The Final Fury

Featured

Greetings!!

Here we are, at the end of a quite frankly ridiculous and a pundit shaming of a season! It is one which has been unprecedented in so many ways and we are unlikely to see one like this for many years. Half way through this season, nobody would’ve bet their hard earned money on City to run away with the championship. After the start that they had, nobody would have suggested Ole’s United would finish second (albeit a distant one but with a game to spare), & West Ham inspired by United ol’ boys, Moyes & Messi Lingard to within a whisker of qualifying for Europe.

The season has been dominated by a lot of themes but some stayed constant like VAR, refereeing howlers, muscle injuries and Spurs bottling it time and again. We are set up for an exciting last day of the season, with two Champions League and the Europa League spots up for grabs.

All in all, this was a brilliant experience for Bawa. You read some, you absolutely ignored some & in the end, we know that there are a few hundred lovely people out there (thanks to the wordpress data capture analytics) who turn up every week, only to see us get our predictions absolutely wrong. Thank you for supporting & bearing with us and in the interest of maintaining discipline; we refuse to go away quietly as we intend to go out all gun’s blazing. It’s one last opportunity for us to get all our predictions hilariously wrong.

On that note, let us have a look at what Bawa has to say (with full confidence) on the final set of matches.

Here’s to plenty of goals & final day madness!!

Arsenal vs Brighton

AFTV can go into an absolute meltdown and they couldn’t be faulted for their manager publicly accepting that they have made a lot of mistakes this season and they need to learn. The criticism that Arteta got an easy job because he sat on Pep’s bench grows louder. On the other hand, Arteta has definitely made improvements and a little bit more patience could reap them rich rewards. Nothing much to say about their squad but them kids be alright!

In Dat Boy Welbz, Brighton will be missing a major attacking outlet. The former Arsenal man has been Potter’s respite in the weeks that have gone by. Lewis Dunk’s return from suspension should be a boost though. In what could be his last game for the Seagulls, Dunk’s presence in both the boxes could be crucial.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to take this by a few goals.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

Villa have completely tapered from where they were at the start of the season. Consequently, they also pose a much milder threat to Chelsea’s Champions League ambitions (if the Blues don’t end up taking it at Porto). Grealish’s return in the last match would have been a relief to Smith, and the Englishman would want to put in one last performance in the shop window before someone swoops in for him for what would be the GDP of Liberia & Sierra Leone combined.

Chelsea post Tuchel have been what their fans would have wanted all season. Timo VARner had yet another goal written off due to VAR. But Rudiger and Jorginho ensured that Chelsea seriously reduced the threat levels of Leicester to their place in next season’s UCL. As long as Tuchel puts Mendy between the sticks, they should be alright!

Credits: @goal (Twitter)

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to just edge this.

Fulham vs Newcastle

Fulham, who swiftly return to the Championship and have nothing to play for but pride will take on the Geordies at home. In a season of ‘what-if’, the Cottagers would seriously wonder how things could have turned out, if their attack had turned up in at least half of the games that they drew.

Newcastle have built up a brilliant momentum to please their potential Saudi suitors. Joe Willock would also want to top his form off with another brilliant showing before he returns to his place that is unfairly occupied by an expensive signing or two at the Emirates.

Bawa’s Verdict: Howay The Lads – Newcastle to sign off with a win.

Leeds vs West Brom

It’s their first Premier League home game in more than a decade in front of their fans. Bielsa’s boys would want to dance around the Baggies to give their fans something to cheer. Expect a few goals and a raucous crowd.

Big Sam will also leave his post at the Hawthorns after this game, making him the second PL fossil that will be without a job at the end of the season. It’s all about Pereira (if he starts as he is carrying a small injury) and how he can show other PL clubs what they would get by keeping him in the Prem. There is nothing much to write about the Baggies squad now.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to run riot

Leicester vs Spurs (Match of the Week)

The Foxes completed a brilliant Cup run but seem to have lost steam in the Prem. The absence of Evans seems to be hurting them defensively. Iheanacho meanwhile continues to score for fun, and by the looks of the Spurs defence, should continue to as well. Brodgers would know that his side will have to give it all, to displace his former club from the top 4 or else face elimination from the CL AGAIN on the last day.

Ryan Mason’s Spurs have looked very likely to concede at home, and they are worse away. Add to it that this could be MC Kane’s last ever game for the Spuds, this could be a comedy of Spurs proportions. Mou Mama rolled all 3 of his usual seasons into one and has left Spurs desperately clutching for a Europa League place.

Bawa’s Verdict: A nervy draw where both sides lose.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

What was written off to be a horrible season in defence of their title has achieved a decent shape come last day. Mo Salah has proved his enduring class & value once again by pulling along the side when they were found lacking. TAA has come into some serious form as well and will be posing serious questions to Southgate and his Euros selection. Liverpool have not had the best finishes to the season in the years gone by but they will be aware that a few million pounds and the small case of participating in the Champions League next season are in the balance here.

Palace will want to give their manager the perfect send-off. Benteke’s form will be on Klopp’s radar provided the Belgian recovers from what seems to be an ankle injury. Half the world will be hoping that Uncle Woy has the last laugh against his former employers, as he signs off from the footballing world.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to take this one.

Man City vs Everton

Brighton pipping Pep’s boys to the post would count for nothing. Pep would still rest his key players, with focus on the upcoming Champions League final, especially knowing that his opponents (Chelsea) have a lot at stake against Villa. We would also hope Aguero beats the roulette and gets a start. A true legend of the Premier League and Man City.

Everton have only themselves to blame for the position that they are in. They will go back to the drawing board with nothing to show for some exciting exploits in the early half of the season. Hameez’s fitness will continue to be a concern, and Don Carlo will be hoping that they can work on it during this off-season.

Bawa’s Verdict: City parade to go on.

Sheffield United vs Burnley

The Blades’ fans must be thanking their stars or Gods that this season is finally over. Onwards and hopefully upwards from the Championship.

Sean Dyche must be uneasy looking at his side now. In the absence of Pope, the defence is a wobbly mess and looks certain to concede. But Chris Wood and his motley crew of midfielders can’t seem to stop scoring! If you are looking for some upside in your FPL team, Wood could be your go-to man!

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to take home points.

West Ham vs Southampton

Moyes will be proud of the fight that his squad has shown. They have been unlucky with injuries. What could have been, if Antonio and Cresswell hadn’t spent time on the physio’s table is anyone’s guess! West Ham would still look to wrap up that Europa League spot, and maybe sign Lionel Jesse permanently in the summer!

Ralph has had a horrible season with luck, injuries and VAR. Their resurgence after being destroyed by Leicester last season was used as a marker by many, after Bruno and Co. demolished them. However, that was not to be, and the Saints would be glad that they were not in any relegation scrap in a season like this.

Bawa’s Verdict: Hammers to win and secure their Europa League spot.

Wolves vs Man Utd

It’s Uncle Nuno’s farewell game. It’s only a shame that Jimenez won’t be around to bang in a few against a United side that will see some rotation (hopefully!). With the departure of Nuno, the Wolves roster could also see other significant departures, this could be a farewell match for many in Wolves’ colours & of Portuguese nationality.

With a Europa League Final on Wednesday night & with second place wrapped up, Bawa requests that somebody/anybody please tell Ole’ that he can rest Bruno. With Daddy and Diallo upfront, United should have enough fire power to handle the Wolves and end the season in a manic flourish given that United will definitely concede as well.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Draw for Wolves?

