometimes with absurdity and recently with dogged spirit which saw Lascelles head home an equaliser at the death. With a game in hand over Fulham, Brucey would breathe easy if his team come away with a result here.

Bawa’s Verdict: Nervous draw to make things tighter around the relegation zone.

West Ham vs Arsenal

The Irons lost the Lingard/Moyes derby at Old Trafford. That shouldn’t take any credit away from Fabianski and his cohort at the back though. The return of the talismanic Lionel Jesse to the starting line up should add some wind to Moyes’ wings.

Fortune favoured the brave Gunners in the North London Derby. VAR didn’t play spoilsport in handing the Gunners a dodgy penalty, even though a Lamela rabona (potential goal of the season) helped Spurs take the lead against the run of play. That said, the Gunners are known to blow hot and cold, only time will tell what is going to happen this time around in another London derby.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Aston Villa vs Spurs

More than Dean Smith, the owners of Villa FPL assets were left devastated by the last minute draw at Tyneside. Nevertheless, the Villa machine must pick itself up, as they are now up against an even more distraught Mou Mama’s side. As long as they keep finding someone to put the ball in the net, the ex-Gunner Martinez and the (possibly) returning Jack Grealish should have enough in their tank to frustrate Spurs.

Mou Mama must have had nothing to say to his side after the loss last weekend and then in midweek. Just when everyone thought Spurs had figured their best combo with Son, Kane and Bale – Kane recovers just in time for the NLD and Son hobbles off in less than 20 mins with Bale applying a little too much vanishing cream in warmup 😉. You just don’t buy that kind of luck.

Bawa’s Verdict: A point to each team.

F.A. Cup:

Bournemouth vs Southampton

The only better PL opponent that the Cherries could have got, on form, would have been the Blades. The Cherries are 2 points off the play-off spots in the Championship, and with less than 10 rounds to go, anything is possible. The Jonathan Woodgate led side have had a mixed bag of results this month, and the Saints should be fair game.

Saints’ PL campaign is pretty much doomed. The day when they celebrated being top of the PL table seems to be long forgotten and buried. A Che Adams’ scoring run would be encouraging, and Ralph would be hoping that they can make the best of having opponents from a lower league.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to take this in extra time.

Everton vs Man City (Match of the Week I)

Don Carlo’s midfield has been hampered by injuries. He’d be happy with the performance of Tom Davies, who first ably stood in for Allan, and now stands in for Doucoure. The Toffees have lost two on the bounce, including having been outscored by Burnley. This isn’t the team that they would want to face given their current form and underwhelming performances.

There is no respite from the Pep Roulette. As Twitter jokes, the only thing left now, is for Pep to name 10 men in the starting line up, and still end up winning comfortably. The City machine is in ruthless form, with all of their attacking assets are scoring for fun – and if none of them do, then in John Stones We Trust.

Bawa’s Verdict: The blue of Manchester to take this comfortably.

Chelsea vs Sheffield United

Chelsea have been notorious for not blooding youngsters, and farming them out on loan instead; (they currently have 47 players out on loan). If there was one game where Tuchel could afford to do that, then this is it. Chelsea have been brilliant in defence but pathetic in attack. This is around the time when Tuchel could safely blame Lampard for having splurged money, to little or no avail.

The Blades have just given up on this season, and the board room is preparing for life in the Championship, so that they can fight to climb back into the top tier. There can just be no other justification for the absurdity that they have been peddling on the pitch. A crazy cup run could just be the morale booster that they need, but it’s very difficult to see that happening.

Bawa’s Verdict: Tuchel to make it 14 games undefeated.

Leicester vs Man Utd (Match of the Week II)

The Foxes didn’t break a sweat in their outing against the Blades. They calmly slotted 5 past Ramsdale with Vardy missing a few chances uncharacteristically. While you would expect them to have no issues with handling the United defence, the Reds’ backline has been a different beast with Henderson taking charge of goalkeeping duties. Brendan hasn’t had the best of times against United and this could continue here.

United have calmly being getting the job done. If only Haguire had opted to finish instead of clear the lines against AC Milan, this March could have looked very different for Ole. Nevertheless, they would want to get to the familiar territory of the semi finals, and hopefully take it forward from there.

Bawa’s Verdict: United to take it in extra time.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Meslier/Lloris

Defenders: Dallas/Dunk/Cresswell

Midfielders: Raphinha/Lingard/Aubameyang

Forwards: Kane/Watkins/Antonio

Leagues of Yonder:

UCL and UEL draws for the quarter finals are out and throws up some tasty fixtures. Sancho’s return to Manchester will be interesting while last years finalists face off again when Bayern take on PSG. Chelsea will be the happiest with their game against Porto but should underestimate the Portuguese giants at their own peril.

Dinamo Zagreb face Unai Emery’s Villarreal after their incredible 3-0 will over a leggy and uninterested Spurs. Ajax vs Roma will be the fixture to look out for.

The Suning Group is in all sorts of trouble, and them winding up the defending Chinese champions Jiangsu Suning rang alarm bells across the blue half of Milan. They could have an unlikely saviour though.

In disturbing news from France, PSG stars continue to bear the brunt of horrifying robberies. PSG were forced to substitute Angel Di Maria during their shock loss to Nantes during the weekend.

A hat-tip to Inaki Williams. In an age where lasting 5 years in a club is itself an achievement, Inaki goes and out and makes 184 consecutive league appearances.

Liverpool title bid over? You’re having a laugh!