FPL Corner

Goalkeepers: Allisson/Martinez/Leno

Defenders: TAA/Cresswell/Dallas

Midfielders: Raphinha/Aubameyang/Salah

Forwards: Antonio/Wood/Bamford

Robert Lewandowski is now the sole record holder for most goals in a Bundesliga season. Despite Augsburg’s best efforts, Lewa scored his 41st of the season with the last kick of the game to earn him this accolade. It’s Football, Bloody Hell!

Greetings to all after what has been a seismic week in our big little world of football!!

Here’s a quick look at some numbers: 4 out of the 6 English teams that were founding members of the European Super League are not assured of a place in next year’s edition of the Champions League by virtue of their current league position. For the first time in around a decade, Juventus are looking at losing out on the qualification as well, with Napoli and Lazio putting serious pressure on the Old Lady of Piedmont. Since AC Milan last played a Champions League tie, Bawa has grown older, wiser, gotten married and had a lovely little Bawa – who would not have experienced the unrivalled joy of league football, because some filthy rich football club owners decided to milk a new cash cow, only so that they can laugh all the way to the bank.

As history will remember it, a 2 billion dollar scheme folded up in 2 days, and for the first time in his life, Petr Cech was in front and not behind the parked bus, and that sent the pack of cards falling ending up with United’s biggest trophy since Fergie left – Ed Woodward’s head!

As the week continues to give, lets look at what Bawa has to say on this week’s fixtures:

Arsenal vs Everton

The story of Lacazette’s career has written itself a chapter in North London as well. Just when it looked like he was getting to be the mean machine that he was at Lyon, Laca pulled up injured. With both Auba and Laca out, Fake Pep has a battle on his hands to finish in the top 10 forget the top 6. But then, the kids are alright & they might just bail him out again.

Gylfi Sigurdsson rolled back the years and scored a stunning strike to hammer the nail on Mou Mama’s fourth stint as a manager in the Premier League. The return of DCL and the lively form of Hameez must have Don Carlo purring. MC Kane put away the two mistakes made by Everton and while their defence is a worry, we may not see a furrowed brow on Don Carlo’s face when they face a youthful Arsenal side.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Klopp and his men stood up admirably to the grey heads at Fenway Park, culminating in a John Henry apology video. Not starting Salah might be a mistake that Klopp would not want to repeat. A visit from the Geordies will always be welcome, Klopp would just be hoping that the Toons leave their mean streak at the This is Anfield sign.

Steve Bruce’s Black and White Army are marching, and there is no stopping them. Not even Lionel Jesse could put a stop to the Looney Toon 😜 . A reinvigorated St Maximin and the return of Wilson could lead the Geordies into the comfort of mid table mediocrity, as they prepare to put themselves in the Saudi shop window this summer.

Bawa’s Verdict: Now that there is no ESL, Liverpool to continue their march towards the UCL spots.

West Ham vs Chelsea (Match of the Week)

Who would have thought that David Moyes’ men are going to be going hammer and tongs to deny one of the entitled lot a place in Europe. They would be hoping that Cresswell returns to provide a semblance of defensive stability, and Antonio is back to share the burden with Lionel J.

If not for Brighton and Dat Boy Welbz’ dogged determination to not score, the Blues would have been the chasing side in this battle for the fourth position. Havertz has been coming into his own in that False 9 position, and the Blues would be looking forward to having Mendy back between the sticks.

Bawa’s Verdict: An exciting draw.

Sheffield United vs Brighton

The biggest news coming out of Bramall Lane is that the owner of Sheffield United, who is an accomplished FPL player himself, has given in and transferred in Lingard. There is nothing much to write home about Aaron Ramsdale and ten other Blades.

This is going to be a classic tale of the entertaining host and the unwilling guest. Sheffield cannot keep a clean sheet, Brighton can’t score. However, Brighton would be hoping to put some more distance between the chasing pack and themselves here.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three point Seagulls.

Wolves vs Burnley

While the ESL lived its short life, the Wolves’ social media team lost no time in claiming what was rightfully theirs – the 2018/19 Premier League title. There’s nothing much to write about the Wolves attack, they’d hope that their defence manages to keep Wood and Vydra out while one of their outfielders manage to sneak one past the Clarets backline.

Burnley have conceded an uncharacteristic 8 goals in their last 3 games. This must have Dyche gobbling earthworms and scratching his head to figure what went wrong. While Pope has been a miss, Peacock-Farrell has not put a foot wrong as such. A pleasant surprise at the other end, the usually goal shy Claret front line have managed to keep the scorer busy in each of their last three games.

Bawa’s Verdict: Boring draw.

Leeds United vs Man Utd.

Leeds’ social media team enacted a classic Bollywood move of taking one concept that worked and killing it by using it on every possible occasion. Unlike Bamford, Llorente didn’t let down the naysayers on the field and scored a vital equaliser. While his struggles in front of goal continue, Bamford turned up in Rashfordesque form at the post match asking questions that put the larger population to shame.

Man United wrecked everyone’s expectations in the return fixture by smashing 6 past Meslier. Ole and the boys must be buoyed by the latest boost of Woodward quitting, and if they had half the enthusiasm of the fans, they should be steamrolling Leeds here. But with Leeds in fine fettle, this one is going to be much closer than one expects.

Bawa’s Verdict: Manchester Reds to take this with great discomfort.

Aston Villa vs West Brom

Villa will be without Cash at right back after his sending off against City. Villa without Grealish look a shadow of the team that was producing some fantastic results. Watkins as usual is the willing runner up front but doesn’t get the required support.

Big Sam would want his team to put one over their Midlands rivals and push towards that 17th spot. His squad seems to have finally bought into his style of play and are the in form team at the moment.

Bawa’s Verdict: A dull draw.

Leicester vs Crystal Palace

Leicester absolutely destroyed the Baggies, pouring cold water on the Big Sam Fan Army which was waking up from a slumber, and at the same time solidifying their charge to a top 4 slot. While Kelechi continued his good form, Foxes should be happy that Vardy was back to what he is doing best – banging in the goals. If I was an Eagles defender, these two aren’t the strike force that I want to be up against.

In case nobody noticed, Palace did not play in the Premier League last time around. Uncle Woy dusted his hat, pulled out the fishing rods and spent some quality time by the river, as the football world went into meltdown. Now that they are up against Kelechi & Co., among other things he’d be praying for mercy.

Bawa’s Verdict: Leicester all the way.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Sanchez/Schmeichel

Defenders: TAA/Dunk/Castagne

Midfielders: Salah/Lionel Jesse/Bruno/Pereira/Greenwood

What a fantastic game week! If it weren’t for the drab draw between Everton and Brighton, we would’ve seen a result in every match. As always the attention seeking VAR and match referees came back into scrutiny when they disallowed perfectly good goals in the United v Spurs and Baggies v Saints fixtures. Bawa has given up on the interpretation and the application of VAR this season and hopes that the FA and the PGMOL can figure out the tech to their and the leagues’ advantage.

So without further ado, let us take a look at the predictions for the week:

Everton vs Spurs

Don Carlo deploying 6 defenders on the field was as big a surprise as DCL’s injury. The fact that they picked up a point and have a game in hand keeps their hopes for a top 4 finish alive. Don Carlo and Big Dunc will have to come up with something special as the players don’t seem too arsed to push for European spots.

In his trophy laden career, Mou Mama has lost 10 games for the first time in a season with a club and it doesn’t come as a surprise, coz Spurs, the joke practically writes itself 😉. Spurs have dropped 18 points from a leading position this season and if this continues they won’t qualify for UCL and another sacking followed by a massive compensation package might be on the cards for Mou Mama. Off the field Spurs had a massive signing in Dulux, their official paint partners who promptly went on to whitewash the club on social media.

Goal: Dulux
Assist: @rohit001

Fun Fact: Did you know Son underwent mandatory military service with South Korea! Bawa refuses to believe this coz surely a proud military man wouldn’t need 10 players to help him up after a light tap to their face.

Bawa’s Verdict: A drab draw to start the weekend.

Newscastle vs West Ham

Brucey’s master plan to use Saint Maximin and Wilson for 45 mins paid huge dividends as “Looney Toon” fought back to win 2-1 against Burnley. They sit 6 points above the relegation zone and are 1 point behind Burnley & Brighton making it extremely interesting at the bottom.

Another 3-0 lead and another scare at the end. David Moyes will be hoping that his team plays out some boring games coz surely his heart can’t take this week in and out. Lionel Jesse just can’t stop scoring and will get rewarded with a night out and stay at the luxurious, Corinthia Hotel by his club captain for his exploits.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Hammer blow to Newcastle’s surge.

Wolves vs Sheffield

A stoppage time winner by Adama Traore will help ease the pain of losing Pedro Neto for the rest of the season. Willian Jose thought he was off the mark for Wolves only for his goal to be chalked off by VAR. Poor chap can’t catch a break (Bawa mischievously smiles).

Another match, another pedestrian performance by the Blades. They are playing piss poor football and can’t manage to even hold the ball and put a string of passes together. While he started off as a liability, Ramsdale is definitely their player of the season but will get relegated again.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Wolves win.

Arsenal vs Fulham

A 3-0 win without any fuss is something Mikel and his team welcomed. Laca took his goals well and there were some encouraging performances. Now with their place in the UEL semi final confirmed after a clinical performance in Prague, Mikel will hope that his team can remain consistent till the end of the season. Yes, hope.

Scott Parker looked a dejected man after his side conceded in stoppage time. After losses to Villa and Wolves, Fulham’s fate is nearly sealed. He will hope that the mid-week game and travel to Prague will help his side cause problems to a jaded Arsenal team.

Bawa’s Verdict: Arsenal to nick it.

Man Utd vs Burnley

Another comeback victory for United, especially one over Mou Mama couldn’t be sweeter for Ole and this team. Despite the suspended Shaw, Maguire and McTominay, Ole’s men beat Granada without breaking a sweat and Ole will hope that the same form is replicated in the PL on the weekend. While United have been killing it away for a while, Ole in the post match press conferences is coming into his own, and Bawa likes.

Two matches lost from winning positions must be making Sean Dyche want to tear his hair out, oh wait 🤔 Vydra scored another good goal but its the defence that couldn’t cope with Saint Maximin. Burnley sit 16th in the table but if results don’t go their way, they could find themselves right in the middle of the relegation battle, one they would want to avoid.

Bawa’s Verdict: A walk in the park for United.

Leeds vs Liverpool

Bielsa beat Guardiola for the first time in his career and it was such a typical dogged Leeds performance. Despite being a man down for 50+ minutes against the league leaders, Leeds found the energy and resources to counter attack in stoppage time for Dallas to slot past Ederson. What a magnificent sight!

A come from behind win against Villa has given Liverpool hope of UCL qualification. Salah is back to doing what he does best, score goals. With the attacking talent at their disposal it is still a mystery how they went through a bad patch in the middle of the season. Like the first game of the season, Leeds will give them a run for their money and Klopp better be prepared.

Bawa’s Verdict: A game high on octane but ending in a draw.

Chelsea vs Brighton

Chelsea thrashed Palace and eased their way into the semi finals of the UCL after a solid display against FC Porto. Werner didn’t feature in either and Havertz as a false nine seems to be doing the trick for the Blues. They sit 1 point behind West Ham in 5th and would want to do their best to secure a spot in the UCL without needing to win it.

As seen a lot this season, Brighton dictated much of the play and created the better chances but could only come away with a point against Everton. They are 7 points clear of Fulham but will fully know that anything can happen.

Bawa’s Verdict: Another Chelsea win.

Spurs vs Southampton

After Everton, playing the Saints won’t be easy especially since they come off a FA Cup Semi Final. Mou Mama will be hoping to rest some of his players for the Carabao Cup final so it will be interesting to see how his team lines up.

Saints were outplayed by West Brom and were lucky to to concede just the three. JWP’s penalty miss wouldn’t have altered the result but they go to the FA Semi Final in poor form. They are missing Romeu’s presence in the middle and will do well to beat Leicester to reach the finals.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Spursy win.

Aston Villa vs Man City

Villa were unlucky to not come away with something from Anfield. They have seen a dramatic shift of form since their captain and talisman, Jack Grealish got injured. With a season ending injury to Trezeguet and some patchy defensive work, their work will be cut out against a City team that would want to get back to winning ways to clinch the PL title.

Their midweek triumph over Dortmund means that Pep’s team continues its fight for four trophies. What a team the Sheikhs have assembled! Phil Foden is finally getting the minutes he deserves and is oozing confidence and class. Dias and Stones have forged a great partnership at the back and seems to have resolved the only issue they had (not Ollie Watkins).

Bawa’s Verdict: City to beat Villa and inch closer to another PL title.

Leicester vs West Brom

Brendan was extremely disappointed with Maddison, Choudhury and Barnes attending Perez’s party despite COVID restrictions and was right to drop them against West Ham. While some are saying that the decision backfired and there is a chance that the Foxes might lose out on the top 4 like last season, Bawa believes this was the right thing to do. Players need to be held accountable for their actions and well done BR 👏🏻.

When the chips are down, Big Sam comes out to play! His team have produced two fantastic performances in the last few weeks and given them a glimmer of hope. The Baggies have found a steeliness to their performances and if they keep this up the relegation battle will be the most interesting part of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Leicester win to ease the pressure.

What the Derby!

Featured

As the European competitions are back midweek, Bawa expects a few more upsets in the PL due to fatigue, injuries and COVID. While Klopp conceded Liverpool’s title defence, United’s failure to beat West Brom increases the gap to 10 points at the top as the City juggernaut made little work of the so called Spurs and Everton test. Other than City winning, the only consistent thing this season are the increasingly incompetent referees and their failure in consistently applying VAR.

So without further ado, let’s get down to this week’s predictions:

Wolves vs Leeds

A Wolves win was one of the surprise results of the week. While the penalty might seem harsh, there was no question of the fantastic goal scored by Pedro Neto – who has stepped up big time in the absence of Jimenez. Nuno really needs to stop tinkering with his defensive shape / formations if he wants his Wolves side to finish in the top half of the table.

Leeds are probably the only team in the PL who don’t know when they are beaten; being down 3 goals at half time, they came back to halve the arrears come the end of the game. Alioski might have learnt a thing or two about humility as Saka ran him ragged from the first minute. While some may say that they came away with nothing from the Emirates, Bielsa might disagree as he might have found inspiration for a new formation.

Credits: @footballdaily (Twitter)

Bawa’s Verdict: Leeds to out run the Wolves.

Southampton vs Chelsea

Saints have lost six PL matches in a row since they beat Liverpool 1-0 and its not looking pretty. The team seems to have run out of gas and Hasenhüttl will have to really pull a rabbit out the bag if they want to stop the rut this weekend. The only positive from the Wolves defeat was Danny Ings getting back to the scoresheet but he will need to be a lot more ruthless against a confident Chelsea side.

Timo Werner finally managed to get one over the line and will hope that this kickstarts his career at Chelsea. With just 1 goal conceded in his first 4 games, Tuchel was confident enough to say Tu Khel to Kepa against Newcastle, who responded with a clean sheet. Chelsea have quietly gone about their business and currently sit in fourth.

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to run riot.