Featured

The Premier League juggernaut rolls on and here we are all fit and raring to go for yet another gameweek before we have even had the chance to go to the toilet. This is turning out to be one hell of an anomaly of a season where we are being given massive surprises in every round. From Liverpool losing at home to Brighton to Mou Mama losing 2 consecutive home matches for the first time in his career and to poor ol’ Southampton conceding 9 goals in a match for the second consecutive season!

However, it’s the referees and VAR that are once again under the spotlight. This is possibly the first time in a while that two games finished with a side being reduced to 9 men! Mark Halsey’s comments from 2016 resurfaced on social media, and we can only hope that our beloved game is safe from the menace like spot fixing and institutional favouritism – which plague sport otherwise.

And on that note, let’s dive straight into this GW’s fixtures:

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Villa continue to play some wonderful attacking football but it is their defence that remains very inconsistent. While one could argue that Emi Martinez has been their signing of the season he was at fault for both the goals scored by Lionel Jesse. Grealish, Barkley and Watkins have started to click and will definitely pose a lot of issues for the Arsenal defence.

Arsenal would be licking their wounds from a very questionable red card and subsequent penalty that was awarded to Wolves. However, Arteta should take heart from the fact that he doesn’t have to play Luiz in the next few games, and that his pocket rocket Saka seems to be buzzing post injury as well. As they come up against their old mate Emi, the Gunners front line would want to brush up on some training ground knowledge.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Burnley vs Brighton

Bawa seriously wonders if one of Sean Dyche’s quirks also includes conceding goals to Man City. Almost like it was perfectly on cue, Burnley’s reliable defence was breached by Jesus in the third minute thanks to an uncharacteristic Nick Pope error. That they didn’t concede a lot more goes down to good rearguard action and a wasteful City attack. Brighton should pose an easier attacking challenge to the Clarets, and one which they would smother with ease.

Credit: @OptusSport (Twitter)

Brighton had Klopp’s veins popping out as they joined their opponents in handing Liverpool consecutive defeats at Anfield. Brighton’s attack needs to pick up their game and be more consistent and ruthless if they are to find a way past Pope & Co.

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to take 3.

Newcastle vs Southampton

You could have been forgiven for believing that Brucey had found the answers to Newcastle’s troubles as Dr. Evil aka Jonjo Shelvey put them ahead in the second minute against Palace. From there on, it was good old Newcastle – delivering the unexpected and collapsing to a 1-2 defeat. Wilson continues to trouble opponent defences which is some good news for FPL players, especially against a beleaguered Southampton defence.

There’s wreckage all around Ralph. The man hasn’t won a game since going down on his knees at Anfield. His injury list and suspended list are ever growing, their talisman is only slowly feeling his way back into the rigour of the Premier League, and to add to this malaise there is Mike Dean and VAR. While the VAR and Dean struck again, shipping in nine goals twice in two seasons is not justifiable. They will atleast be glad that they can welcome Bednarek back to the squad after his red card was reversed on appeal. And ofcourse, the Saints couldn’t have hoped for a better pick-me-up than a game against Newcastle.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw between two injury ravaged teams.

Fulham vs West Ham

Fulham didn’t have enough to trouble Leicester. They seem to be worse with Mitrovic spearheading their attack. While doubts will always remain about their defence, the ease with which they concede chance after chance will add to Parker’s list of growing problems.

David Moyes couldn’t have asked for a better start from the on loan Lionel Jesse. A constant menace up front, Lingoo took his chances well and scored two goals on debut and as a neutral it was good to see him back on the field doing things that he is good at. The West Ham defence was solid throughout and did well against an offensive minded Villa.

Bawa’s Verdict: An easy West Ham win.

Man Utd vs Everton

Manchester United have scored 9 goals in a PL game only twice. The first time Ole came off the bench, and the second time he watched his wards unleash misery on the Saints. The questionable refereeing calls egged on United’s momentum, but their performance can’t be faulted. The Red Devils will look to continue to apply the pressure on their noisy neighbours.

Everton were lucky to slip away with the 3 points from Elland Road. The freshly laid pitch didn’t do the players any favours and Everton took full advantage to beat an ever willing Leeds defence. While DCL scored one, he had a few other opportunities that a top class striker should take.

Bawa’s Verdict: Well played blue but Red is the winner.

Spurs vs West Brom

Spurs without Kane look like relegation fodder. While they weren’t battered by Chelsea, they definitely were under the pump throughout the game. If Mou Mama is to be believed Kane is not far away and considering their results he might have to be rushed into playing even if it is for a few minutes off the bench this weekend.

It was the one game that West Brom could have gone into with confidence. But the return of Fleck seemed enough to inspire the Blades to a result. The Baggies’ attackers need to pull up their socks, especially if they are to have any hope against a well drilled Mou defence.

Bawa’s Verdict: Mou Mama might not be crying at the end of this game.

Wolves vs Leicester

Wolves were lucky to get three points against the Gunners. They’d possibly need more than luck against the Foxes though. Willian Jose has looked sharp, and could possibly be the solution that the Wolves’ faithful have been longing for in the absence of Jimenez. He will have to start taking his chances to justify the tag though.

Maddison’s resurgence just as Vardy got injured has worked well for the Foxes. The return of Ricardo means they now have two solid fullbacks and should assuage some of Brodgers worry in attack and defence. With Vardy all set to return, Brendan would also be hoping that he can get Barnes and Madders to put together productive performances at the same time, and it could be just what they need to put pressure on the Manchester clubs.

Bawa’s Verdict: Fearless Foxes for the win.