Burnley vs West Brom

One doesn’t usually associate Burnley with free flowing football, but that’s exactly what they did in their 3-0 win at Selhurst Park. Sean Dyche and his team have turned a corner and surprisingly have scored 4 goals, twice in the last 6 matches. With Ben Mee having satisfied concussion protocols, Sean Dyche will sleep well knowing his defence is back.

The Baggies fluffed their chance of securing a remarkable win against the mighty Manchester United at the Hawthorns. While Diagne took his goal well, he missed two great opportunities that a striker should score from. Big Sam’s worry is if they can keep this form and secure a few wins but this Burnley defence will be a lot more testing and resolute than the one they came up against last weekend.

Bawa’s Verdict: A score draw.

Liverpool vs Everton (Match of the Week)

The Merseyside derby is here and Bawa hopes its much like the previous one, feisty with a few goals, red cards and the teams sharing the spoils. Keeping loyalties aside, one has to feel for Jurgen Klopp who in addition to his teams poor performances had to cope with his mother’s demise without being allowed to pay his last respects. Their midweek 2-0 win against RB Leipzig will help restore some confidence but they would need to do much better in defence if they are to win this one.

Don Carlo must be wondering whether it was the rigours of United draw and the Spurs win or the overconfidence that they were completely outplayed by relegation battling Fulham. DCL’s injury is a concern but he needs the likes of Gomes, Hamez and Richarlison to step up if they are to come away with anything from this derby. Liverpool players will be looking at Pickford and baying for blood for his horror tackle on VVD in the reverse fixture.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool to edge this.

Fulham vs Sheffield

The Cottagers come into this with a rich vein of form and will be hoping to get 3 points in this one. Josh Maja couldn’t have asked for a better full debut, bagging a brace and helping his team to an unexpected win. If the forwards continue to take their chances, there is a chance that Fulham might make a fist of fighting for Premier League survival after all.

The Blades got back to their bad habits and were out run by an in form West Ham. West Ham played without a recognised striker and yet Wilder’s defence was pulled left, right and centre, chasing shadows. This is a must win game for Sheffield, failing which their fate will be sealed for relegation.

Bawa’s Verdict: A Home win for Fulham.

West Ham vs Spurs

West Ham hammered the Blades without a frontline striker with Lingoo making things tick in the final third. This is a much more difficult game on paper and Moyes will be hoping to have Antonio, his fatigued striker back in contention to start. The 3-3 in the reverse derby is probably the match of the season so far and we hope we get served much more of the same.

With rumours coming out of London that Mou Mama might be facing the axe, one can fully expect ANOTHER rearguard display from Spurs who might sucker punch West Ham on the counter. Kane and Son were neutralised by City but should have more freedom to express themselves in this one. The form of Hugo Lloris between the sticks has been patchy at best and Spurs fans will be hoping for a much improved performance from their captain. While the absence of MC from the bench might worry Spurs’ fans, rumours are that he was just being rested for the league.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Entertaining Draw.

Villa vs Leicester

Villa just about managed to hold on to a 0-0 draw against Brighton thanks to an inspired performance from Emi Martinez. The fact that Villa didn’t offer much offensively won’t worry Dean Smith much as they have been producing the goods so far and this performance might have been the odd one out.

The comeback win against the reigning champions tells us what a fantastic job Rodgers has done at LCFC. Maddison was right when he said that the injuries to the Foxes aren’t spoken of enough by the media and yet they find themselves in the top 4. They play a really exciting brand of football and are a really good team to watch.

Bawa’s Verdict: An Entertaining Draw.

Arsenal vs Man City

Arsenal’s pressing blew Bielsa’s plan out of the water and the Gunners produced their best half of football this season so far. Auba playing through the middle and scoring a hat-trick couldn’t have come at a better time even though he missed a few chances against Benfica. The defence is still shockingly porous but if the the forwards can take their chances upfront, the team might be able to compete with City.

Pep comes up against his former assistant but has nothing to worry about as typically Arsenal are found chasing shadows in this matchup. KDB and Aguero have miraculously declared themselves fit as they love to play against the Gunners. Gundogan seamlessly replaced KDB in the midfield and scored 9 goals in 9 games, that too despite missing a penalty. And if ze german doesn’t get you then there is Ederson who can pick a pass to break any team’s defence, just ask Mou Mama and Davison Sanchez. Gundo really did Sanchez dirty there 🤓.

Bawa’s Verdict: The City juggernaut to destroy everything in sight.

Man Utd vs Newcastle

United were expected to win away at the Hawthorns but were lucky to come away with a point. The Lindelof/Maguire partnership had ANOTHER game to forget as they were outmuscled and outpaced by a team threatened by relegation. Ole knows that he lost the chance to cover ground on City and will need to crack the whip to get his team not to drop their level. In a best case scenario, he would want them to play like they played Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Typical of Newcastle, despite a fine start, the Geordies will have to do well to steer clear of a relegation battle. Without Wilson, Bawa can’t see who will score for them but its United so expect 3 Newcastle United players to have their best performances of their career so far.

Bawa’s Verdict: 3 point Reds.

Brighton vs Crystal Palace

Another fantastic performance yielding a draw sums up Brighton’s season thus far. They play some lovely stuff but just can’t convert their chances or come up against keepers in the form of their lives. Potter would hope that things turn and his side can take advantage of such good performances to climb the ladder.

Palace were thumped by Burnley and the lack of fight in their performance must be really disturbing for their fans. Uncle Woy seems more interested in getting vaccinated than in his teams performances and understandably so as the Eagles were absolutely dire. On paper they have a good team but they rarely deliver and to think they won at Old Trafford and drew against Arsenal.

Bawa’s Verdict: The Seagulls to add further misery to the Eagles.

Leeds vs Southampton

As part of their double game week Bielsa’s men will hope to win 3 points to remain above the Saints. After a tough fixture against Wolves, it will be interesting to see the team he puts out as his squad is ravaged with injuries.

Saints can’t catch a break. After some tough fixtures against the likes of United and Wolves they play Chelsea and Leeds in 2 days. Kudos once again to the scheduling team at PL. Saints have injury worries of their own and would want to avoid another morale damaging defeat.

Bawa’s Verdict: One goal to tip it either way.

FPL Corner:

Goalkeeper: Pope/Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Tarkowski/Shaw/Andersen

Midfielders: Bruno/Foden/Raphinha

Forwards: Werner/Ings/Kane

Leagues of Yonder:

Champions League returned on Tuesday with PSG going berserk against Barcelona in the first leg without Neymar. Mbappe bagged a fantastic hat-trick and ran the Barca defence rugged despite all their attempts.

Not to be outdone, Erling Haaland stepped up and showed his class by grabbing a brace to help Dortmund to a 3-2 win against Sevilla. Bawa is extremely excited to watch these lads motivate each other and torment defences for a long long time.

News from the Championship, where referee Darren Drysdale decided to summon his inner Hulk and square up to an Ipswich midfielder. Refs in England clearly seem to be affected a bit more by this so called Mercury Retrograde.

Liverpool title bid over? You’re having a laugh!

Featured

The Premier League juggernaut rolls on and here we are all fit and raring to go for yet another gameweek before we have even had the chance to go to the toilet. This is turning out to be one hell of an anomaly of a season where we are being given massive surprises in every round. From Liverpool losing at home to Brighton to Mou Mama losing 2 consecutive home matches for the first time in his career and to poor ol’ Southampton conceding 9 goals in a match for the second consecutive season!

However, it’s the referees and VAR that are once again under the spotlight. This is possibly the first time in a while that two games finished with a side being reduced to 9 men! Mark Halsey’s comments from 2016 resurfaced on social media, and we can only hope that our beloved game is safe from the menace like spot fixing and institutional favouritism – which plague sport otherwise.

And on that note, let’s dive straight into this GW’s fixtures:

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Villa continue to play some wonderful attacking football but it is their defence that remains very inconsistent. While one could argue that Emi Martinez has been their signing of the season he was at fault for both the goals scored by Lionel Jesse. Grealish, Barkley and Watkins have started to click and will definitely pose a lot of issues for the Arsenal defence.

Arsenal would be licking their wounds from a very questionable red card and subsequent penalty that was awarded to Wolves. However, Arteta should take heart from the fact that he doesn’t have to play Luiz in the next few games, and that his pocket rocket Saka seems to be buzzing post injury as well. As they come up against their old mate Emi, the Gunners front line would want to brush up on some training ground knowledge.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

Burnley vs Brighton

Bawa seriously wonders if one of Sean Dyche’s quirks also includes conceding goals to Man City. Almost like it was perfectly on cue, Burnley’s reliable defence was breached by Jesus in the third minute thanks to an uncharacteristic Nick Pope error. That they didn’t concede a lot more goes down to good rearguard action and a wasteful City attack. Brighton should pose an easier attacking challenge to the Clarets, and one which they would smother with ease.

Credit: @OptusSport (Twitter)

Brighton had Klopp’s veins popping out as they joined their opponents in handing Liverpool consecutive defeats at Anfield. Brighton’s attack needs to pick up their game and be more consistent and ruthless if they are to find a way past Pope & Co.

Bawa’s Verdict: Burnley to take 3.

Newcastle vs Southampton

You could have been forgiven for believing that Brucey had found the answers to Newcastle’s troubles as Dr. Evil aka Jonjo Shelvey put them ahead in the second minute against Palace. From there on, it was good old Newcastle – delivering the unexpected and collapsing to a 1-2 defeat. Wilson continues to trouble opponent defences which is some good news for FPL players, especially against a beleaguered Southampton defence.

There’s wreckage all around Ralph. The man hasn’t won a game since going down on his knees at Anfield. His injury list and suspended list are ever growing, their talisman is only slowly feeling his way back into the rigour of the Premier League, and to add to this malaise there is Mike Dean and VAR. While the VAR and Dean struck again, shipping in nine goals twice in two seasons is not justifiable. They will atleast be glad that they can welcome Bednarek back to the squad after his red card was reversed on appeal. And ofcourse, the Saints couldn’t have hoped for a better pick-me-up than a game against Newcastle.

Bawa’s Verdict: A draw between two injury ravaged teams.

Fulham vs West Ham

Fulham didn’t have enough to trouble Leicester. They seem to be worse with Mitrovic spearheading their attack. While doubts will always remain about their defence, the ease with which they concede chance after chance will add to Parker’s list of growing problems.

David Moyes couldn’t have asked for a better start from the on loan Lionel Jesse. A constant menace up front, Lingoo took his chances well and scored two goals on debut and as a neutral it was good to see him back on the field doing things that he is good at. The West Ham defence was solid throughout and did well against an offensive minded Villa.

Bawa’s Verdict: An easy West Ham win.

Man Utd vs Everton

Manchester United have scored 9 goals in a PL game only twice. The first time Ole came off the bench, and the second time he watched his wards unleash misery on the Saints. The questionable refereeing calls egged on United’s momentum, but their performance can’t be faulted. The Red Devils will look to continue to apply the pressure on their noisy neighbours.

Everton were lucky to slip away with the 3 points from Elland Road. The freshly laid pitch didn’t do the players any favours and Everton took full advantage to beat an ever willing Leeds defence. While DCL scored one, he had a few other opportunities that a top class striker should take.

Bawa’s Verdict: Well played blue but Red is the winner.

Spurs vs West Brom

Spurs without Kane look like relegation fodder. While they weren’t battered by Chelsea, they definitely were under the pump throughout the game. If Mou Mama is to be believed Kane is not far away and considering their results he might have to be rushed into playing even if it is for a few minutes off the bench this weekend.

It was the one game that West Brom could have gone into with confidence. But the return of Fleck seemed enough to inspire the Blades to a result. The Baggies’ attackers need to pull up their socks, especially if they are to have any hope against a well drilled Mou defence.

Bawa’s Verdict: Mou Mama might not be crying at the end of this game.

Wolves vs Leicester

Wolves were lucky to get three points against the Gunners. They’d possibly need more than luck against the Foxes though. Willian Jose has looked sharp, and could possibly be the solution that the Wolves’ faithful have been longing for in the absence of Jimenez. He will have to start taking his chances to justify the tag though.

Maddison’s resurgence just as Vardy got injured has worked well for the Foxes. The return of Ricardo means they now have two solid fullbacks and should assuage some of Brodgers worry in attack and defence. With Vardy all set to return, Brendan would also be hoping that he can get Barnes and Madders to put together productive performances at the same time, and it could be just what they need to put pressure on the Manchester clubs.

Bawa’s Verdict: Fearless Foxes for the win.

Liverpool vs Man City (Match of the Week)

Liverpool couldn’t have hoped to be in worse form when the Cityzens come visiting. They definitely wouldn’t have imagined hosting City after back to back defeats at Anfield! Injury to Mane, Salah running dry and Bobby doing Bobby things has left Klopp on the edge. He’d desperately be hoping that the sense of occasion drives his team to perform in a game that could possibly define the remainder of their season.

Pep’s machine is rolling, and seems to be getting meaner by the game. They picked up a regulation win against Burnley with Jesus netting for the second week in a row. The absence of Allison must be a major relief for City. They would be glad to take on Liverpool in the form that they are in currently, but will also know that they can’t take anything for granted.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to edge it.

Sheffield United vs Chelsea

The Blades seem to be back. They have won 2 out of their last 3 games, and very few would disagree that they deserved atleast a point against City. The return of Fleck from injury seems to have given their attack purpose. The Baldock-Bogle-Lundstram axis seems as threatening in attack, as in defence. Wilder would be a more relaxed man these days.

Chelsea under Tuchel have kept three clean sheets in a row, first time a manager has done so since “The Special One” himself. While Marcos Alonso, Hudson-Odoi and Jorginho have found a new lease of life under the German, he will be hoping that his fellow countryman, Timo Werner can find his shooting boots sooner rather than later. The shackles seem to have been lifted and this team definitely has the potential to go on a winning run as their squad depth is scary i.e. 9 full internationals on their bench.

Bawa’s Verdict: Three-point Tuchel.

Leeds United vs Crystal Palace

The freshly laid pitch at Elland Road was as problematic to the players as was their passing early on. Leeds always make a fight of it but like Bielsa’s beverage they can’t keep blowing hot and cold. Bawa doesn’t see where the consistency will come from but they definitely need to defend better.

Woy would have feared the worst going down a goal in the third minute against a resurgent Newcastle. Palace stuck to their guns and thanks to some woeful finishing from their opponents took away the crucial 3 points. Bawa really likes Eze and the exuberance and directness that he brings to this Palace team.

Bawa’s Verdict: An entertaining draw.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Mendy/Fabianski

Defenders: Dallas/Evans

Midfielders: Bruno/Grealish/Son/Maddison

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

From the Leagues of Yonder…

One can’t make this up…Poor Sebastien Haller has been left out of Ajax’s Europa League squad, not because he has forgotten where the goal is but due to a clerical/administrative mistake.

Another one who has been left extremely disappointed thanks to a club’s management is Andre Villas Boas who has resigned from his role at Marseille over them signing a player (Olivier Ntcham) that he didn’t want. Nice of him to leave the $$$ behind.