Liverpool vs Man City (Match of the Week)

Liverpool couldn’t have hoped to be in worse form when the Cityzens come visiting. They definitely wouldn’t have imagined hosting City after back to back defeats at Anfield! Injury to Mane, Salah running dry and Bobby doing Bobby things has left Klopp on the edge. He’d desperately be hoping that the sense of occasion drives his team to perform in a game that could possibly define the remainder of their season.

Pep’s machine is rolling, and seems to be getting meaner by the game. They picked up a regulation win against Burnley with Jesus netting for the second week in a row. The absence of Allison must be a major relief for City. They would be glad to take on Liverpool in the form that they are in currently, but will also know that they can’t take anything for granted.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to edge it.

Sheffield United vs Chelsea

The Blades seem to be back. They have won 2 out of their last 3 games, and very few would disagree that they deserved atleast a point against City. The return of Fleck from injury seems to have given their attack purpose. The Baldock-Bogle-Lundstram axis seems as threatening in attack, as in defence. Wilder would be a more relaxed man these days.

Chelsea under Tuchel have kept three clean sheets in a row, first time a manager has done so since “The Special One” himself. While Marcos Alonso, Hudson-Odoi and Jorginho have found a new lease of life under the German, he will be hoping that his fellow countryman, Timo Werner can find his shooting boots sooner rather than later. The shackles seem to have been lifted and this team definitely has the potential to go on a winning run as their squad depth is scary i.e. 9 full internationals on their bench.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three-point Tuchel.

Leeds United vs Crystal Palace

The freshly laid pitch at Elland Road was as problematic to the players as was their passing early on. Leeds always make a fight of it but like Bielsa’s beverage they can’t keep blowing hot and cold. Bawa doesn’t see where the consistency will come from but they definitely need to defend better.

Woy would have feared the worst going down a goal in the third minute against a resurgent Newcastle. Palace stuck to their guns and thanks to some woeful finishing from their opponents took away the crucial 3 points. Bawa really likes Eze and the exuberance and directness that he brings to this Palace team.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Mendy/Fabianski

Defenders: Dallas/Evans

Midfielders: Bruno/Grealish/Son/Maddison

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

From the Leagues of Yonder…

One can’t make this up…Poor Sebastien Haller has been left out of Ajax’s Europa League squad, not because he has forgotten where the goal is but due to a clerical/administrative mistake.

Another one who has been left extremely disappointed thanks to a club’s management is Andre Villas Boas who has resigned from his role at Marseille over them signing a player (Olivier Ntcham) that he didn’t want. Nice of him to leave the $$$ behind.

Moving to Spain, Granada and Barcelona played out a thriller with the La Liga giants prevailing 5-3 to go through to the Copa del Rey semi finals. Antoine Griezmann was instrumental with 2 goals and 2 assists for this comeback win.

Last but not the least Ajax’s #1 GK, Andre Onana has been banned for 12 months by the UEFA for a doping violation. As Mr. Mackey from South Park always said, “Drugs are bad, Mkay?”

Here we go!

Featured

It has been observed that the Premier League schedule team has decided to up the ante and keep up with the relentless pace of the game that we normally see on the pitch. Another week has passed us by with a full round of matches and here we are on a Monday dreaming of the midweek matches in store for us. This is shaping up to be a fantastic season for the neutral where its becoming almost impossible to predict the results but we intend to learn from our consistent failure and push ahead nonetheless.

On a separate note on the FPL front, Pep Roulette killed a million hopes with Cancelo, Sterling and Stones not even seeing a minute on the pitch. This misfortune was only followed by Mane’s and Saka’s injuries twisting and turning the knife left behind by Pep! While no one in their right minds can predict what Pep will do, Bawa will definitely not shy away from making his predictions :

Sheffield vs West Brom

Sheffield proved that their win against United was not a fluke. They definitely deserved a point against City. With Ramsdale putting in another assured performance – Wilder’s prayers would remain the same – that his side finds their scoring boots soon.

Big Sam’s horror show continues at the Hawthorns. Every game looks like it’s only a matter of time before the Baggies see a third manager this season. With not much improvement in the winter window as well, the Baggies’ faithful better get their alcohol stock sorted for the rest of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Blades for the win.

Wolves vs Arsenal

While new signing Willian Jose looked lively, Wolves have a lot to worry about. Their inability to get past a suspect Palace defence would be top of that list. Uncle Nuno can’t wait for his favourite RJ to be fit to play again.

The last time Arsenal played United, a dry spell that set AFTV on 🔥 followed. However, with some more clinical finishing from Lacazette, the scoreline could have been very different. Lego Hair must be hoping Bukayo Saka doesn’t go about bruising his hip before important games again!

Bawa’s Verdict: Up the Gunners!

Man United vs Southampton

Somebody forgot to tell United that they need to stay top till the end of the season to take the title. The tendency to play wide every time Bruno goes off boil continues to frustrate fans. The defence will need to be alert against the swift Saints though.

The Saints were done in by VAR. Both occasions involving Cash. The first one a questionable hand ball decision and the second one aided by probably not squatting enough at the gym:

Saints would be desperate to put an end to their bear run.

Bawa’s Verdict: United to keep the pressure on Citeh.

Newcastle v Palace

The Magpies turned up in style to delay any Everton resurgence by another game. And in typical Newcastle fashion, absolutely no one except Wilson saw it coming.

Woy of Selhurst admitted that his is a side that is going to pick up a win here and there while stuttering to safety. Eze seems to have emerged as a reliable Zaha alternative.

Bawa’s Verdict: Palace to take a point from Tyneside.