Moving to Spain, Granada and Barcelona played out a thriller with the La Liga giants prevailing 5-3 to go through to the Copa del Rey semi finals. Antoine Griezmann was instrumental with 2 goals and 2 assists for this comeback win.

Here we go!

Featured

It has been observed that the Premier League schedule team has decided to up the ante and keep up with the relentless pace of the game that we normally see on the pitch. Another week has passed us by with a full round of matches and here we are on a Monday dreaming of the midweek matches in store for us. This is shaping up to be a fantastic season for the neutral where its becoming almost impossible to predict the results but we intend to learn from our consistent failure and push ahead nonetheless.

On a separate note on the FPL front, Pep Roulette killed a million hopes with Cancelo, Sterling and Stones not even seeing a minute on the pitch. This misfortune was only followed by Mane’s and Saka’s injuries twisting and turning the knife left behind by Pep! While no one in their right minds can predict what Pep will do, Bawa will definitely not shy away from making his predictions :

Sheffield vs West Brom

Sheffield proved that their win against United was not a fluke. They definitely deserved a point against City. With Ramsdale putting in another assured performance – Wilder’s prayers would remain the same – that his side finds their scoring boots soon.

Big Sam’s horror show continues at the Hawthorns. Every game looks like it’s only a matter of time before the Baggies see a third manager this season. With not much improvement in the winter window as well, the Baggies’ faithful better get their alcohol stock sorted for the rest of the season.

Bawa’s Verdict: Blades for the win.

Wolves vs Arsenal

While new signing Willian Jose looked lively, Wolves have a lot to worry about. Their inability to get past a suspect Palace defence would be top of that list. Uncle Nuno can’t wait for his favourite RJ to be fit to play again.

The last time Arsenal played United, a dry spell that set AFTV on 🔥 followed. However, with some more clinical finishing from Lacazette, the scoreline could have been very different. Lego Hair must be hoping Bukayo Saka doesn’t go about bruising his hip before important games again!

Bawa’s Verdict: Up the Gunners!

Man United vs Southampton

Somebody forgot to tell United that they need to stay top till the end of the season to take the title. The tendency to play wide every time Bruno goes off boil continues to frustrate fans. The defence will need to be alert against the swift Saints though.

The Saints were done in by VAR. Both occasions involving Cash. The first one a questionable hand ball decision and the second one aided by probably not squatting enough at the gym:

Saints would be desperate to put an end to their bear run.

Bawa’s Verdict: United to keep the pressure on Citeh.

Newcastle v Palace

The Magpies turned up in style to delay any Everton resurgence by another game. And in typical Newcastle fashion, absolutely no one except Wilson saw it coming.

Woy of Selhurst admitted that his is a side that is going to pick up a win here and there while stuttering to safety. Eze seems to have emerged as a reliable Zaha alternative.

Bawa’s Verdict: Palace to take a point from Tyneside.

Burnley vs Man City

Pope made 7 saves as Tuchel picked up his first win as Chelsea boss. There is absolutely no reason for the situation to change this match. The Clarets defence is going to remain extremely busy.

City’s riches in defence seems to afford Fraudiola the room to indiscriminately rotate his backline. However, while they get the job done, the lack of fluency must worry Pep, especially in a fixture in which they traditionally score big.

Bawa’s Verdict: City to ease through.

Fulham vs Leicester

Fulham deserved to take all 3 points against West Brom. Infact Bawa believes that Parker’s choir boys are one of the most improved sides over the season – defensively atleast. With more hands chipping in to support Lookman, the Cottagers could give the Foxes a good fight.

Brodgers has confirmed that Vardy and Ndidi are going to miss their trip to Fulham. On the back of a drubbing at Bielsa’s hands, that’s definitely bad news. However, in Madders, Barnes and Tielemans – the Foxes attack still has the potential to unlock Fulham.

Bawa’s Verdict: Fulham to share the spoils.

Leeds vs Everton

Leeds finally justified all the xG, xGA and all other numbers that we don’t understand by destroying Leicester. It looks like all that was needed was for Bamford to pick himself in FPL even though he too didn’t trust himself with the captains armband :

Image Credits: Fantasy Premier League (Twitter)

Hameez. Check. Richarlison. Check. Digne. Check. DCL just had to turn up as Don Carlo chilled his champagne. Then, Newcastle happened to Everton. The Toffee midfield got bossed by Jonjo ‘Dr. Evil’ Shelvey & Co. They can surely do better.

Bawa’s Verdict: First goal scorer takes three points!

Aston Villa Vs West Ham

Dean Smith’s boys ground out a 1-0 with a lot of help from VAR. That Martinez is back in form after that small blip will soothe Villa nerves. They are still on course for a happy ending to the season!

The Chosen One got humbled at Anfield, but the Hammers will be looking forward to this fixture. The return of Antonio has definitely made them look more comfortable in attack, and the Martinez v Antonio battle could as well make the difference.

Bawa’s Verdict: Villa for the win.

Liverpool v Brighton

After 6 consecutive blanks in the PL, Salah turned up on the scoresheet with two brilliantly taken goals. Twice. With a slightly underwhelming attack on the pitch, Klopp’s punt could have gone wrong. However, their messiah turned up on time scoring 2 to ensure they remain in the top 4.

Brighton finally justified all the underlying stats and won against a twitchy Spurs. The biggest issue still is the lack of cutting edge upfront as they should’ve score at least 3 in this game. Potter has really set his team up well and will hope to cause an upset at Anfield.

Bawa’s Verdict: Liverpool’s game to lose.

Spurs Vs Chelsea (Match of the Week).

Spurs look bang average in the absence of MC Kane. Brighton played them off the park and Mou Mama will be hoping that their Welsh talisman shows the same level passion in his football that he shows on the golf course. Spurs’ might lose yet another derby to Chelsea but this time Mou Mama can just point at the 3 on Chelsea’s jersey than putting 3 fingers up.

Chelsea picked up their first win under the Tuchel era, and now the boyhood Spurs fan comes up against them for his first big game. While Tuchel tests his squad out, CHO impressed along with Azpi and Alonso. However, we will have to wait and see if the new manager in Blue continues with his experiments or will unleash the Blitzkrieg on Mou Mama!

Bawa’s Verdict: Chelsea to win this.

The FPL Corner:

Goalkeepers: Ederson/Martinez

Defenders: Stones/Cancelo

Midfielders: Salah/Bruno/James

Forwards: Ings/DCL/Antonio

From the Leagues of Yonder…

As the winter transfer window comes to a close, Bawa wanted to jog our memories with this Blast from the Past image before mentioning the major transfers in January 2021.

Premier League: Martin Odegaard (on loan, Arsenal), Morgan Sanson (Aston Villa), Amad Diallo (Man Utd), Jesse Lingard (on loan, West Ham), Willian Jose (Wolves)

Serie A: Mario Mandzukic (Milan)

Bundesliga: Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig), Demarai Gray (Bayer Leverkusen), Luka Jovic (on loan, Eintracht Frankfurt), Fosu Mensah (Bayer Leverkusen)

Others: Mesut Ozil (Fenerbahce), Sokratis (Olympiakos), Arkadiusz Milik (Marseille), Sebastien Haller (Ajax)

Apart from January window coming to a close, the biggest news in the papers across Europe is Lionel Messi’s contract and considering Barcelona’s current financial issues all Bawa can say is “you gotta be kidding me”

Football fans surely remember Chapecoense, the Brazilian team that lost all but three people in a plane crash in 2016. This past week they won the Serie B and Alan Ruschel, one of the survivors from the crash, captained them to this honour. Bawa isn’t crying, you are!

VAR Interrupted!