Burnley vs Man City

Pope made 7 saves as Tuchel picked up his first win as Chelsea boss. There is absolutely no reason for the situation to change this match. The Clarets defence is going to remain extremely busy.

City’s riches in defence seems to afford Fraudiola the room to indiscriminately rotate his backline. However, while they get the job done, the lack of fluency must worry Pep, especially in a fixture in which they traditionally score big.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to ease through.

Fulham vs Leicester

Fulham deserved to take all 3 points against West Brom. Infact Bawa believes that Parker’s choir boys are one of the most improved sides over the season – defensively atleast. With more hands chipping in to support Lookman, the Cottagers could give the Foxes a good fight.

Brodgers has confirmed that Vardy and Ndidi are going to miss their trip to Fulham. On the back of a drubbing at Bielsa’s hands, that’s definitely bad news. However, in Madders, Barnes and Tielemans – the Foxes attack still has the potential to unlock Fulham.

Bawa’s Verdict: Fulham to share the spoils.

Leeds vs Everton

Leeds finally justified all the xG, xGA and all other numbers that we don’t understand by destroying Leicester. It looks like all that was needed was for Bamford to pick himself in FPL even though he too didn’t trust himself with the captains armband :

Image Credits: Fantasy Premier League (Twitter)

Hameez. Check. Richarlison. Check. Digne. Check. DCL just had to turn up as Don Carlo chilled his champagne. Then, Newcastle happened to Everton. The Toffee midfield got bossed by Jonjo ‘Dr. Evil’ Shelvey & Co. They can surely do better.

Bawa’s Verdict: First goal scorer takes three points!

Aston Villa Vs West Ham

Dean Smith’s boys ground out a 1-0 with a lot of help from VAR. That Martinez is back in form after that small blip will soothe Villa nerves. They are still on course for a happy ending to the season!

The Chosen One got humbled at Anfield, but the Hammers will be looking forward to this fixture. The return of Antonio has definitely made them look more comfortable in attack, and the Martinez v Antonio battle could as well make the difference.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa for the win.

Liverpool v Brighton

After 6 consecutive blanks in the PL, Salah turned up on the scoresheet with two brilliantly taken goals. Twice. With a slightly underwhelming attack on the pitch, Klopp’s punt could have gone wrong. However, their messiah turned up on time scoring 2 to ensure they remain in the top 4.

Brighton finally justified all the underlying stats and won against a twitchy Spurs. The biggest issue still is the lack of cutting edge upfront as they should’ve score at least 3 in this game. Potter has really set his team up well and will hope to cause an upset at Anfield.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool’s game to lose.

Spurs Vs Chelsea (Match of the Week).

Spurs look bang average in the absence of MC Kane. Brighton played them off the park and Mou Mama will be hoping that their Welsh talisman shows the same level passion in his football that he shows on the golf course. Spurs’ might lose yet another derby to Chelsea but this time Mou Mama can just point at the 3 on Chelsea’s jersey than putting 3 fingers up.

Chelsea picked up their first win under the Tuchel era, and now the boyhood Spurs fan comes up against them for his first big game. While Tuchel tests his squad out, CHO impressed along with Azpi and Alonso. However, we will have to wait and see if the new manager in Blue continues with his experiments or will unleash the Blitzkrieg on Mou Mama!

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to win this.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Stones/Cancelo

Midfielders: Salah/Bruno/James

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

Football fans surely remember Chapecoense, the Brazilian team that lost all but three people in a plane crash in 2016. This past week they won the Serie B and Alan Ruschel, one of the survivors from the crash, captained them to this honour. Bawa isn’t crying, you are!

With the games coming thick and fast, Bawa feels bad for the players who are being asked to strain every last sinew to get results for their respective clubs. Oh the glorious life of a professional footballer!

And if this wasn’t enough so called football fans hiding behind screens on social media, hurl vile and racist abuse towards footballers, who, lest we forget are doing their job and are allowed to have a bad day/days at the office. This is a reprehensible act and as the old adage goes “actions speak louder than words” so Mr. Masters and administrators of the game need to take this more seriously and find ways to catch and punish such cowards.

On a separate note, Bawa got a majority of the predictions right last week (for a change). An excited Bawa now takes a look at the matches this weekend.

Everton vs Newcastle

James returned to action for the Everton blue with a worldie that should’ve been enough to secure the 3 points but another mistake from Jordan Pickford left them with a point instead. Maybe its time Carlo relegated Englands #1 to the bench as he doesn’t instil confidence between the sticks at the moment.

After a poor first half, Newcastle woke up from their slumber to equalise ten minutes into the second half but as expected allowed Leeds back in to win the game despite missing a fair few chances themselves. Bawa is ready to wager $5 that Steve Bruce might be the next managerial casualty as it doesn’t look pretty for the Toon.

Bawa’s Verdict: Everton to pile on the misery.

Crystal Palace vs Wolves

Despite Zaha scoring in the 3rd minute, Palace were all over the place and were lucky that Antonio didn’t take chances. While Zaha is their talisman, others need to step up if the Eagles want to get back to winning ways.

As expected Wolves defended for their lives against a new look Chelsea under Tuchel. Nuno shocked the football community by starting Podence who was ruled out of the game as per Nuno’s presser. Also, we got to see Willian Jose for the first time but his most important contribution came defensively when he headed a goal bound effort in the dying seconds of the game.

Bawa’s Verdict: A hard fought win for Wolves.

Man City vs Sheffield Utd

City didn’t miss their creative force in KDB and scored 4 in the first half itself. We all know the quality in that squad but they have also been getting the rub of the green in terms of some really dubious refereeing decisions. Two offside calls have gone in their favour and it seems there is a “Sheikh” up at the VAR Hub at Stockley Park.

Sheffield shocked the world by beating the in form Manchester United at Old Trafford making the battle at the top and bottom, very interesting. Now that they have tasted some form, can the Blades go and cause another upset in Manchester?

Bawa’s Verdict: City to win big.

West Brom vs Fulham

Big Sam was rightly cheesed off with the decision that allowed Cancelo’s goal to stand but if he is honest the writing was on the wall. Another drubbing doesn’t help as the Baggies have the worst defensive record in the league, something one doesn’t usually associate with Big Sam’s teams. They are in desperate need of a positive result and this game against a fellow relegation battler couldn’t come at a better time.

Fulham were really lucky to come away with a point from Brighton thanks to an inspired Areola and a Seagulls attack that can do everything apart from putting the ball in the net. This is a must win game for Fulham as it could open up a 5 points gap with West Brom with a game in hand.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Fulham win.

Arsenal vs Man Utd

Arsenal are slowly but surely picking up form and come into this game unbeaten in 6 PL matches since Christmas. Arteta knows the importance of continuing this run and will need his team to remain disciplined against a really talented and wounded United side. This game might come too early for their latest recruit, Martin Ødegaard, their new #11.

Bawa has no words for United’s loss to Sheffield and still thinks it was a nightmare (cue 1:45 am kick off). The team is in such good form that this result will be hard to take. Despite Pogba’s re-emergence, there is too much pressure on Bruno to deliver every game which is humanly not possible. Tuanzebe had an evening to forget and probably won’t get another start anytime soon.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Southampton vs Aston Villa

Saints played well against Arsenal despite going in without their first choice full backs. Danny Ings and Che Adams are relentless and pose a constant threat supported by JWP, Armstrong and Walcott. The Huttl will be hoping for a better performance from McCarthy who looked a little iffy in goal.

Dean Smith must be wondering how his team managed to lose to Burnley despite having the better chances and possession. Mings and Konsa should hang their heads in shame for a poor second half. This game might come too soon for Morgan Sanson, who they’ve signed from Marseille for £16m, to boost their midfield.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to win this one.

Chelsea vs Burnley

Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge was a good one as his team dominated the possession stats with 820 completed passes. While many stalwarts in the game like Uncle ‘Arry aren’t convinced of his managerial credentials, Tuchel has a back to the walls job with a trigger happy boss and an underperforming squad. Their inability to break the deadlock will come as a concern but with only one training session under a new manager, its a positive start. It will be interesting to see how Ze Germans and Pulisic perform under his tutelage. This game against an in form Burnley couldn’t come at a worse time though.

Sean Dyche and his team continue to pull off a miracles, this time with a 3-2 comeback. Their win against an in form Villa who looked like scoring every time they came forward is a credit to their defence and the inspired Nick Pope. It is mind boggling how this lad isn’t England’s #1. Dwight McNeil also had a great game with a goal and an assist and Ginger Mourinho will hope that McNeil can now kick on and deliver the goods on a regular basis.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another draw for Chelsea.

Leicester vs Leeds United

This Leicester team just doesn’t know when its beat. Brendan Rodgers has assembled a fantastic squad and is getting the best out of talented players that had lost their way. Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Justin and Fofana are showing that its hunger & talent and not age that makes a good footballer.

Leeds were lucky to come away with the 3 points from Tyneside. Bamford has suddenly lost his mojo and Bielsa needs the likes of Rodrigo to step up. Their all out attacking philosophy is great to watch but defensively Leeds make too many costly mistakes as was the case with Almiron’s goal.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

West Ham vs Liverpool

At the beginning of the season who would’ve thought that West Ham will be 4th after 20 games. We may not all like David Moyes but he knows what he is doing when the expectations are low and is the main man at a mid table club. For those who didn’t watch the game, Michail Antonio could’ve had a hat-trick if he had taken the gilt edged chances presented to him. To add to this misfortune, he also lost an assist to Cresswell, further pissing off his FPL owners.

After their win at Spurs, an excited Klopp exclaimed “That was us. It was who we are.” Well Liverpool might have started scoring goals again but the serious injury to Matip means that they will have to bring in a defender this window cue Shkodran Mustafi to Liverpool rumours 😉. With both Firmino and Mane scoring, Klopp will hope that Salah can get his name on the scoresheet as well.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw, further adding to Klopp’s annoyance.

Brighton vs Spurs

Brighton were again impressive against Fulham but last the cutting edge in front of goal. These draws despite controlling games won’t do them any good come the end of the season if they get relegated and that remains a possibility.

Mou Mama must be extremely disappointed with his team. Hugo Loris and Joe Rodon had a part to play in all the goals conceded which is unusual for a Mourinho team. Spurs were set up on the counter but weren’t able to make the final telling pass to Son or Kane who limped off the field at half time and didn’t return in the second half.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to win.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Stones/Cancelo

Midfielders: Son/Soucek/James

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

From the Leagues of Yonder…

No matter how hard we try we just can’t keep Zlatan away from our posts. This time, the ex. Man Utd. strikers clashed in the Milan derby. Zlatan might have won the war of the words but Lukaku had the last laugh as after Zlatan’s sending off, Inter won the match, 2-1, in stoppage time.

It will be extremely disappointing if the news of CR7 breaking coronavirus protocols rules is true as someone who has contracted and recovered from the deadly virus should know better.