Featured

Hello everyone, Bawa hopes that you have been staying positive and testing negative 😉This season gets weirder week after week and it is the first time in Premier League history that every team in the competition has tasted defeat within their first six matches 😳

Bawa is really disappointed that VAR/controversial decisions are making the headlines instead of the players/football. VAR and its implementation in the PL has been so poor that we wonder if this were to happen in any other field of work, people would’ve lost their jobs. There are so many instances that we will cover the VAR f%#k ups of just this past week:

Maguire chokehold on Azpilicueta in the box that wasn’t penalised

Fabinho’s foul on McBurnie and a few other close calls in the penalty box

Digne’s red card for his tackle on Walker Peters (PL has reduced the sentence to a 1 match suspension after Don Carlo cried foul)

Lacazette’s disallowed goal as apparently Granit Xhaka was interfering with play and hindering Schmeichel’s vision

Despite all this nonsense, we keep going and dive right into this week’s predictions! Its been 10 years since we lost the most famous of all octopuses, “Paul the Octopus”, Bawa will pray to his departed soul and try to get more predictions right this week!

Wolves vs Crystal Palace

Raul Jimenez scored a worldie against the Magpies to give Wolves the lead but Nuno must be extremely unhappy with Patricio and his wall in the manner in which they defended Murphy’s free kick and dropped 2 precious away points.

Week on Week, Wilfried Zaha keeps turning up, allowing the eagles to soar. With 10 points out of maximum 18, Roy Hodgson and his Crystal Palace team have done really well so far. With a few minutes under his belt, Van Aanholt’s return to the wingback role should strengthen the left hand side offensively.

Bawa Verdict: Wolves to continue their momentum with a hard fought win over the Eagles.

Sheffield United vs Man City

After dropping points against the Hammers, Man City go into this fixture in 13th place (they do have a game in hand though). With Aguero now sidelined for up to a month, Pep will be hoping that some divine intervention (Jesus) can play some minutes if not the entire ninety.

Sheffield gave Liverpool a run for their money and should’ve come away with a point at least. Despite a much improved performance, this tough run of fixtures comes at the worst time for Wilder and his men.

Bawa Verdict: City to labour to a victory.

Burnley vs Chelsea

Burnley played really well against a strong Spurs side and were unlucky not to share the spoils. With important players returning from injuries, they look solid as ever. If they can get Wood and Barnes to click expect them to rough up a few defences starting with the men in blue.

Chelsea played well against a resurgent United side but didn’t look their threatening offensive self. Mendy between the sticks has looked solid and if Frank can find the right balance between Werner, Pulisic, Havertz, Ziyech and Abraham, then this Chelsea team can challenge for the title.

Bawa Verdict: In a game of attack vs. defence, Chelsea to triumph and take the win!

Liverpool vs West Ham

With Fabinho also reportedly out injured, Liverpool will do well to stop West Ham from scoring in this game. Jota scored Liverpool’s 10,000th goal in club history and is the in form man with Mane and Salah not too far behind.

Moyes has got his big man in midfield in Soucek and with Rice they look organised and break at speed on the counter. With unlikely results against Spurs, Leicester and City, West Ham are the in form team and could come away with something from this fixture.

Bawa Verdict: Liverpool to scrape to a victory.

Aston Villa vs Southampton (Match of the Week)

Despite their loss to Leeds, Villa played well in the first half and should have scored a couple of goals themselves wit Grealish’s effort being cleared off the line and his magnificent solo effort coming up short in the end. It will be interesting to see the response from Dean Smith’s men against a team that plays with a high back line.

Che Adams scoring and McCarthy keeping a clean sheet against the then league leaders was a result not many would have predicted. It seems main strikers this season want to focus on assisting rather than scoring themselves.

Bawa Verdict: A high scoring draw.

Newcastle vs Everton

Steve Bruce must be a happy man to take a point away against Wolves. Darlow has been an able deputy for Dubravka but will be a little disappointed that he let Jimenez’s volley get past him. Wilson again had a good game upfront but he will need support if Newcastle want to win the three points. It was also interesting to see Allan St. Maximin being pushed up front to support Wilson and it will be interesting to see if Bruce does the same vs Everton.

With their first loss of the season, Everton will want to return to winning ways but due to the suspensions to Richalison and Digne, they face a difficult ask. Everton’s left hand side has a huge void to fill and this is where Newcastle will look to hurt them.

Bawa Verdict: Despite Everton’s quality, Newcastle to pinch a point at home.

Man Utd vs Arsenal

While United have not won a PL game at Old Trafford in the last five games, they couldn’t have asked for a better opponent. By playing Fred and McTominay in middle of the park, the Red Devils look a more balanced side and with Rashford setting a new CL record by the scoring the fastest hat-trick (18 mins) by a substitute against Leipzig, the Reds come into this fixture with their tails up.

Fun Fact: Marcus Rashford is only the second United player to score a hat-trick as a substitute after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Arsenal dominated possession against Leicester but in areas that couldn’t hurt the Foxes. Some fans believe that Arteta wants to bore their opponents into submission and we all know that isn’t a great strategy. The team is in transition but with injuries in defence and Mike Dean refereeing it looks like Arsenal face a herculean task at Old Trafford.

Bawa Verdict: United to take their first 3 points at Old Trafford in the PL this season.

Spurs vs Brighton

Mou Mama and his Spurs team are making all the headlines with their fantastic performances in the PL. MC Kane and Son are in sublime form and the team is playing some really good football.

Fun Fact: Only Drogba and Lampard have combined for more goals than MC Kane & Son in PL history.

Spurs 1-0 loss to Antwerp in the Europa with a much changed squad comes as a shock and with all English teams winning in Europe this week, Mou Mama is definitely The Unhappy One.

Brighton are very pleasing on the eye but if they don’t learn from their mistakes and take their chances then they are going to lose a lot of points. Maupay and Trossard need to hit the woodwork less and start scoring more if they want to avoid another relegation battle.

Bawa Verdict: A Lily-white wash!

Fulham vs West Brom

Scott Parker’s days as Fulham manager must be numbered as their performances have been under whelming to say to least to earn them a solitary point in six attempts. RLC and Lookman have added guile and an attacking threat but if they can’t get Mitrovic involved and bothered then they will return to the Championship next season.

West Brom have looked more solid after adding the experience of Ivanovic but continue to struggle upfront. Bilic and his team will have to show a lot more ambition when they play their fellow relegation battlers and churn out results if they want to extend their stay in the league.

Bawa Verdict: With both teams in search of a win, expect Fulham to win this cagey affair!

Leeds vs Leicester

Bawa’s love for Bielsa is slowly getting out of hand. A clean sheet for Meslier and a hattrick for Bamford against an in-form Aston Villa is probably the most Bielsa would’ve hoped for.

Jamie ‘Chat Shit, Get Banged‘ Vardy punished Arsenal again to help the Foxes earn an unexpected win. While Wesley Fofana has settled well, with Castagne out and doubts about Evans, there are some major concerns about the Foxes defence coming into this one. Vardy should be fit to play the entire game and that would make this game an entertaining watch for the neutral.

Bawa Verdict: Expect Leeds to carry on where they left off vs Villa and secure 3 points.

The FPL Corner: Ones to watch

Goalkeeper: Martinez/Lloris

Defenders: Mustafi/Dias/Dier/Chilwell

Midfielders: Son/Salah/Zaha

Strikers: Ings/Kane

While Donny Van Beek warms the bench at Old Trafford, his previous club, Ajax put THIRTEEN goals past a hapless VVV Venlo and breaking their own record for the biggest win (12-1) in Eredivisie against Vitesse in 1972.