Sticking with Juventus, their veteran goal keeper, Gianluigi Buffon turned 43 on Thursday and while Bawa wishes him well, he would like to know the secret behind his ageing process.

While the double game week was amazing, these week day 1:30 & 1:45 am IST matches are really becoming irksome. Burnley’s win at Anfield brought Liverpool’s run of 68 games unbeaten to an end and has to be the result of the week. While the week has just started, the most eventful piece of news is the sacking of Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard. In his 18 months as manager, his only achievement was leading Chelsea to UEFA Champions league qualification (but is that even an achievement some would ask?)

With less than a week for the winter transfer window to close, Bawa expects some action on that front as the impact of COVID and injuries will have to be factored by managers for the rest of the season. So without further ado, Bawa takes a look at the matches this week:

Crystal Palace vs West Ham

City took the primitive approach and Stoned Palace into submission. Without Zaha, Palace provide nothing up front and this is a concern for Woy. They have signed Jean-Philippe Mateta from Mainz on an 18 month loan to help solve this issue and only time will tell if he turns out to be another version of Batshuayi.

Michail Antonio returned from injury to score 2 goals in 2 games and earn the hammers a much deserved 6 points. The only question now remains is if Antonio can play the rest of the season without getting injured, which going by his history won’t be the case. Nonetheless, the Chosen One will want to continue his teams fine run in the New Year.

Bawa’s Verdict: West Ham to continue their winning run.

Newcastle vs Leeds United

After a fine start to the league, Newcastle find themselves 16th on the table without a win in 10 matches. The news of Rafa Benitez becoming available again definitely adds more pressure on Steve Bruce who wouldn’t want to get dragged into a relegation battle.

The 1-0 loss to Brighton must’ve been hard to take but Bielsa magic is starting to wane. His players are always willing and put in a lot of effort but unforced errors and the quality upfront has been lacking. However, a 10 day break would have helped and Bawa can see them running amok at Tyneside.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to get back to winning ways.

Southampton vs Arsenal

In a repeat of the FA Cup fixture from Saturday, Saints host Arsenal again at St. Mary’s. The 1-0 win without any threat from the gunners will make Ralph and his team confident going into this one. This Saint team prides itself on the high press and hard work and will pose questions of the Arsenal defence.

Arsenal’s love affair with the FA Cup is over before it started and it comes as no surprise as players like Willian and Pepe who played the whole game can’t seem to be bothered. Auba might miss the game due to personal reasons and that makes its harder for Arteta as his offensive players just aren’t showing the skills/class they’re meant to possess.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

West Brom vs Man City

After their surprise 3-2 win against Wolves, Big Sam’s men lost 2-1 to West Ham. The return to form of Pereira and the astute addition of Robert Snodgrass bodes well for the Baggies. There are rumours linking them to Benteke and while that deal might not happen before this game, this a move that could benefit both parties.

The injury to KDB comes as a big blow to City’s charge. His quality will be missed but if there is a team that has the bench strength to compete then its City. With the assured Stones at the back and Gundogan chipping away at the goals, its the forgotten men that have come to the party. Bawa fully expects the likes of Sterling, Foden and Mahrez run riot at the Hawthorns.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to win big.

Burnley vs Aston Villa

Sean Dyche and his team pulled off a miraculous win against a misfiring Liverpool ending a 68-match unbeaten streak at Anfield. Barnes scoring must bring a relief to the Burnley strike force but its Nick Pope, a god-send for the clarets who does the business week in week out by single handedly keeping them in games.

The Villans were unlucky against City but ran riot against a hapless Newcastle and are a really uncomfortable opponent to play against. Dean Smith must be really happy that Watkins got on the score sheet on this one. With this team close to full strength Bawa fully expects Villa to fight for the European spots.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa to win this one.

Chelsea vs Wolves

Chelsea narrowly beat Fulham and were outclassed by Leicester at the King Power. Frank’s expensively assembled Blue brigade haven’t delivered and finally cost him his job. Rumours suggest that it wasn’t just the average football, Frank had some issues with director, Marina Granovskaia, who we all know is the one not to mess with. Bawa couldn’t care less who replaces Frank as till the time Roman own’s the club, “russian” roulette will continue.

Wolves shock loss to West Brom at the Molineux was a tough one for Nuno to take. He has moved swiftly and brought in the services of a striker in Willian Jose from Real Sociedad on loan. Nuno will be hoping that the trifecta of Traore/Neto/Podence can pose Chelsea the same issues that they did the last time these clubs met.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Brighton vs Fulham

Brighton are slowly picking up form and were impressive against Leeds. It came as a surprise to all that they let Matty Ryan move to Arsenal on loan but its the other end of the pitch that they need to do business if they are to get out of this rut.

Fulham were really unlucky to lose to both Chelsea and United despite putting up brave performances. Scott Parker has found a system that works for Fulham and if they can the best of Loftus Cheek and Lookman, they might be able to survive in the PL come end of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another draw for these two teams who could really do with a win.

Everton vs Leicester

Everton was the only club without any fixtures in the double game week and should come in fresh to this one. Digne and James are back and there are reports that DCL might be available too which would make Carlo a very happy man.

Rodgers reported that Vardy will be out for the foreseeable future as he will undergo a hernia operation much to the annoyance of many FPL players and pundits. While this is a big blow, the foxes have shown this season already that they can do the business without their talisman upfront. Maddison and Barnes are in great form and will continue to pose problems.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Man Utd vs Sheffield

United come into this fixture at the top of the table and having beaten Liverpool in the FA Cup. Ole has re-invigorated Pogba who has played brilliantly in the last few fixtures taking some pressure off Bruno for the time being. The defense still looks shaky and uncertain at times but that hopefully shouldn’t be a problem against a blunt Blades attack.

Sheffield lost 3-1 to Spurs in the PL but emerged victorious against Plymouth in the FA Cup. Billy Sharp returned to goal scoring form and Chris Wilder will hope that his team can pose a threat to the league leaders.

Bawa’s Verdict: United to win and remain at the top.

Spurs vs Liverpool (Match of the Week)

Mou Mama and team got a well deserved rest and one can be sure that despite his team having to play Wycombe in the FA Cup, he will be primarily focusing on the game vs Liverpool. Despite only being halfway through the season, this game will have huge ramifications as both teams have stuttered in the league recently and will want to get one over their direct rival and get back on track at the same time. Mou Mama will also want to rest both Kane & Son for this one as well.

The team that was scoring goals for fun hasn’t scored a goal in the PL for 4 matches and that will be concerning for most Liverpool fans. Klopp will want to have his team firing again as they desperately try and get their PL campaign back on track. One can expect a relentless attacking & counter attacking game Bawa feels and this could go either way.

Even though Salah scored 2 against United, Firmino/Origi need to put on their shooting boots if Liverpool wants to mount a challenge to retain the title.

Bawa Says: A Liverpool win to ease the pressure.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Stones/Cresswell/Cancelo

Midfielders: Maddison/Soucek/Bruno

Forwards: Kane/Ings/Bamford

From the Leagues of Yonder…

Finally some news from the ISL, Bawa brings to you a feisty Robbie Fowler (S.C. East Bengal manager) having a go at Pradhyum Reddy (Star Sports) for his poor punditry and choice of words.

In a really odd occurrence, Eintracht Frankfurt captain, David Abraham swapped shirts with referee in his final appearance for the club. Weird really!

After the signing of another bad boy in Mario Mandžukić, Zlatan has gone all Walter White to intimidate Serie A defenders.

And, finally some news from Turkey; Mesut Ozil has swapped the Emirates for Fenerbahce. Whatever might have been the case, Ozil deserved a better send off after spending 7.5 years of his prime at the London club!

Double Trouble!

Featured

Barring United’s 1-0 win against Burnley, the football played in the 6 match game week was as average as Jamie Redknapp’s football and singing skills.

Credits: Soccer AM (Twitter)

The biggest news this week will remain the retirement of Wayne Rooney who was bloody brilliant and probably the last proper street footballer England has produced. He retires a legend who won it all at club level and bows out of the game as the highest scorer for Manchester United & England.

COVID-19, injuries and cup competitions seem to have taken a toll on players and their performances but with the double game week upon us Bawa takes a look at the matches this week:

Wolves vs West Brom

Wolves were a little unlucky to lose to Everton midweek but with injuries mounting, this game couldn’t come at a worse time. Pedro Neto has been a revelation this season but is a doubt for this fixture. Raul Jimenez’s return to training is a good sight but if Nuno is to be believed he is at least a month away from any competitive action.

Big Sam has probably now realised the herculean task at hand as this West Brom team lacks the quality to play to his game plan and structure. The Baggies have signed Robert Snodgrass from West Ham to solve their creativity problems. What is infinitely more interesting than Big Sam’s tactics is Big Sam’s contract which could earn him a staggering 10 million pounds over 18 months if all conditions are met and if he is able to keep the Baggies in the Premier League.

Bawa’s Verdict: Wolves to add to Big Sam’s woes.

Leeds vs Brighton

Bielsa and his men got a well deserved break from the rigours of the PL but need to get back to winning ways. The 3-0 loss to Spurs was mostly self inflicted and knowing Bielsa, he would’ve tried to coach these errors out of his team.

Brighton gave a great account of themselves against a strong City side. While their performances need to be lauded, the Seagulls need to start converting their chances into goals and start winning games if they harbour any hopes of staying in the league.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to get back to winning ways.

West Ham vs Burnley

David Moyes has taken a big punt by selling Sebastian Haller to Ajax considering Antonio’s injury woes. Rice and Soucek continue to marshall the midfield with the latter scoring goals for fun. Their defence has improved and is tough to break and West Ham might surprise the book makers and secure a spot in the top half of the table.

The Clarets’ played well against the table topping United but as always lacked that spark upfront to make it a bit more of a match up. Sean Dyche will hope that the new American owners inject some money into the club and bring in some bodies in this transfer window.

Bawa’s Verdict: West Ham to clinch this one.

Fulham vs Chelsea

Fulham continued their solid defensive form and secured another draw against a full strength Spurs team despite Covid issues plaguing their squad. Bawa fully supports Scott Parker and his comments on not apologising to anyone, especially the spiky Mou Mama who proves that he is a prick.

After being outclassed by City, Chelsea were lucky to avoid a PL game midweek. Werner and Havertz scored in the FA Cup and should give them confidence coming into this double game week. Frank really needs his team to step up and start performing to its potential as he might find himself out of a job soon if he is unable to arrest the slide.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to romp to a win.

Leicester vs Southampton

Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job with the Foxes and will now be looking to kick on and make a case for the Champions League spots that they missed out on last season. The return of key personnel like Ndidi and Castagne adds to the quality at his disposal.

The 1-0 win against the champions makes for such a great story considering Ings scored the winner against his previous club and that Ralph Hasenhuttl got one over cocky Klopp. Ralph doesn’t seem like the guy who would want to exact revenge but the Saints would definitely want to get one over the Foxes who thumped them 9-0 not too long back.