In some not so surprising news from Catalunya, club president, Josep Bartomeu and the club’s entire board resigned from their roles at the Nou Camp. Bartomeu also dropped a bombshell of an announcement regarding Barcelona’s participation in the proposed European Super League.

The week that was!

Featured

Credits: B/R Football (Instagram)

What an absolutely insane game week lads!, culminating with the madness of the Transfer Deadline day! Most clubs across Europe had a pretty hectic Monday as they tried to get some last moment deals and steals before the international transfer window shut at 11 pm. A bit more on this a little later as we rate the PL teams and their business in the extended summer window. FYI: PL clubs can still do business with EFL until October 16th.

More than the teams and players, Bawa welcomes this break! United’s humiliation at the hands of Mou Mama’s Spurs at Old Trafford and Woodward’s inability to find a quality central defender has led Bawa to take to take up Yoga coz let’s be honest if you are a United supporter, alcohol just doesn’t cut it anymore! In fact, these past few weeks of football have been so crazy that one of our contributors has taken off to the hills, a luxury, sadly, not afforded to most of us.

While Bawa completely fluffed his lines this week similar to Teemo Pukki but considering we’re still in 2020, even Nostradamus or Bejan Daruwalla would have had a tough time. So bhailog, kindly give Bawa a break!! (pun intended)

While it’s still early days, the fact that Everton and Aston Villa remain the only unbeaten teams, serve as a perfect advertisement for the Premier League and bear testimony to its unpredictable nature.

While the Hammers, Villa, and Spurs recorded smashing wins, Bawa sticks to his guns about Leeds vs. City being Match of the Week. Leeds seem more than comfortable in this division and gave City and Pep’s men a hard run for their money, so much so that Pep was forced to make two defensive substitutions at 1-1.

Noteworthy performances of the week:

Michael Antonio’s inspiring performance at King Power stadium where he single handedly bullied the entire Leicester defence.

Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins masterminding a famous victory by taking advantage of Liverpool’s defensive frailties.

Heung Min Son pulling the hamstrings and helping Spurs to a memorable victory at Old Trafford.

Transfer Window Report-card

Arsenal – 8/10

This will be a transfer window to savour for Arsenal fans as they seemed to have strengthened their spine well by getting Auba & Saka to sign new contracts and adding the likes of Gabriel, Willian to the Partey 😉 The fact that Atletico and Simeone were the last ones to know that Partey’s release clause was met is the kind of karmic justice that Bawa can fully get on board with! #NoThomasNoPartey

Aston Villa – 9/10

With the additions of Martinez, Cash, Watkins, Traore and the loan signing of Ross Barkley, Dean Smith seems to have addressed all the issues to avoid another relegation battle. As seen in their performance against Liverpool, this team has the ingredients to spring many a surprise this season.

Brighton – 6/10

Adding the experience of Lallana and Veltman to youth prospects like Tariq Lamptey, Potter has assembled a good squad but they needed to add more quality to challenge for a top half finish.

Burnley – 2/10

Sean Dyche and his Burnley side are going to struggle this season due to their inability to add quality to their ranks. They have only added the uninspiring Dale Stephens and Will Norris and will hope that the squad remains relatively healthy to avoid a relegation scrap.

Chelsea – 10/10

After their one season transfer ban, Chelsea returned to the market like the Kardashians, buying more expensive items despite having a closet full of unused designer wear. Werner, Havertz, Ziyech, Chilwell, Sarr, Mendy were bought for a total of $300M and should challenge on all fronts. If not, expect a change on the manager front.

Crystal Palace – 4/10

Despite an ageing and makeshift back line and an out of sorts striker in Benteke, Roy Hodgson surprisingly decided to invest in two youngsters, Eze and Ferguson. Keeping Zaha for the time being is the only positive for Palace fans but they might struggle as the season progresses.

Everton – 9/10

Don Carlo went ahead and bought himself a new midfield, comprising, James Rodriguez, Doucoure and Allan. He also addressed his other problem areas by adding Olsen and Godfrey to increase competition at the back. With no European participation, Everton look favourites to enter the top 6.

Fulham – 3/10

Tony Khan seemed to be more active on Twitter than actually trying to add the much needed quality for Fulham to remain in the PL. Only time will tell if the deadline day signing of Tosin Adarabioyo and Joachim Andersen can paper the cracks at the back. If they can keep Ruben Loftus-Cheek fit then they have a player capable of taking on defences and providing Mitrovic with some able support upfront.

Leeds United – 8/10

With the exception of Cuisance, Bielsa has signed players that will fit right into Leed’s style of play and challenge for a top 10 finish. Quality signings like Rodrigo, Koch, Llorente, Raphinha and Harrison will help Leeds build on their strong start.

Leicester City – 6/10

After losing out their spot in the top four due to poor form in Project restart, the Foxes have addressed a few problem areas by adding great quality in Castagne, Under and Fofana. Not replacing Chilwell with a natural left back might come to haunt them in the long run.

Liverpool – 9/10

The defending champions already possessed a fantastic squad but the astute acquisitions of Tsimikas, Thiago and Jota means that it will be difficult to displace them from their perch.

Manchester City – 6/10

Despite spending $163 million dollars in securing the services of Nathan Ake, Ferran Torres, Ruben Dias, City will not be happy as they were thwarted in their attempts to sign their primary target i.e. Koulibaly. City also look a little light upfront with the ageing Aguero and injury prone Jesus.

Manchester United – 4/10

A poor transfer window with Woodward dillydallying and not addressing problem positions. Apart from securing the services of Donny van de Beek early, United waited to sign a few talented youngsters, a left back in Alex Telles and a 33 year old Edison Cavani for free on Deadline day. A truly uninspiring window at best when they should have looked to closed the gap on Liverpool and City like Chelsea have.

Newcastle United – 8/10

Bournemouth’s Fraser-Wilson combo swapped the south shore for the Toon and might end up being the hero’s they need than the hero’s they were promised with the rumoured Saudi takeover. Jeff Hendrick on a free and Jamal Lewis are quality signings and should help propel Steve Bruce’s team into the top 10.

Sheffield United – 3/10

Chris Wilder has invested in youth and will be hoping Ramsdale , Ampadu (loan) and Brewster can repay his faith at both ends of the field. They lack a proper creative midfielder and a seasoned Premier League striker and might succumb to the second season syndrome.

Southampton – 6/10

Ralph Hasenhutl has quietly had a good transfer window by adding talented prospects like Salisu, Walker-Peters, Diallo and the experienced Theo Walcott (loan). Since Project Restart they have played some wonderful football and these additions should fit right into their fluid, attacking system.

Tottenham – 9/10

Mou Mama has gotten Daniel Levy to loosen his purse strings and add quality to his exciting Spurs squad. Reguilon, Vinicius, Doherty, Hojbjerg, and the return of Bale might be the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that help Spurs win a much awaited trophy. Maybe, just maybe, Mou Mama is “the happy one”.

West Brom – 2/10

After successful loan spells, Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira are the only noteworthy signings made by Bilic to add to a bang average squad. Adding the experience of Ivanovic won’t really help them grind out results in the PL.

West Ham – 4/10

While Coufal and Soucek are good additions, the Hammers did well in getting rid of high wage earners like Wilshere and Anderson who just weren’t producing enough on the pitch. They lose a rating point for selling a great young prospect in Diangana and strengthening a direct rival.

Wolves – 5/10

This was a weird window for Nuno as he lost the quality and PL experience of Doherty and Jota and replaced them with Nelson Semedo and Fabio Silva. Marcal and Hoever will strengthen their defence but won’t help them take the next step with their over reliance on goals from Raul Jimenez.