Bawa’s Verdict: Saints to cause an upset.

Sheffield vs Spurs

Sheffield finally managed to win a game and its no surprise it was against the Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Newcastle. The Blades remain at the bottom and will have to change the course of history if they want to pull off a miracle and survive in the PL.

Mou Mama has gone back to being the ‘unhappy one’ and his petulance is comical at best. Instead of speaking about his teams inability to finish off chances he took offence with Fulham fielding a strong team and demanded an apology from their manager.

Bawa’s Verdict: Spurs to get back to winning ugly.

Liverpool vs Man Utd (Match of the Week)

The biggest match of the PL season is here and the champions come into this game second in the league; yes you read it correctly, second. Liverpool have failed to win a game since their 7-0 thrashing of Palace and they have played West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton since. Klopp can’t quite believe what has happened to his front three and instead of focusing on them, took a jibe at his opponents and their luck with penalties.

After their 1-0 win against Burnley, United fans have re-emerged from the wilderness and the world is a shittier place once again. Ole has done remarkably well to get this team to the top and will hope that his players don’t let him down. Bruno Fernandes won his 4th player of the month in a calendar year, a record and has been colossal for the Red Devils but faces a tricky situation as he is on four yellow cards and a ban if he gets booked in this one.

Bawa Says: A thrilling/dull draw, but a draw fo sho.

Man City vs Crystal Palace

Phil Foden, take a bow son! Only Fraudiola can answer why the prodigious talent of Fodya hasn’t started more games. City played well against Brighton but weren’t at their clinical best. Sterling’s penalty miss not only broke many FPL hearts but could’ve proved extremely costly had they not won the game.

Palace seem to be in all sorts of trouble most of the time, yet manage to pull out a point here or three there and continue their journey towards safety. On the balance of play they deserved more from the Arsenal game and Uncle Woy would hope that they can cause an upset at the Etihad.

Bawa Says: City to win this comfortably.

Arsenal vs Newcastle

After winning three on the trot, Arsenal did the most Arsenal thing again and were lucky to escape with a point against Palace. Arteta will be hoping the injury to Tierney isn’t serious as the Scot seems to be their most effective creative outlet. Arsenal have been poor at home and will want to correct that and get back to winning ways against a hot and cold Newcastle.

Bawa has time and again pointed out the unpredictability of Newcastle and this was seen when they lost to an out of sorts Sheffield. The return of Dubravka, the two Jamaals and St. Maximin should help Bruce put out a stronger XI compared to the one in their FA Cup exit.

Bawa Says: One Nil to the Arsenal.

West Ham vs West Brom

The Hammers take on the Baggies after their match against Burnley and this too will be at home for West Ham as the double gameweek fixture Gods smile upon them. The previously Chosen One would want to take this opportunity to get 6 points in the bag against a WBA team still finding its feet under Big Sam. It will also be an ideal opportunity to give Antonio some much needed game time after his injury to build up his match fitness.

Big Sam goes back to West Ham where he was never the most popular manager and he will be quite keen to get one over his old employers and pick up 3 precious points in their bid to avoid relegation.

Bawa Says: West Ham to pile on the misery.

Leicester vs Chelsea

The Foxes have their second match at home as well and will face a challenge in the form of Super Franks stuttering and spluttering side. Leicester will hope they can keep Vardy fit and firing along with their defenders.

While the onus will be on the Foxes to attack the Blues on their home patch, the pressure of the 3 points will be greater for Lampard as his team needs to pick up momentum if they are to maintain their bid for a top 4 place and secure entry to the Champions League. Bawa predicts an open and entertaining match

Bawa Says: An entertaining draw.

Man City vs Aston Villa

City have been a nightmare for the pundits. They have been an expensive Newcastle at times. Huffing and puffing to wins against teams they are supposed to roll over, and simply outclassing teams that started the season as contenders. This one looks like a huff and puff, with the Covid disaster at Villa Park.

Dean Smith has had a dream run in the first half of this season and was rewarded as the Manager of the Month for December. Covid has impacted the Villans and its tough to predict what sort of a team will they put out against City.

Bawa Says: City to continue their winning run.

Fulham vs Man Utd

Parker must be hoping that he can look at more avenues to unlock his side’s attacking potential other than Lookman. A frail United defence is probably the best place to start.

One way or the other, United would be expecting to take three from this fixture. A positive result against Liverpool would see them continue their momentum and destroy the Cottagers. An adverse result is going to see United fans in India struggle to stay up till 3 am, to see Pogba rescue them again.

Bawa Says: United to win this one.

Liverpool vs Burnley

Regardless of the result against United, Klopp will be looking for 3 points from this one and will expect his team to be too strong for a spirited, organised but ultimately very limited Burnly side.

The Ginger Mourinho will be praying to the Gods for a miracle for Burnley to get anything out of this one.

Bawa’s Verdict: A routine Liverpool win.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle

Irrespective of their result against City, it is safe to say that Newcastle is going to be an easier bout to handle. We could potentially see more recoveries, and a (rude) awakening in some of their fitter players.

This is a script that the Geordies excel at. There is no team that revels in uncertainty like Newcastle. However, with most of their A-Listers coming back, Brucey could continue to set up their journey to safety.

Bawa Says: Villa to win the battle of Covid struck teams.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Pope/Ederson/Leno

Defenders: Chilwell/Cresswell/Cancelo

Midfielders: Maddison/Bruno/Soucek/KDB

Forwards: Vardy/Kane/Ings

From the Leagues of Yonder…
